You are a true warrior and I am in that army fighting all the way. My beautiful daughter will be 35 soon and she fought and won against Acute Lymphocetic Leukemia at aged 19 without undergoing Chemo and radiation. My prayers go out for you and the millions of others fighting the big C. I come from a family of cancer survivors.

Hi Graydon,
You are one of the kids I keep up - a teenager who has survived ALL. My Ben has been off treatment for 5 months. He still feels the repercussions pretty strongly and is working hard to pull his life back together - a new one, really. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for you guys to have lived through so much at such a young age. Yet, you have lived through it. And we are so grateful.
Best wishes,

Hey Graydon,
I just came upon your article today in an old copy of Canadian Living Magazine while I was sitting in our local ER waiting to get some stitches. I am so happy that you have celebrated 6 years free of that dread disease. I really like your name...my cousin has a little boy name "Graydon" and I had never heard it before...I like it because it is so unique. I am so happy that you are a survivor...yeah!!! My niece wasn't quite so lucky...she earned her wings in August last year...her site is www.caringbridge.org/visit/emiliesmith if you'd like to check it out.
Anyways...take care...I will check in again some time.

What an awsome achievement to get through so much.

Hope you are enjoying all the SNOW! We had 37cm on Monday and broke out the snowshoes to get around the neighbourhood. Our little Jack Russel Terrier was less than impressed with the snow being over his head - I wish I had a video of him trying to run around the backyard. He looked like a bunny hopping in and out of the snow drifts. :)

Hi Graydon!
Congrats on #6! You've come a long way.
My granddaughter Elizabeth (6) was diagnosed 9/03 and relapsed last Thanksgiving. She is recovering from her bone marrow transplant and is anxiously waiting to get to actually go to her kindergarten. She loves dogs, cats, bunnies, and lambs, although we only have dogs now. 5 of them - 3 labs, a terrier, and the world's biggest full-blooded chihuahua!

Your school sounds really interesting - do you like it?

I love your idea of delivering presents on Christmas afternoon. Good for you.

Hugs & prayers

I just read your note in the ACOR list re: the blog and voted for you. I did read the article in Canadian Living - I live in Canada. I only wished I had such an article right after my daughter was diagnosed...she was diagnosed in April,2006 at age 14 months with early-B ALL - standard risk. So we are now almost through one year of treatment and while its been horrible - her little body has handled it fairly well in fact (touch wood). Of course I am so scared of a relapse - I mostly can't even think about it.
Congrats. to Graydon for being off treatment - although I understand there are the long term effects too. Anyway - just wanted to say hi from a fellow Canadian. My daughter's site is: www.caringbridge.org/vist/sophie1 and password = vancouver.
Bye for now, Connie & Sophie (now 2 years)

Hi Everyone, Just stopping in to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I loved reading the update tonight. Graydon you are such a special young man taking those gifts to the kids on Christmas. I know how much of an impact you have made in Chritopher's life I can only assume how much that is amplifed to those kids who were stuck in the hospital over the holidays. Christopher still has the Picture of Batman who drew for him on his wall. It's one of his most treasured items. When I ask him about it, he tells me that his friend gave it to him as a surprise because he was sick but now he's healthy. I can't thank you enough. I wish you all a healthy 2007 and all the best this year can offer!

Hi Graydon. This is England calling! I've just realised that you are the same age as my son Jack who was treated for ALL from 1999 to 2002. Canada is one of the places he wants to visit when he's older. He wants to travel to loads of countries in his own Winnebago (if that's how you spell it; we don't have them here). Do you like the idea of travelling to new places when you're older, too? Wouldn't it be weird if the two of you bumped into each other, in some way-off-the-beaten-track place and found yourself swapping stories about yukky steroids? Strange things do happen. I used to know two brothers. One summer, Eric went on holiday to France while Rodney headed for Italy. But both of them hated to stick to plans. So perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised when they returned together. It turned out that Rodney decided he preferred to visit Spain, got to a remote mountain village, felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to see Eric! Not sure what this proves - except that both the world and the future are packed with 'wow'. So, keep your eyes on the horizon. Who knows what wows await you.

Best wishes

Dear Graydon,
I just want you to know that the world needs more people like you to make it a better place; people who have faced fear and overcome challenges, and people who can feel compassion for the suffering in our world. If you can use your pain and your courage to help just one other person, then you will have made a success of your life. There are many of us who every day are clinging to our belief in the beauty of life to keep fighting for good. Graydon, I believe in you!

Graydon, I work for the Ministry of Community and Social Services in Owen Sound. I knew as soon as I read your story that it would help families who call our office for Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities. Your mom and I were finally able to have a phone chat, and I told her I would be mailing copies of your story to families with kids with cancer to help them get through the tough times. I know it will have a positive effect on their lives.

Hi Graydon
My name is Heather. My daughter has ALL, she is 7 yrs. old. Her name is Jaimey. She has an older sister, and a cute little brother too ! She will be done treatment in June. Treatment is no picnic, but we have so many nice docs and nurses that are so good to us. Jaimey especially hates it when her ANC is too low, and she has to miss out on fun kid stuff. We are lucky that Jaimey feels pretty good most of the time, so we are able to do lots of fun family stuff. I saw your article in the Canadian Living mag. I wanted you to know how inspirational you and your mom are. We got lots of great info and web sites that we will check out. Way to go with your fund raising !!! Jaimey was the Honoured Hero for the Light the Night walk in Victoria. My kids wore their heely shoes that lit up... they thought it was pretty cool at night.
So, thank you to you and your mom for giving me ( us ) hope and inspiration.
All the best, Heather & Jaimey

Graydon, just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you. I can't imagine how hard it's been for you. You hang in there. What a great job with LTN! I was too lost in my own little world this year to even get to our walk, but next year I'm thinking I'll take on another Team in Training event. (Guess this year I needed to take care of myself.) I hate this freakin' disease! My little guy is 9 mos. OT and just starting kindergarten. He's doing great, but doesn't really "get" what a big deal this crap is.

Just checking in to let you know that I am thinking of you. My daughter followed the same treatment as you although she is 8 years older than you. There's a lot to look forward to when you get to go to college like she is now. Do you know who Will Ferrell is? Hi Graydon,

Congratulations on your big fundraising success with Light the Night! That is quite an accomplishment. You are helping a lot of people. My son had leukemia when he was 8, and 11, and 13. He really hated all the treatment and going to the hospital. Sometimes he hated the doctors and nurses, and me, too, for making him go through treatment. He was there a lot for more than 6 years and none of it was fun. But he is having a good time now. He is 27 years old and has a fun job where he hikes and camps in the desert with teenagers. He's really strong and healthy now, and he really likes this job. So, he and I are saying hi to you and letting you know that we are praying for you, because we care how you are doing.

Hi Graydon, my name is Lori and my daughter had ALL too. Sounds like you had the same chemo, and fight as she did. She is now almost 9. We are from Louisiana and came by your site and decided to take some time and tell you HOW WONDERFUL it is that you are able to be here and raise money and awareness and help find a cure for the yuck that is leukemia. We did the Light the Night down here last weekend and we raised about the same as you did. So JUST between you and me, we raised over $1200!! That is just 2 little people here fighting the same battle and winning!Imagine if we could do that every year-it adds up young man!! It is a cool 71(well, that is cool for us!!) here and cloudy out. It must be cold where you live. You probably actually get a "white Christmas"every year up in Canada-we had ONE 2 years ago-it was SO cool!! It did not stick well nd was slushy, but since we NEVER get snow, it was a treat! It kept us home, but we eventually ventured out to our Christmas family get togethers! You probably think I am crazy for saying it's a treat huh??!! Well I hope you are doing well and I will keep you in my prayers for continued health!

Hey Graydon. Awesome job with the LTN!!! My son had ALL also, when he was 3, he is 9 now. And for some reason he gained a lot of weight fast when he ended treatment - so now the teasing at school has set in about his weight, and he's not as fast as the other kids, etc. Plus he is in special ed because he is like a year and a half behind everyone else. But slowly but surely we are trying to build his confidence.. he quit soccer and wrestling but stuck with the basketball at the parks and rec dept and this weekend is his last football game. I am lucky in that even though he is always the last runner done when they practice, the coaches are supportive and always tell him when he hits high school he's gonna be awesome in football. you guys go through so much, that it just kills me when the kids at school call him stupid or fat. He gets so down on himself, I was teasing him about a girl he likes (Kelly) and he was like "why would anyone like me, I am just a fatso.." and I felt sooo bad. I always try to tell him even though it seems like no one else here has gone through it (cancer), that there ARE a lot of other kids who have dealt with it and are still dealing with it. So kids like you who are healthy are an inspiration.

Hey Graydon,
Thinking of you and your family! It's a small world and we often forget that. You and your family have touched so many people around the world with your story. Given them hope and let them know that they aren't alone. I hope that some of that flows back to you, to remind you that you aren't alone-there are people all over that care about you.

I recently heard a story about a leukemia survivor that reminded me of this. Her name is Page. She was diagnosed in the 70's when hardly anyone survived leukemia. She had, like 10 years of treatment. When she was in 6th grade, there was a kid who stood up for her and helped her and became her friend. The kid moved away one summer and she never hears from him again. Skip forward 20 years, she is an adult now and sitting in an airport when she sees a guy who looks like her old friend. She doesn't want to go over and talk to him because she figures he won't know who she is and won't care even if he does. But her husband goes over and talks to the guy. Asks him his name. It's him! Then he asks if he recognizes the woman sitting over there. She, of course, wants to crawl under the seats or hide behind a pole. The guy says no, so the husband asks if he'd come over and meet her. And the guy is amazed by the fact that it's her. You see, back in the 70's, nobody was expected to survive leukemia, so he figured after he left town, that she'd died. He has to excuse himself for a few minutes because he's so blown away by seeing her. He comes back and tells Page that his brief friendship with her made such an impression on him that when he grew up, married and had a baby many years later, he told his wife that they had to name the baby girl, Page, after this amazing friend he had back in 6th grade. So, when he learned that she had survived and was standing right there in front of him, he could hardly believe it. The world is a small place and we each have an effect on so many other people that it's impossible to imagine how important each one of us is to the rest of us.

Be well, Graydon and God bless! There are an awful lot of us out here pulling for you!

Hi Graydon, that is so cool that you walked in Light the Night and helped raise money for the cause! My daughter A.J. was diagnosed with ALL a couple of years ago when she was 13 and will finish treatment in December (Yay!) so we thank you for your hard work raising money to help find better ways to cure this stupid disease. It is also a great thing to know of someone like you who has had ALL and kicked its (BLEEP). Way to go!

Do not think for a minute that it is lame for your own mother to write in your guestbook. I have been writing all night (or it feels that way at least) so I thought I would tie up my evening by putting some of your favourite images in here.

Graydon-I found your site recently and thought I'd say hi.

CONGRATS on the nice fundraising for LTN too. We had our walk in Sept here where I live. There were lots of balloons, but my favorites were the white ones.

AND how COOL that you have a feature article in Living magazine. Your mom must be one great lady to write something like that, huh?

My 3 yr old daughter has ALL and is starting Long Term Maintenance. She was dx in April.

Come over and visit us sometime, okay?

Cause we'll be back to see how you are often!

It was so nice to meet you and Luka and your mom at Light The Night. It was a great night with so many people. I wish we had more time to hang out. You did so well at the walk. I was so tired after that my leg hurt. I am so proud of you and your family for coming to Toronto and doing the walk. You may not realize it but you are very brave. I hope we see each other again soon. Say hi to your mom for me.\Ps Happy belated Thanksgiving

Hey Graydon,

You probably don't much care to hear from the "old lady" parents of other kids, but believe me, we all think we're kids and would be skateboarding ourselves if our legs wouldn't break when we tried. Frankly, my own life as a 13 year old kind of sucked because my parents didn't let me do things like skateboard. I liked sports, but at that time, there was only stuff for guys to do, not girls. But now I get to do it all (as long as I don't break a leg) and I bought a snowboard last year.

My daughter was in treatment for leukemia when she was 13. That was a really lousy time. Like you, she did Light the Night, but she really hated it. As you probably already know, there's little to like about treatment, and she hated everything, especially all of the cancer events. I think she would have felt better locked in the house for the whole 2+ years. But now she's 17 and today she had her 2 1/2 year off treatment check-up. She drove herself. In fact, she's had a car since June, and I never even see her any more. She barely remembers treatment, and her whole life (other than school) is hanging out with friends and doing fun stuff (without me).

So hang in there. Before you know it, you'll be in the same situation, and don't be surprised if you come home some day and find your mom skateboarding. Just make sure you drive her to the hospital when she falls off.

Hi Graydon,
I've met your mom on our support group site ALL-Kids. I'm so happy that you went on your Make A Wish trip. It sounds like you had a great time. How cool it must have been to swim with the dolphins!!
I hope your legs are feeling better too. Andra has a lot of problems with her legs from vincristine. We found out that one leg is shorter then the other because of her muscles being so tense. So she goes for physical therapy once a week to hopefully fix it quickly.
Tell mom that really is Andra on her home page in the fairy costume. It was her 6th birthday picture. Pretty neat, huh? I love fairies and she is my favorite one.
I hope you have a great holiday season. We actually have our first holiday party this weekend with the families from the hospital. I hope Santa is good to you. We'll be keeping in touch.

Hi there Graydon and the rest of the family,
Jacquelyn, dropping a CV at MAW sounds like a great plan. It's funny how this whole cancer situation makes for interesting diversions in one's career. I was on leave from teaching when Lucas was diagnosed and I haven't gone back...yet. I'm not sure if that's where I'll end up...I'd love to work for the childhood cancer research foundation or some other cancer related agency and work hard to spread awareness.
Now here's the gif. I hope it works.

Hey Graydon,
Thanks for sending the cool police patch to Lucas. It arrived while he was in the hospital (he had a little unscheduled visit) so that made it extra special. We even hung the card and patch up in the room. Actually we used the stickers that your Mom and sister packed in the card to hang everything up. It was very sweet of you to think of Lucas!!!

P.s. Jacquelyn, I meant to email you but our computer died and I lost your email and well I forgot what you had asked so oops.......Could you resend it?

Happy Birthday, Dear Graydon, ten days late! Better late than never! I'm from the ped-onc list. My son, Kyle, is now 11 and had many nosebleeds. Guess where we went on his Make a Wish trip? Toronto! Kyle was a big wrestling fan at the time (2001) and we saw a Smackdown and met The Rock. He was awesome! We also saw a baseball game and went up in the tower, and went to the Science museum, which was really fun. We were very impressed with Toronto and the nice people from their MAW office that we met. We'd like to go back to Canada some day. Best wishes, Sue F. and Kyle

Dear Graydon,

You know how sometimes you get a birthday card in the mail a few days after your birthday? Well here is your belated email birthday greeting! I hope you had a wonderful time and a delicious dinner - shrimp is just the best isn't it? I hope that things continue to get better each and every day. Happy 12th birthday Graydon! Sorry I didn't get a chance to send my Happy Birthday post sooner...so Happy 12th Birthday Graydon! My son Evan (he's the same age as you -- just a couple of months younger) and I had a chance to visit your city to see Mamma Mia the day after your birthday. It was awesome. Have you ever seen it? I know when I lived in TO, we NEVER went to shows. Since it was a Mom spoils Evan day, he begged to get a rickshaw ride to Union Station. All I can say is, better keep your eyes off the rickshaw drivers, hold your wallet tight and walk real fast through the throngs of people streaming from the theatre. LOL. Expensive, fun and certainly a once in a lifetime thing to do...just don't take one to school LOL.
You must have been excited to be filmed for the MAW promo. That would be up Evan's alley too!!! We're going to be profiled with the Children's Health Foundation's annual radio-athon at the end of the month. That will be exciting!! We haven't got all the details yet.
Anyhoo, it's really early and I need to go back to bed . thank your Mom for the email, I will respond but it may take a few days.

Hey Graydon, you have a cool website. I have a 12 year old son. He was dx with leukemia in 1996 and finished treatment in 1998. He is in sixth grade and his first year of middle school. I will show him your web site. I know he will think swimming with the dolphins would be majorly cool! I do too! Take care and enjoy your web site. Lisa

Hi Graydon! Great site! My son had ALL and was also a guest at Sick Kids Hospital way back in Sept. of 1999 when he received a bone marrow transplant. He's 16 now and doing great! I love your pics, especially the dolphins...WOW! You've got a good bunch there at Sick Kids to look after you! All the best Graydon!

Hi Graydon! That's cool that your mom put this site together for you! My daughter Melanie was treated for ALL too, and has been OT for almost 6 months now. I told her about your trip to Atlantis and she thought it sounded AWESOME! I hope you keep feeling good and are having a great year at school!

Take care,

Hi Graydon,

So what do you think? Bravo to Mom for getting the site together!
Your trip to Atlantis sounds so awesome!! My 5 year old, Lucas thought it sounded terrific. He's hoping he can meet some dolphins at Disney (because that's where he wants to go on his wish trip).
