Alison,
You have been on my mind today and I am saying prayers that things are stable and going well. Hope you are all enjoying your summer. Every time I snuggle Isaac up in the beautiful quilt you made for him I think of you and I remind him that he has a special friend in Canada sending him love.

Sending our love back to you,

Thinking of you all today as I know today was to be the big day for Andrew's new wheels. Hope they arrived and that he is enjoying the new found freedom.
Praying that the results from your surgery, Alison, have come back and that things are looking good. Holding you all close in thoughts and prayers.
Blessings,

Greetings from a very sunny White Rock, and too much heat!! I know, I know, one shouldn't whine about the heat, but your Andrew and I share the same intolerance of this type of heat, so my heart is with him.

How exciting about the new wheels arriving so much sooner and thus giving Andrew (and the locals...lol) time to adjust before school starts. Oh what freedom for him too!

Delighted you are recovered from that surgery and hopefully the wisdom tooth extraction will not give you too much grief!

Please try and enjoy the rest of the summer. I shall send you a more personal e-mail later on in the week!

Much love to you all and tons of prayers and blessings.

Geraldine and those men in her life!

I'm sorry that I didn't check in sooner, but I'm hoping that your surgery went well! Glad to hear that you're getting a wonderful new nurse for Andrew as well.

Wishing all of you a relaxing, sunny summer...

Greetings Alison, Martin and les enfants!

My, those youngsters are growing so fast! Melissa kindly sent me her photo following her 'run'; she is going to be tall! Does she take after Martin's family?

So mon ami, I will pray for a successful result from your operation and speedy recovery.

God's blessings on you all, and with love,

Geraldine

Alison,
The montage of Andrew was beautiful!! Thank-you for sharing your family and the journey with me. (I would love to have the link to Melissa's) Andrew's smile is contagious and the fighting spirit within him is evident. What a blessing!!
Alison, although we have never met in person...I know there is a special connection between us. You are my sister in Christ and a special person and friend.
Much Love,

Hello Boettchers:

Loved the photo montage. Good job. I will pray the results of the bone scan are positive and even an answer to Andrew's back pains. Love,

Geraldine

Alison,
I am glad that the surgeon was able to repair things without having to go in to fix it but sorry to hear that the process of reconnecting caused more pain for Andrew. I understand the usual process of moving through the chains to get things done sometimes so having things expedited definitely was a blessing. Good news that the bone scan can be done so soon. I pray that if answers are to be found that they be revealed during this scan to help relieve Andrew's back pain.
Sounds like a wonderful approach to Andrew's way of learning. As much of a blessing as he is to your life, I know that you are a blessing to his!

Many thoughts and prayers,

Alison,

How do you do it? Although I've known in my heart that this disease is progressing and slowly taking Benji, it is has been so hard to have it confirmed. Shall we suggest a name for this crazy "non-familial" mutation. . .the Boettcher-Carroll Syndrome? I'll be in touch soon. . .Benji's geneticist knows a scientist that would like to explore the non-familial mutation. I think of you often! Penny

Hi Alison, I am finally signing your guestbook. I was so sorry to hear that Andrew is having more episodes. We are praying. Also for wisdom about the school situation. Those are hard decisions to make. I Know they are for us as well, and I'd be glad to email back and forth about the things that we've thought through for Connor if it would be helpful. I put Andrew on our prayer list on Connor's site. Hopefully that will have many more praying for him as well. Thinking of you and praying.

Alison,
Thank-you so much for keeping Isaac and our family in your thoughts and prayers during another difficult time. You are so right that even though you have a sick child in the hospital all the other issues at home don't just go away. Thank-you for keeping those concerns in your prayers too.
Those pictures of yours and Andrews eyes really do give us all a glimpse of how much instability you must deal with daily. I am offering up many prayers for continued strength and perseverance. I think you are incredible!!
God Bless You.

Once again, Alison, I am impressed how well informed you are and how you put it all together so one can read it in layman's terms.

I am praying especially for Melissa, and that she gets some insight how to manage these episodes during her 'growing' years.

Please God, once you have ALL the protection needed (LOL), that Andrew's chair arrives sooner than later so he has the summer to fully enjoy the freedom.

I pray your weekend is peaceful, and with lots of love,

Hello Allison, Martin and the kids,
I am here in Altona right now. Icame here last night and we are going back to Alice's place this evening. Her condition is not very good- she definitely has Alzhiemers and is constantly in pain from her back and side. The kids are meeting today to decide if she should go into a home. She herself agrees that she is ready foer it. I went to the service this morning with the Macloskies and enjoyed it. We are celebrating Bridget's 17th birthday today (May 22nd) with fallitas! The weather is windy and cold (7 degrees). Uncle Ed and Tante Ruth are still in Iowa so I haven't been to their place yet. They will be coming back on Thursday. Yesterday Erhart and Marja cooked us a meal of Finnish meatballs, veggies, sadad and potatoes. Marja's mom sent along some dessert from Thunder Bay. Blonie Poschwatta brought along a cheese torte. Macloskies joined us for dessert. We had a nice conversation and lots of laughs.
Bye for now,
Love Oma
PS Give a special hug to Andrew.

A Happy and Blessed Mother's Day to you Alison:

God is good indeed that you are able to greet and hug each and everyone of your children. Bless your heart for thinking especially, of those Moms whose children are not on this earth but waiting in Heaven for them.
Ah, I remember those days of pre-teens mingled with two teens. Now all of mine are no longer at home. Leo (our youngest) called me from Barcelona, Spain to wish me a special day's blessings, and Merak, called from Kelowna, and still waiting for the older one to wake up (youth !!), and call me.
I have Andrew in my prayers that all these bugs go away and that his skin heals soon.
I love your heart Alison, and blessed to call you a friend.
Much love always

Even as I type I have started prayers for Martin and will continue until, and after, the surgery. I pray that sufficient nursing staff are available to cover Andrew's needs, so you are free to attend to Martin's needs. I am so thrilled Andrew's ENT visit went so well, and that he was able to sleep through most of the IV treatment. May peace be with you all so you, Alison, can receive some quiet time for yourself. Sending you lots of love,

Hang in there, Alison.

We're convinced the technology division of the medical system has forgotten what the word service means, because we've heard and experienced similar stories, but none as slow as eight months.

By the way, thanks for the note about the length of our friendship. It was appreciated, as much as we have appreciated the relationship.

Isn't it outrageous that the scan has not been reported on yet, and someone's head needs to roll; yes I know, very un-Christian of me!! A repeat scan along with the old one from last August would tell you so much, especially with Andrew's increased pains. My love to each and everyone of you, Boettchers,

Once again, Alison, I praise the Lord for your gift of knowledge and ability to realise that temperatures and Andrew's colds do not go together! I am delighted that the chair was a success; why am I not surprised? I totally agree with you regarding snow in February; the funs gone by then. It's okay up to the New Year then my tolerance gets lower. I must admit I do keep a snow shovel and emergency warm clothes in the van until May!! Phew, Alison, I am exhausted just reading about the house project! Good luck with part two, the front of the home. I praise and thank the Lord for your wonderful eyes and the courage to check out these drug incompatabilities. It is amazing how the very answers are sometimes in front of us! The joy on Andrew's face in his pile of leaves is such a treasure to keep, and so uplifting to view. I have no doubt of the blessings you receive via Kody; God is so good, creating such creatures as Kody, and the gift of unconditional love. I pray that the meeting with the doctors goes as planned. I pray God continues to place a hedge of protection around you all, and that His will be done. All our love,

Wow what a week..... I hope the wheelchair helps Andrew. Congrats on your official adoption! I am sure your kids couldn't be any happier. I know that animals seem to light children's worlds some.

Have a good week this week and we will check back very soon!

Sending thoughts and prayers your ways. It sounds like things have definitely been busy within your home. I hope that the new wheelchair and seat bring relief from some of the back pain for Andrew and delight to him with more independence in the power chair.
I really like the new picture of Andrew in the leaf pile. Looks like he was having fun being buried within! Congrats on the newest member being official. He looks like a sweet addition!

Alison,

Congrats on the new addition to your family...Kody is VERY cute!!! We have a small dog in our home and at first I worried how it would affect Brody medically. She brings him and all of us so much joy that I couldn't imagine life without her. Thanks for keeping us updated on Andrew. I hope his back pain improves with the new wheelchairs.

Take care,

Hello everyone!
I am so glad Andrew recovered quickly with the antibiotics and that the Gabapentin worked too. I can hardly believe Melissa has had the Diabetes for two years! She is an incredible young lady and I hope the Asthma doesn't impede her sports activities too much. I am sure Aaron will LOVE the MONSTER Truck show too. Is Matthew well enough to go with him? Please tell Martin to get well soon and we are all praying for ALL of you. With love,

So good to get an update. Will be waiting to hear whether the dog works well - knowing how important that is to kids!!! Just thought I'd mention this - if it is any encouragement to Melissa - that my niece (the competitive swimmer) has exercise-induced asthma. She was originally started into swimming through my sister's contact with the Lung association - so it didn't stop her AT ALL - just needed to be managed with some puffers at times. Will pray for doctors' wisdom for Andrew and Melissa.

Please God, Alison, that your shopping is done on the first spree so you are not too exhausted from it, and therefore free to enjoy the rest of the run-up to this time. Greetings Alison, Martin et al:
I am so sorry our local hospital keeps letting you down. It's quite a trek to Langley when you are not feeling well. My prayers will be that Peace Arch start to carry the necessary medicines for you as these emegencies aren't going away too soon/much at the moment, and holistically it would pay them to keep supplies of sort. I will be sending Andrew his personal mail separately via your email. I was gld he got to experience the Pantomime, it should be a mandatory thing to do at least once in your life time (of every family). Stay blessed and know you are loved by the Scanlans.

I was just reading through your journal entries and come to the
"To you, my Sisters" writing. I loved it. Thank-you for sharing it. I had actually never read it before. I can relate with so much of what it said. It is a special sisterhood that we are in. Nothing that any of us would have signed up for probably but one that most of us have chosen to accept and see the blessings among the heartache.
Would you mind if I shared the writing on Isaac's website sometime?

Keeping Andrew and you all in my thoughts. Praying that the new medicine helps with the pain.

An idea to use the power of prayer. When you know the date, time and expected endurance of the proposed conference of doctors, you could advise all your Guestbook recipients. We could, then, all lift up Andrew, your family and the doctors simultaneously during the conference, in order to maximize our communication with God.

Dear Alison and Martin:
How exhausted you sound, and, clearly feel! I am so sorry you are struggling and can understand your frustration having to use your homecare for your own physical needs and not your Spiritual needs, though those needs are intertwined!
It's too bad that something like a temporary clostomy cannot relieve his gut linings so they can heal and build up resistance, but I know even that is not viable while he is so vulnerable. Poor Andrew. We are praying for Peace in your daily lives so you all get recovery time from the various 'upsets' in your days. Please remember we Scanlans love the Boettchers.

Oooo - a fan with a bucket of ice in front of it? Is that how it works? It sounds very promising - we'll have to try that at our house. But as of today, we're hopeful that this heat wave is starting to break a bit (fingers crossed, as I know this must be very hard for Andrew).

Hello Alison and Martin: What a dreadful time you have had!! Here was I moaning about the heat and there was poor Andrew struggling, and he has more reason than I to complain. I am really sorry he had to suffer so much. He is such a sweetheart too. I pray he recovers quickly enough to enjoy this Canada Day weekend and that this hot weather stays away long enough so he can learn to cope with these hot days. Enjoy your break from early morning starts; I remember those when Rigel John was into water-polo!! I have an empty nest now. RJ is starting his trek across Canada today, Merak is up in Salmon Arm at the bible camp for the summer, and Leo moved into his apartment in Montreal today, and Malcolm is in the Bahamas struggling with the lack of internet, cell phones etc and back to basic communications ie telephone cards and maybe get round to putting pen to paper!! Take care mes amies. God's blessings rain down on you all. Love,
Geraldine

I'm glad they found the right combination of meds to clear out those icky bugs and i hope they stay away for a long time. I hope Andrew was able to enjoy his time at school and that you were able to get a well deserved break too.

It is incredible how much Andrew and his big brother look alike!!! Keep us posted on the dysautonomia as what you learn may help us all. I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas...at home!!! Take care and enjoy this time together with family.

Well, mes amis(?sp):
I am really sorry to hear about the Vancomycin reacting like that on poor Andrew...as though he doesn't have enough to put up with! I do hear you though Alison about having a closer name to put on his diagnosis; it still doesn't take away from his suffering nor the stresses you have all gone through over the years. May your Christmas continue to be 'bug' free and may you continue to feel His presence. All our love, the Scanlans

Thank you so much for the password. I totally understand the need but think it's so sad that it's come to this for so many (you may have seen my rant)
The new peicture looks great, everyone looks so happy. Hope you get your results sooner rather than later. I know the wait can be unbearable. i really hope the cultures start coming back clear.

I came on over after e-mailing you while I had the chance. I will be praying for negative cultures as I know this is the last thing you need this close to Christmas. Andrew looks like he is doing well. The Christmas picture is great but you know Brody will miss the Wiggles picture!!! I would love to hear more about the dysautonomia testing at some point. Take care and have a Wonderful Christmas!!!

Hello Alison and Martin:
Great idea about the password. I am so glad that you have not received any distasteful 'entries'. I am really sorry to hear about the last culture. What a shame he is so allergic to Vancomycin; mind you if they have to then my heart goes out to Andrew as it is such a powerful antibiotic, and may knock him sideways. My prayers will be with you all as they always are. You are very loved by the Scanlans. I DO love the latest photograph of les enfants. Love, Geraldine

Stability is such a wonderful thing. Hope Andrew behaves and shows the Drs what he does at home when he gets to the hospital (we know how frustrating that can be). Hope the stay is a positive one.
Music is such a wondeful thing. Will has discovered singing lately, but we just get the last word or two of the sentance so it's pretty fun to listen too.
I'll have to get working on some freezer meals this week too but fortunately we'll have leftover turkey to keep my family going. Good Luck.

G'day!

I was checking out The Big Brave Banner site and saw your link and thought I'd stop in and say hi because living with no (adequate) diagnosis is something that I also struggle with... actually, it is more accurate in my case to say that I have many diagnoses, but they don't really explain everything!

Also, being an Aussie, I know all about the Wiggles - they can be lots of fun and I am glad that you enjoyed them!

I read all your journal entries - what an incredible roller-coaster your family is on. When my attendant gets here, I am going to light candles for you all and keep you in my heart/prayers. I look forward to your journal entries, and hope that life between now and then is calm and crisis -free!!

Hugs,

Hi Alison,

I got your message on Brody's carepage and came over to find out more about Andrew. It does sound like we have a lot in common. The picture with the Wiggles is great...Brody loves the Wiggles too. In fact right now he has to wear a "Murray" shirt everyday, drink from a "Murray" cup with a "Murray" straw, and eat with a you guessed it..."Murray" spoon. It sounds like Brody and Andrew are in competition on who can spend the most time at the hospital. I know that this is so hard and increasingly so when you have other children who also need thier Mom. I am glad that you sent me Andrew's site and I will try to check on him regularly in the future. I will be praying for Andrew and your entire family.

Sorry to hear about Andrew's medical complications lately. They sound very frustrating and tiring for everyone. Obviously, it's a different situation than ours, but Sam also had chronically low hemoglobin during his year of intense chemo. It definitely tends to make children tired and cranky - and he had several transfusions too. I wonder if all those IV meds might have affected Andrew's hemoglobin?

Hope Andrew's able to avoid a transfusion and that things start to improve on their own soon!

I am so sorry to hear all that has been going on. I hope Andrew is feeling much better soon. I'm glad you got out on your quilting adventure! I'm sure that was good for your soul & you defenitely needed some time out. Thanks for checking in on Emma. Your family is in our thoughts & prayers. Emma has started "dancing" and guess what? The Wiggles get her moving like nothing else!! So, still, everytime I find myself humming (usually at the grocery store, LOL!) "Fruit salad, yummy, yummy..." we think of Andrew. Take care.

Oh, my sweet little buddy. What a very high scary temp you had. I am sure all this stuff with your body is uncomfortable and scary. I love you tons my little friend. Spency says hello and sends his prayers and love, too.

I hope the antibiotic gets the infection under control very soon.

Hi Andrew,

My name is Eva. I was checking out The Big, Brave Banner site and saw your link and thought I'd stop in and say hello!
How cool is that, that you got to see and meet the Wiggles. My 3 year old grandson loves them. I turn them on the tv for my 4 month old granddaughter to watch! They are so much fun!!

I'm sorry that you've got a UTI. I hope the antibiotics work for you and I hope that your mommy gets to feeling better real soon!

We will be sure to include you in our thoughts and prayers!!

Love and hugs,

Hello to you all!! We have just (Malcolm , Merak and myself) returned from a whirlwind round the world to NZ, Australia-here I met my mother for the first time! And it was there in Sydney that I got to see the show of the Wiggles-Wow, no wonder Andrew loves them. Now I really understand his love of them. We continued to Singapore to wonder down memory line for Malcolm and myself then of to England and finally to Ireland to meet more of my new found family!!! I hope my joyous news lightens your smiles even though I know your hearts ache so much. We are sending tons of love to you all and hope Alison the antibiotics are beginning to work and that you have more energy, also that the those darned bugs LEAVE dear Andrew's body. May you all sense and know HIS loving arms are around you and that he reveals His plan in many ways to you so you can continue this journey in HIS love. We love you all so much. The Scanlans

Hi Alison,
You responded a while back to my query on the Hypotonia board looking for Moms in the Pacific Northwest. I am attempting to get some moms and kids together on June 10th somewhere close to children's hospital in Seattle. I would love to meet you guys, but at the same time I understand that it is a far drive and short notice. I am sorry to hear of Andrew's recent infection. I hope that he is doing better. Good luck with getting a grant for that van.

Alison,

Thanks for sharing. I LOVED the poem! Boy, doesn't it ever ring true. Actually, when I see a child having a tantrum, my first thought is "How developmentally appropriate!" I remember the first time Spencer had a tantrum was in the Doctors office. My Mom, the Doc, and I all celebrated that tantrum. I had several friends with NT kids tell me they thought it rather odd we would celebrate a tantrum.

I am visualizing a van with a chair life. Money flowing into your home. And Andrews immune system clearing his body of all icky things. Love you piles.

Allison - thanks for stopping by and signing my guestbook!! Does your son have PAF?? Have you ever heard of the Dysautonomia Youth Network of America, Inc. (DYNA)? I belong to this group - it's a support/awareness group for kids with various forms of Dysautonomia. Your son would probably qualify for the Postal Outreach Program and you would also be put in touch with other parents of kids with Dysautonomia. I'm not sure of your son's exact diagnosis, but it's worth looking into!!

Anyhow, I hope all is well with you and your family. I'll check back for updates!!

Dearest Alison and Martin and Les enfants! Actually young people....you are all growing into fine young adults. Was it that long ago that I held you soon after your birth? How time moves on and we prayfully hope that these times will now have more fun times. Blessings that the doctors were able to stem the bleeding and find the alternate way to deal with the acid. Poor Andrew's tummy!! Hopefully his haemaglobin will get higher as he retains more nourishment so giving him more energy. I pray your Christmas will be peaceful and blessed. We love you all very much. Geraldine and the men in her life!

Dear Alison and Martin:
It doesn't rain in your household, IT POURS!! We are truly sorry about the latest attack on Andrew's body. We understand that helpless feeling as you watch Andrew suffer, reluctantly take him to hospital, then be told nothing is infected when you can feel it in your very bones, having suffered such times too often in the past. We hold Andrew up in prayers and ask for relief and for wisdom from the doctors as they ponder his pain. We ask for more blessings of patience and inner peace as you end each day of frustration. Armfuls of hugs and love go out with this email too.

Dear Alison & family,

I have been introduced to your family through my Uncle Ross Hayhoe who I beleive works with your husbund at Focus on the Family. My wife and I have some understanding of what you are currently experiencing through your son's illness. Our son (Kyle) was admitted to Sick Kid's in Toronto with a serious heart condition (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)in Sept. of last year. His only chance of survival (medically speaking...we believe in miracles!) was a heart transplant. On Jan. 7 of this year our Lord and Saviour provided a new heart for Kyle. The operation was successful and we are now at home enjoying our "new" son. We have strugles with reflux, blood pressure, & weight gain but are very thankful for his steady recovery. My wife and I will pray that your family will have strength and courage each day that the Lord provides for you.
Love,

Dear Alison, Martin and les enfants!!
We appreciate your updates and can understand your concerns and at least you have a record of his heart and the antics it gets up to. We give thanks to the Lord for softening the hearts of MSP and paying for the important tests and we will continue for God's blessings and intervention as He sees fit. We pray that he showers you with comfort as you journey the path He has laid out for you. We know He is always with you. We can understand your reluctance to have Andrew admitted and that the urgency has died down. It is good to know about the reflux and aspiration..phew what a nightmare. Thank goodness it was 'caught'. A huge HUG is on it's way to you all with love from Geraldine and sons and of course Malcolm.

Alison, thank you for sharing your story- of faith, of love, and of hope. My sister was born with a congenital illness that was never quite diagnosed or treated. She lived her life being termed "terminally ill", and I know that the faith and love that surrounded her allowed her to life a full and wonderful life. There is more to this life than what the doctors find tangible. Keep loving and living and hoping. Your sweet son is a blessing and an inspiration to many. God bless you and yours.

Hi Alison,
I just wanted to tell you again how much I admire your strength and faith in God. Seeing you working and having fun at VBS last week was such an encouragement to me and I found myself thinking "here she is encouraging me, when in fact I ought be encouraging her!". You have such wonderful kids, Alison. I had the chance last week to get to know Aaron and Matthew a wee bit better and I have to say that Aaron made me smile many, many times and Matthew is a real gem. They're both such gentle souls, thoughtful and a real delight to be around. You and Martin are doing a fantastic job raising your young men; may God's blessings pour down on you! I'll be keeping you all in my prayers while you are away on your holiday; prayers for safety and fun, fun, fun! Love from, Wendy

Thankyou for being strong and fighting so hard for Andrew. God has blessed us with healing for our own son and I pray you continue to have faith and know there are many prayers surrrounding your family. You are a wonderful example and inspiration to me.

Hi Alison and company. Its good to hear you are safely at home again. You must be exhausted after the trip but it sounds like some good information has been gained, and maybe some new insight. Your stamina and strength are inspiring! The Lord bless you and keep you. Love from the Hartmanns.

Dear Alison, I just got hooked up to the internet on Monday and so I have only now been able to check out the website that I've been hearing so much about. What a great way to keep up to date with Andrew and all of you! I am overwhelmed at your strength in dealing with Andrew's illness and I hope you will feel renewed by our prayers and by the prayers of the rest of your family at PAF. Blessings to you all, with love,

Dear Alison, Andrew and Grandma. Andrew is a very fortunate guy to have a mom and grandma there 'at arms reach' with all this new stuff happening around him. I'm sure the rest of the family is closer than you think too. May God wrap his amazingly lovable arms around you, Andrew, Grandma and the rest of the family during this. Blessings.

Dear Alison and Martin:
I feel so blessed to know you as friends. Your journey has been long and hard and I know that with the Lord's gracious help you have survived. No-one really sees the internal hardships you suffer; I can only gauge them from my own experiences. However when it comes to your own child then the emotions are at their strongest and I admire you with your fortitude and will to go on. I am not so sure I could have been so strong. You are daily in our prayers. We love you, Geraldine and family.

Hi to all,
What a wonderful way to let us know how little Andrew is doing! John and I are going to Toronto on the 11th, but will have gone east by the time you arrive there. We are travelling to Nova Scotia for about 3 weeks. We will be back in Langley on the 6th of Oct. We may see you on Sunday, if not we will see you when we get back.
Be assured you are in our prayers.

Andrew,
You are one of the most courageous and loving people that I have met. To be called your mother is a priviledge and an honour. Your name means "Strong and courageous one", little did we know when we named you how true that would be.
Love Your Mommy
