Fresca, our Greater Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, is our spokesbird this week for the Haldago Bay Flock. (If you click on the picture, you can see more of them, but I will be updating the site next week.)
We just wanted to send some "bird smiles" in your guestbook. Please know you are in our thoughts and the FIDS (feathered kids) all send FLAPS and BEAKS (translation, HUGS and KISSES) to your family. :)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you so much for the update, it means so much to hear that the boys are doing so well, and also that you are ok too. That is just fantastic news about Colton, I am so glad he will get the support he needs. I never realized before, that our boys were so similar in age/school...Quinn is in Grade four and Cal is in kindergarten like Bryce:) I am sure Ayden will thrive in jr kindergarten next fall, and it's wonderful to hear how well he is! The pottie training will all come in good time, I didn't even start my boys till three, nor did any of my friends, we're pretty relaxed about that in Calgary...figure it'll get done faster by leaving it till later! I hope you are enjoying being back at work and finding it fulfilling. Have lots of fun in the snow! We're thinking of you all,

Here's the latest from the Haldago Bay flock (8 birds.)
Tripoli and Pompeii had quite the conversation last night. Reminder: Tripoli is my two year old Yellow Nape Amazon and Pompeii is the two year old Severe Macaw. And TRUST ME, Tripoli and Pompeii know what they're saying.
TRIPOLI: (Singing) "Winnie the pooh, tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff.....(talking) OHHHHHHHHHH, baby, I'm SOOOOOOOOO good.I sing good. Yes, I'm GOOD."
POMPEII: (Leaning toward Tripoli's cage) "BAD."
TRIPOLI: "OH! (INSULTED TONE. She moves over directly next to Pompeii's cage, ruffled up.) "Well then, now I sing Hello Dolly!"
(She increases the volume, getting super loud to annoy Pompeii, and deliberately draws out every note!) HELLLLLLLO, DOLLY, WELL HELLLLLLLLO Dolly..."
And proceeds to sing the ENTIRE first verse and chorus to a very annoyed macaw!
And the best part?
When Tripoli got done, she straightened up and GIGGLED.
Have a good week! :) (Tripoli is in there talking away, right now. She just said "Ahoy, matey! Shiver me timbers, ha ha ha!"

Glad to hear the school finally did the evaluation for you. I know you must be relieved :) to get the services they provide. Wish it had been less stressful for you to get it, though. Your kids sound like they are at the fun ages to learn different things. Mine are fifth and seventh grade, and we like studying animals, volcanoes, and environmental stuff. Young kids sure are curious, arent they?!

It was really wonderful to see in your update how well Ayden is doing and how far he has come. The cough is a concern, I sometimes cannot believe how long they will wait to give a child an appt., it's ridiculous, they should see him TODAY...or make that yesterday! Just one of the problems with our health care these days I guess, but I shouldn't gripe, as we really have it great compared with the rest of the world. I hope they can soon dx what might be causing him to not be gaining the weight, perhaps a special diet will help. We will be keeping him and your whole family in our prayers, for things to even out for you all. I am so sorry to hear that you have been battling a serious depression, you have been through soooo much in the last few years, and absolutely none of it has been easy. I hope this break for yourself will help you to sort some things out, and with the doctors help, get you feeling so much better. Sending you big hugs, not as good as the real thing but when the boys get home, you can get so many real ones!

Well, it is rain, rain and more rain here in Calgary....and expected to be the same all weekend...this seems to be par for the course every May long weekend....someone doesn't want us to go camping! LOL Hope you're weather is better. Are you boys cheering for the Flames? I sure hope so! We are pretty excited that our guys are in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and being the only Canadian team, well, those guys get to have the whole country cheering for them, pretty cool!

Great news about the surgery Ayden! I know from a couple kids I know that have had the tubes that you'll start noticing a difference in the way you hear and the way you speak pretty quick! Hope you had a great week off school, and I'm very glad to read you are spending lots of time with your dad! ( And since I think I've forgotten to say it, thanks to your dad for serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, and making the whole county proud. We Canadians don't say that enough). What great news Mommy had to write in your journal...I couldn't be happier that you are seeing the bright light at the end of the tunnel, and hope you will soon burst forth into the sunshine:) Ayden, look at how cute you are with those big, HUGE brown eyes!! Wow! And I love the photo of all three of you, with your Santa hats on, so adorable! That is wonderful news that the doctor removed all that junk from your ears, you will be chattering Mommy and Daddy's ear off in no time! Quinn goes to 8 speech therapy sessions a year, for his slight lisp and there is much work that you guys can be doing yourselves at home that will make a HUGE difference to your success...why not just try sitting and looking at books or flash cards, and start making sounds, like Mommy does first? Keep practicing, I know you can do it:)) Watch how Mommy's lips and tongue move with the sounds and words, it can be fun and you can make up games too! Awesome that Daddy was home early everyday for spring break...did you guys have wrestle mania in the livingroom? That's what we sometimes have around here, pretty funny! Just so thrilled to hear all your good news! Keep smiling!

Colton, I am so proud of you buddy, you keep working hard on that Grade three and see what you can do! Quinn is in Grade three too, and it's sure not easy, but if you focus, and put your heart into it, I really think you can do it Colton...we're behind you!
So happy to hear Bryce is enjoying jr. kindergarten...it is LOTS of fun! Cal also enjoys his school, I guess his preschool would be the same as Jr. Kindergarten, as they will both go on to kindergarten next year:) To the 'big boy' school, how exciting!

Josie, frankly, you have so much on your plate, I think you are doing a fantastic job holding it all together. Women are strong, as are you. I know you hurt, it is so understandable, and I hope each day will bring just that little bit more joy and healing to your life. We are all behind you, and rooting for you too!

Josie - you write about not knowing if your grief is normal. I read somewhere on a CB sight a poem that said in part "whatever you are feeling right now is normal. It may not be the way you felt five minutes ago, or how you will feel five minutes from now, but it is normal." I've never been a big believer in grief only supposed to last so long, and so on. You WILL come out the other side, you may be battered and bruised, but you will come through. Don't compare yourself to how you think other people think you should be feeling, or how you should be acting. Do what you need to do for you, and know there are lots of people who keep you close in their thoughts.

What you are feeling is perfectly normal, I know my friend who recently had a miscarriage was bombarded by all the ads and whatnot on tv with babies in them, and being around pregnant friends or new moms was something she avoided as much as possible - it was just too great a reminder of her loss...

How are you boys doing these days? No more escapes from home I hope!! LOL How do you like me juggling clown? It's pretty fun trying to juggle, oranges work well, I am pretty pathetic at it but it's fun to try...if I concentrate really hard, I can usually get three going...like everything, it takes practice, practice, practice:) We are having a nice mild day, but overcast...however, the ice is starting to melt, so that is super! Now we just need a big old dump of 'packing snow' so we can get out there and build an igloo, the boys have been very patient!! Hope you are having lots of fun where you live. The birds were a-squawking and just bugging me in general to send this greeting for the New Year. New Years Eve they will be safely tucked in their cages, with a loud air purifier running so they don't hear all the fireworks in our neigbhorhood. We are a "stay at home" family on New Years, because so many of our neighbors put on spectacular fireworks displays. But that doesn't help with the birds, that's for sure! So, as we roll in this new year, we are going to be thinking about you, our long distance friend, and oh, yes, the dogs and cats just reminded me they want to be included in our wish, too. So, here goes. Happy New Year from: (there'll be a quiz on this later, ha ha ha!)
Sport the collie, Murphy the Shih-Tzu, Esmerelda the Maine Coon cat, Lex the black cat, O'Malley the grey and white cat, Charlotte the himalayan, Tripoli the Yellow Nape Amazon, Pompeii the Severe Macaw, Dasani the Blue-headed Pionus, Mokuba the Jenday, and Mirage the Congo African Grey...(all 11) and Sam the 6th grader, Ben the 4th grader, Cathie and Mike. Whew. By the time you get through all these, it will be 2005!

Sam and Ben are certainly creative, aren't they?! They were clowning around and with a simple hat, paper towels for a beard, and lots of pillows...emphasize LOTS....they came up with these costumes that they wanted to share with you. I don't know, I think Ben (on the right) looks more like a very well fed Sumo wrestler!
It was fun to see them waddling around, and FORGET trying to sit down...they plopped right off the chairs. (That is, the chairs they managed to even make contact with. With so much stuffing, they couldn't see where they were aiming and usually ended up on the floor. They didn't feel a thing with so much padding, though!) They eventually gave up, so the costumes weren't on very long, needless to say. Thank goodness, I was worried about my pillows' stuffing!

It's okay not to have the "Chrismas Spirit;" you have plenty of reasons NOT to--the death of an infant, a son who's been through two years of treatment and a husband who's overseas.
It's very difficult to find joy in the middle of grief but I pray that in the next few weeks you will be "surprised by joy," even when there's no obvious reason for it. Joy and peace, after all, are the real spirit of Christmas--may they fill your heart when you least expect it!

A belated but sincere HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!!! I hope you had the most special day, and continue to be feeling fine and well, sweetie!!
I was away since the 14th, I had to go to England to say goodbye to my Nana before she took her wings to Heaven...she was 90 and had a wonderful life, so we were very sad for ourselves as we will miss her, but so excited for her reuniting with Grandad!!
We were also devastated to learn of the passing of sweet Austin, he was such a special and fiesty boy. It is comforting to know that he is now healed completely, with no pain and only joy and fun as he romps about Heaven...I'm sure the day cannot come soon enough for his family to be reunited with him, but God has other plans for them, so they will need to carry on for a bit longer.
We would love to hear more about how you and Ayden are doing these days Josie, and remember, if you would like us to include Ayden in our 'happy mail', all you have to do is email me at the address below:)

I thought Ayden might enjoy the colorful pictures. Our flock certainly is getting interesting. We got Dasani, the Blue Headed Pionus just a few weeks ago, and now we've added our fifth (and final) member. I felt bad for Dasani, because he is smaller than our amazon, macaw, and Congo African Grey....so we got him a pal! Meet Mokuba, aka "Moki." (Mokuba is Kaiba's younger brother on YuGiOh) Moki has such a brilliant yellow! He is a Jenday and absolutely adores Dasani. He has pretty blue and purple tail feathers, too. They wanted you to know they're thinking about you!
We are also very, very sorry to hear about your loss. It's certainly undestandable to grieve for your child, I don't think you owe anyone an explanation about that! She was, and still is, always be, a part of you. Wish we were there to give you a hug.

Josie,
Early in our marriage, I had a miscarriage. I can so relate to what you said that even though you never had a chance to "meet" that baby you lost or had a chance to get to know her, she will always be your daughter, always be a part of your heart.
To have your husband gone during that must have been so incredibly difficult for you; I know it's also hard to have to keep getting up and going to work and caring for Ayden when your heart just wants to retreat from it all for a while and grieve. You are stronger than you think, but don't be afraid, whenever possible, to let that grief come.

I am so, so sorry for the loss of your precious and beautiful daughter....the name you picked with Sue's help is absolutely gorgeous and very fitting. I am so sorry that you do not have your husband here to comfort you through this loss, and I am sure he needs to be with you also. While I have not suffered the loss of a child, I do have an inkling to your pain. I helped my friend Shawna get through the pain (it's never really gone) of losing her sweet baby girl 8 hours after birth, her name is Kaitlynn Randa Pitman and we speak of her often:) After her death, her mommy and daddy and little sister McKayla went through very difficult times for a few years, but things are now looking up....and there is a new baby girl, Jayden, she is just a month old and she is beautiful too. I am sure her sister is smiling down on her from Heaven and her parents are finding Heaven here on earth with their new daughter:) McKayla is proving what we already knew, that she would be the most wonderful big sis in the world:) Josie, I will keep you in my prayers as you go through this awful time, there will never really be getting over the loss of your daughter..when she went to be with God, she also took along her future with you, and that is something you will always mourn. I am glad you were able to hold her and that her father will attend her memorial. We will pray for the pain to lessen with time. This little cutie just dazzled me when I visited the bird nursery..so we've added a FIFTH bird to our flock! I couldn't believe the sizzling blue coming through..and he's only TWO MONTHS old! He's a boy (they did a DNA blood test) and he wobbled onto my finger and said, "Dah bop?" My heart went "pit pat" and the rest is history. I was lucky, because these guys aren't that common. This breeder has only had one other one...five years ago!
We are known for our unusual and original bird names. Well, this little guy is a BLUE HEADED PIONUS. So, meet DASANI. You know, like the BLUE bottled water by Pepsi? And guess what his nickname is? SONIC, (derived from the "sani") another BLUE item, ie, the Sega blue mascot? (think video games) How perfect!
Dasani will have a hot blue/purple head, it's awesome! But what you'd love the most is their smell. They have a fruity smell! Dasani smells like a cherry-orange mix! Well, we just wanted to share our baby news with you. Dasani will be in the nursery for another month or so. Bye for now, more bird pics coming soon.

I'm so relieved to hear the great news. You've been on mind these last few weeks. Today is Ryan's 3rd birthday, and so far he is doing very well. Last year on his birthday, he was in the hospital receiving the last of his new treatments. It seems milestones like birthdays, and even dressing up for Halloween are much more appreciated. I know this may seem like I'm rushing things, but I can't wait for his 5th birthday, he will be 3 years post-treatment, and that's a biggy for neuroblastoma!! All the best to your family from ours!!

Hi Ayden! Instead of posting my birds' pictures, this time I thought we'd go wild. This is one of 300 pictures I took. Did you know Indochinese tigers LOVE to swim? They do. We watched these two for about an hour at the Houston Zoo. They have a huge area to lounge around in, and a wide "river" to swim in. The Houston Zoo is known for its natural habitats...some are so good, you can't see the animals. We never did spot the leopards (no pun intended.) which were hidden up in their rocky area.
Here's some fact about these tigers for you! They are found in mainly in Thailand, but also Cambodia, China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Jamaica, Virgin Islands (U.S.)
They like forest but also hills and mountainous areas. Their stripes are narrower than the Bengal tiger..but folks OFTEN get these guys mixed up! And guess how much they weigh when they are born? TWO ounces! The mom usually has 2-4 babies and by a year and a half old, they are skilled enough hunters to say, "See ya later!"

My yellow nape amazon, Tripoli, thought you'd like a picture of a bird in your guestbook. She is a show off! Did you know she she sings Yankee Doodle, Saints Come Marching In, and Old Mac Donald Had A Farm? She also says 150 different things, such as (wolf whistle) "Wow! You're a ten!" Other things are "You're my baby," and "I love you" and "Whatcha doing?" and "I want outside!" She also tells me, "I want food." She also does MY laugh then says, "You're funny!" The last time I corrected her singing, she told me, "There ya go!" like SHE was teaching ME!
We are working on "Uh oh. I taste like chicken." Aren't I mean? Hee hee hee. Total, I have four birds. Tripoli, Pompeii (a severe macaw) Callao (a Half Moon Conure) and Mirage (a Congo African grey) They keep me busy! We're all thinking about you. Good luck with getting the tests you want. (Maybe you're too nice...get INSISTENT! You have every right to demand the best tests! Go, girl!)

Hey Ayden, how are you doing? I hope you all are growing stronger every day and enjoying your summer!!! Did I ever tell you we found some bunnies in our backyard recently. Actually, our dog did - the kids were in the pool and she was barking like crazy under the pool deck. Finally when we checked there was a bunny nest with a baby bunny in it. Then after more looking through it we found 2 more. So since I have 3 kids and there was 3 bunnies, they each named one. We left lettuce and water and carrots out there but it was never touched so we dont think the mom came back. About 2 days later we took them in to feed them and we had them a week, feeding them kitten milk from a kitten bottle or dropper. They were SO cute! They called them Jean, Robin and Nibbles. My son Gooch called his Jean, named after Jean Smart in XMen. They opened their eyes while we had them and by the end of the week we had them they were running all over, more running than hopping. My husband was convinced they were going to grow up and bite our fingers off, so we turned them over to a Childrens Museum that is a wildlife rehab center near us. I hope they are being taken care of, if they werent already released. I know the kids loved them and they really were cute!! That was our thrill for the summer – hope you are enjoying yours!

To Josie: I feel a particular pang of pain for you becuase my parents lost my 2 year old sister to Neuroblastoma (in 1979)...I showed my mom this site and it was too much for her to see...but she is very eager to donate to the charity you have posted..it can do good!!
I also have a relative who had Neuroblastoma as a baby and, I dont know why, but she had quite a few problems with her hearing(like Ayden) until she was 8 r 9 years old, and then they cleared up...just like that...She is now an adorable 14 year old, great hearing,smart, healthy as can be and....CANCER FREE!! I Just know you will have the same for Ayden......Good luck.....your family is in my prayers

How in the world did you get all three children to take such a beautiful picture? By the time I get them all dressed the first one is playing with mud or something similiar or Rebecca refuses to smile. They kids are gorgeous nonetheless.
It's really unimaginable how the onc-docs often dismiss us as parents. It really is a widespread problem. I have friends across the United States going through the same thing. All we can do is be persistent and enjoy every minute we have with our children.
Neuroblastoma has taught me to cheerish every moment. That's not to say I am not still angry at the disease. I don't think I'll ever get over my anger with NB. Every time we look at our sons we see the battle wounds. It just seems so unfair.
We will be praying for Ayedan and a quick resolution.

Ayden is the sweetest little baby boy I have encountered since my own. I can not express enough how happy and thankful I am that he is doing well. Being around him and seeing his cute little smile and watching him grow has really touched my heart in a special way. He's a lucky little boy with a loving and caring family and so many people that care about him and that have prayed for him, and that has helped him to be the strong little guy that he is. Ayden, God bless you and your family.
