Dearest Shari: WOW! For some reason I thought this webpage had gone down, but now it's reappearing! So much has happened since I last posted. Your mom passed away, & I was able to attend the gravesite service. And most recently, Greg French died as well...on the same date as you, July 6th! Give BOTH of them a hug for me. Miss ALL of you! Much love, ~Big "C"~

I've missed this page, and missed your smile, and I have thought of you every single day since that day. These days I have a new reason to remember you. Our daughter, Bailey Harlan, was born in July - your birth month. And she was named after you, my sweet sweet friend. Daily I wonder "What would Shari do?" and I find myself working to be a better mother and person because of you. Words can not describe my grief - grief can not describe my hurt. I miss you, but I know you are here. Life is good. Until we meet again, may he hold you in the palm of his hand....

Well, it has been almost three years since Shari left us, and I've been reading this guestbook regularly, so I figured it was about time that I posted something. I see lots of old friends from the Flora/Xenia, IL area here, and it is not surprising to see Shari being remembered so fondly. She was an extremely friendly and well-liked person. (As you all know.)

I probably first met Shari in junior high, she was a year behind me in school, but I didn't get to know her really well until high school. We had band practice together and we eventually became good friends. During my senior year Shari had art class in 6th period, and I had it in 7th period. I sat at the same desk that she did, and she used to leave notes in the desk for me to find, just silly stuff or goofy jokes. She always knew how to make me laugh. I remember how jealous I was when Shari got to go to a Van Halen concert (one of my favorite bands!) but I didn't get to go. She told me all about it the next school day. I recall that she was impressed with David Lee Roth's moves more than anything else.

Also when I was a senior and Shari was a junior, we were in our local Explorer post together. (Kind of like coed scouts for high school students.) I was elected president of the Explorer post and Shari was elected vice president, so we spent a lot of time together planning various events. On one of our Explorer excursions, we went to the Shawnee National Forest to do some rappelling. Shari was very adventurous and not afraid to try anything, however, her first trip over the cliff ended up being very memorable. She was doing fine going down the cliff until she got her head too close to the gear and the rope ended up pulling a good amount of her hair through the carabiner. So there she was, stuck about halfway down a 50 foot cliff, unable to go down any further without a good chunk of her scalp being ripped out. George Dickinson had to go down the cliff on a different rope beside her and cut her hair off with his pocket knife. Shari was then able to descend safely the rest of the way down, and boy was she happy when her feet were on the ground. (Although she was not entirely thrilled with her new hairdo.) In her usual way, she just laughed it off and joked about it.

After high school, Shari moved into a place on Clan Street in Flora that was just across the railroad tracks from where I lived with my parents at the time. I used to cross the tracks to visit Shari, and she would try to teach me to play the guitar after she had put Karissa to bed. (Karissa was only about a year old at the time. This was about 1983.) I have a distinct memory of Shari trying to teach me the intro to "Sweet Home Alabama" on the guitar. She was a very patient teacher, but I never could play it as well as she could.

In the fall of 1983 I enrolled at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, IL. Shari had classes for a brief time there too, but we never had any classes together. I remember one day Cindy Booth came there to visit Shari, and they both asked me to go to lunch with them. I must have been so flustered by two pretty girls asking me to lunch that I totally forgot that I had a major physics exam at 12:30. When we were about halfway from the campus to downtown Robinson I suddenly remember the exam. I had to apologize and ask Shari and Cindy to take me back to the school. I sure wish that I had said screw the physics exam because sadly that was the last time I saw Shari. We ended up in different parts of the country and lost contact.

Sorry to get so long-winded, but I had never shared these stories before, and I thought that someone might like to get a further glimpse into the life of the person we all knew and loved. We all hope to be fondly remembered after we leave this world, and Shari certainly seems to be doing quite well in that regard. (And rightfully so.)

To the family and friends of Shari,
I'm not sure what happens when life is taken from us but I'm truly sorry for your loss. I had lost her email and website and had not heard from Shari for sometime.......I came across an email she sent me with words of inspiration in a book I had read about hope and trust. I turned to this book recently and found it and immediately went to the website. As soon as I saw the flowers bordering her memorial, I started to cry.. time just stood still... I hope "we" can all learn a lesson in life and think of her often.. Shari gave me words of hope and strength when friends I thought were friends turned on me.. I lost alot quickly and with out control or understanding of what was happening,,, but not my life. She helped me to stay focused and not let others bring me down..I know I told you before and if you are with us in someway... "Thank you" for helping me through my difficult time. Your words of hope and your positive attitude are helping me with another close friend with breast cancer.... I'm so sorry that you were taken from us. You will be remembered...Mare

Shari,
I still visit this website from time to time to see your smiling face. It is amazing how often you will pop into my thoughts and make me think about life. There are so many roads and turns to take in lifes journey, it is nice to know that you are with me when I am making those decisions. We all know you are in a better place, but it is still hard to try and understand..............

Shari, I still can't believe you have left
us, as Kanda left us only 15 months prior.
I still ask myself "WHY" everyday as you and
Kanda had so much to live for and we, in the
family feel so cheated to have lost both of you.
Now, we have lost your dad also, right after Christmas.
Will we ever pick up the pieces to go with our lives?
I wonder sometimes. I see my Kanda everywhere I go and
everytime I shut my eyes, I also see your grin & hear
both your and Kanda's giggles. Oh, sometimes the pain
is almost too unbearable and the next day is somewhat
better. Guess that is the way it will always be. We
LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU, SHARI.

Dear Shari,
How I miss you! Yet you are with me... there is not a week that goes by that you do not pop in my head and warm my heart. The greatest lesson (there were many...but this one rates as the best) I learned from you was when you asked me if I had a personal relationship with God. The conversation that we had has stayed with me over the last 9 months...and I've drawn strength from your wisdom during my challenges and triumphs.I know in my heart your spirit lives on and you are an angel over me, and your family and friends. I appreciate you and realize how extremely important for us to appreciate each day, live for the moment and stop and smell the roses.Love, Marilyn

Dear Shari-
I was devasted to hear you had passed away, not even knowing you were sick. It just goes to show you should never lose touch with friends, family or anyone who has impacted your life. I think a cosmic message was trying to reach me this past July 4th, as I was thinking of you. I was remembering a past July 4th weekend we went camping on the river for Thunder on the Ohio and had such fun. I remember 3 of us being squeezed into the cab of a small truck singing "Some Kind of Wonderful" at the top of our lungs going down the road. I remember being at work in the lunchroom and being amazed that you could eat a whole plate of just raw tomatoes for your lunch. These are just a few snapshots of the memories in my life that you were a part of. But the less tangible memories, the ones where you evoked a feeling or simply left an impression on me must be mentioned as well. Like how you were so ambitious, always wanting to improve yourself or your situation and how this always seemed to rub off on the people around you. I would have to say you inspired people to do better, feel better, and be better. Your journal did not surprise me in this regard as I always knew you to be an inspiration to others. I wish I could have gotten this meesage to you before you passed. But I feel your presence and I know you know what I am thinking and I take comfort in that. Love-Beth

Oh Shari, our beautiful Shari, Karissa brought your
gorgeous grandson,Troy, to my work place and tears
filled my eyes as I know he will not remember how
very special his Grandma Shari was. When I look at
Aaron and Ashley, I cry because only Aaron will
remember Kanda as Ashley was only 3 years old when
we lost her. How we have made it through this last
year without our Kanda is only through the GRACE OF
GOD, but now our hearts are broken again. Your
last email was an inspiration to me and even though
I did not know it would be the last email I would
receive from you, I saved it and it will forever be
a part of what you left for me, telling me about your
friend from Evansville who had also lost a child and
about Kanda's place in Heaven with her sense of
humor, and now YOU ARE WITH KANDA IN HEAVEN.

It will forever be etched in my mind the afternoon you,
your mother, Anna Mae were all on your knees with me
in the Clay City Baptist Church after I had found
my Kanda drowned and you were all praying, holding me,
trying to support me in anyway you could. As I sit
in church now, I often go back to that particular day
when I did not think I could live without my daughter
and I can still see us kneeling at the alter as we
were that afternoon praying. Our family is again
crippled only now it is our loss of you, Shari, as
we only had 14 and 1/2 months since we lost Kanda
and now we have to give you to the Lord also. Your
parents are devastated as well Jack and I know and
other parents know whose children have preceded them
in death.

LIFE IS SUCH A MYSTERY! But those of us left have to
go on for the angels we love so dearly on this earth,
your GRANDSON AND NIECE, TROY AND KAYLEE, KAYLEE, WHO
LOOKS SO MUCH AS YOU DID AS A LITTLE GIRL, KANDA'S
NEPHEW AND NIECE, OUR GRANDCHILDREN, AARON & ASHLEY,
ASHLEY, REMINDING US SO MUCH OF KANDA WHEN SHE WAS
GROWING UP.

Let us not forget the rest of our family who will have
to live our lives without you. We have already grieved
for our KANDA and now still grieving her, our hearts
are again mourning and grieving for YOU, OUR BELOVED
SHARI MARGARET.

WE LOVE YOU SHARI MARGARET AND KANDA MICHELLE

Shari,
What can I say? I just love you girl! I have this happy picture of you at my desk along with the bike week pictures, and I look to your picture and think: "What would Shari Do?" With all the changes we are going through at work in missing you so much as our leader and mentor, I ask myself this question often. I thank you Shari for teaching me all that you did in the time we worked and played together. You have made such an impact on all those that knew you. Thank you again Shari for all that you have done for us! We love and miss you greatly!

Kari,
I still can't believe Shari is gone but, never from our memories. We will miss her beautiful smile & her laugh. It seems like just the other day we were in high school together. Then she became a mother playing with her baby Kar-bear. I remember when we moved to South Carolina, fun times. We stayed in touch even when we went bi coastal,ha. We had a blast when she & David came out to Califonia for the Mexiacn Mardi Gras, Fly & Ride. Of course, we always had a great time visiting on the holidays, back in Xenia. We had so many great times together that I will cherish in my memory forever. Shari was a wonderful friend, and we will miss her dearly. Kari, your Mom loved you very much & was very proud of you. Your Mom would want you to be strong, but don't forget you have alot of family & friends that love you very much, we are here for you. Bridget,Don & Sierra

Kari,
Shari and I went to school together at The University of Evansville. Many of my best times there were spent with your Mom. I will never forget her. I've spent the past few days thinking about Shari and the things she said over the last year or so. Your Mom loved you so much. You should find your Peace in knowing that when your Mom needed strength and support it was you who was there for her. I don't think you will ever know what that meant to her. She was so very proud of you. You grew up to be a caring and responsible woman. I just wanted to share with you what your Mom had shared with me.

Karissa, Lana, Jim, Jimmy, Trish and kids. I think about
you all the time as each day goes by since 7-6-05. It still
does not seem real to me since she and I had been emailing
daily up until our trip to Branson June 25th. I had one
last email from Shari dated 6-24 and that was the last one
which I have saved. She wrote about Kanda and as I read it
that morning, I thought I was going to break down. That was
on the 30th of June, my return from Branson. I had no idea
Shari had gotten so sick. I have been through a year and
2 and 1/2 months without my Kanda, my best friend and I
will give all I can give in helping you cope with your loss
as I know your hearts are broken as mine is. Shari's death
is another loss for me and has taken another part of my heart also. Afterall, I helped raise her until she was 3 years old. I pray your return home safely. Your family will
be here waiting for you with open arms. We all love you.

Karissa,
What an honor it must have been to have such a wonderful person be part or your life. I briefly worked with your Mom in Clearwater/St. Peterburg when it first opened during a very difficult time in my life. Your Mom was very understanding and supportive. I know it may not be easy right now but keep in the back of your mind, "If you look toward the sunshine you can't see the shadows." - Helen Keller. Your Mom would only want the best for you, she's still with you because thoughts never die and the best news is that now she has a front row seat and will be your very own personal cheerleader!"

Shari and I worked together at University of Phoenix. She was a fabulous friend and coworker, but when it hit the fan in my world the summer of 2002, she was my strongest supporter, cheerleader and friend! That summer I lost my Dad, my niece, my dog, my Mom, my gallbladder and all my "girl plumbing" from a hysterectomy. My life had become a country western song and she was behind me one hundred percent. So the bottom line is that she was an angel on earth and now she's flying around heaven on a Harley with fluffy white wings on her leather jacket. You go girl!

I’m a friend of Shari’s daughter Karissa. I never had the privilege of meeting Shari. But Matthew 7:17 tells us that “every good tree bringeth forth good fruit”. Karissa’s kind heart and sweet nature are evidence of the kind of woman that Shari was. A dear friend of mine (Brad Harris) let me know about your trials. I am a breast cancer survivor (will be 5 years in July) and formerly from Oblong, Illinois. Your journal is awesome and brought back some memories for me--both bitter and sweet. If I had any words of wisdom for you I'd be glad to share. Just remember to laugh often and loud. For me, laughter was truly the best medicine. I'm going to e-mail you something called "The Best Day". If you have time to read it please do. It's just a little inspiration for you. I don't really know you, but sure love your parents. I was just wondering if they made it ok? You really look great in your picture and seem to have a very positive outlook. I am pastor at Clay City Baptist Church, and want you to know you are welcome to call or e-mail anytime you need a listening ear. We were not made to fight these things alone, but we need the love, prayers, and support of friends and family. If it were not for friends praying for my family about 3 years ago, I am not sure what would have happened. God has surely touched and blessed us through praying friends. HI: You do not know me but I just left a support group with Dianna Jacobs. I clicked on to Kanda's sight and here I am. I just want to let you know that a lady here in Illinois will be praying for you that your treatments will work and that very soon you will be listed among the cancer survivors. I have many friends who have or are going thru treatments at this time and can see how difficult living with this disease can be. I know that not having it I can't say I know what its like but i know it has to be ever so difficult. God has a plan for us all we know not what it is but I truly pray you will allow him to walk beside you each and everyday. Without my faith in our Heavenly Father I truly do not know how I would make it thru this time as I just lost the love of my life very suddenly on Dec 21st. We had a wonderful fourty two years together and four great kids. I have so many wonderful memories. Shari.........Oh my gosh, I didn't know you had breast cancer. I emailed Connie yesterday about using her as a job reference and when she emailed back she told me along with giving me your website. I just finished reading your journal and I am amazed. It is absolutedly the most inspiring story I have ever read. And it's been happening to you since the last time we emailed. I thought of you a couple of days ago when I was adding a contact to my email and saw your name and thought I need to find out what's going on with Shari. You talked about moving to Orlando last time we talked. To find out that you have gone through this incredible journey just in a few short months.......unbelievable! I've been sitting here in South Carolina doing next to nothing for the last 9 months feeling sorry for myself because I have a few aches and pains and can't possibly get a job because of it. Well girl, you are my inspiration. I'm getting off my butt and getting back "out there".

I did have my mammogram in October and they did find something, so I had a biopsy right before Thanksgiving. It came out okay but I will have a recheck in 6 months. What an inspiration you are. You will be in my thoughts and prayers and how wonderful for you to have Karrisa and Troy (which I am assuming is your grandson) with you. My two grandsons have made a huge difference in my life. I just can't get enough of them.

I hope to talk to you soon! Deb McGinnis

Hi Shari: I am so glad your chemo is over. I can not even
imagine what you have been through. Just think, on to
radiation and you are done. Jan Bible mailed me many great
pictures of Kanda and other students who were in FHA. I
must email her and thank her. It was so very kind of her
to help add to our memories. I am sure we will use some
pictures on Kanda's web site. We would love to see you and
give you a big hug. We feel we did not give enough hugs to
our Kanda so we hug more now. I have now added some material to Kanda's Memorial Page if you would like to take

Happy New Year! I know you've got a tough 6 1/2 weeks ahead of you, but, I'm sure you're up to the challenge. You are a beautiful, intelligent woman and you are my best friend...I love you man! Taking time to cry is ok you know. No-one ever said you have to be perfect. You are doing AWESOME and you will only get better. Give yourself a break. I don't mean a vacation, I mean cut yourself some slack. It's all about the recovery this year!! You've never lost you...as a matter of fact, I'd say you found yourself in 2004 and now you can enjoy the confident, self-assured woman that is "Shari".

Hi Shari, You look great on that Harley! I pray for you every day. You are an inspiration to us all. I admire your courage and strength. You have had a rough year. I know you will be stronger than ever once the chemo is behind you. It was so hard to watch Joy go through this last year. She's back to "Joy" now. I'm so glad - it's amazing what a year can bring. I wanted to let you know that I had Kanda in all of my classes during my first year at F.H.S. She was a doll. I will send you some pictures that I found from class. She was a big help to me, I will never forget her. Take Care Shari and thank you for sharing with all of us. Love and Prayers, Jan Morris Bible

Hi Shari. You don't know me. My name is Nancy and I am Christopher Twars' cousin. (University of Phoenix) He gave me the website to see if it would help me. I am in the process of my hair falling out. I find this very hard. Today I had my 2nd chemo treatment-two more to go. I also believe in keeping a sense of humor and refuse to let the disease win. There are people in this world that bring out the true nature in us all. Their energy, honesty, love, and passion for life -- light within us a flame that reveals who we really are. Personally, having Shari in my life illuminates my soul and teaches me how to be the best person I can be. She is an inspiration outwardly for everyone. Inwardly, I can only imagine what she feels. But I know this; the Love of every one of us supports her during this ‘challenge’. I know it’s not easy for you Shari, but it is truly a gift to have you in our lives. OK… enough sappy stuff! But seriously... you take care and remember if there are days you can't be positive...rely on everyone who cares for you...it looks like you have plenty! This is a challenging time so let us help in anyway! Love ya!

Hi Shari,
Cecelia sent me this web page. I just wanted to tell you I will be thinking and praying for you. I went thro surgery and 6 months of chemo 20 years ago at age 45. Happy to say I am doing fine. You seem to have a very positive attitude which will help you thro this 100%. Also friends to keep in touch with is a blessing from God. They mean so much at a time like this. I wish you the best and will be keeping in touch with this page even tho I don't know you. And remember if you get a day that you are just to tired to do anything, kick your feet up and give a friend the vacumn and tell them to get busy! Have fun with the wigs!
