I was just reading a book that had a quote in it:

This really made me think of Katelyn...........
Even though we cannot see her or touch her, we can feel her in our hearts everyday. The love we feel for that precious little angel is embedded in our hearts forever.

Hurray...I finally got my dial-up to work yesterday (as you know) so I'm finally connected to the outside world again! Thanks so much for your comforting words Deb...I thought of you all day yesterday and it was soothing to know that you and Brian can relate all too well. I also remember how bright and positive you were (and still are) throughout your trials and I'm thankful to have you two as our role models.
You're right...I am inundated (sp?)with all of this decision-making right now and I will try to step back, take a breath, and enjoy the day more. I did lie with Kirk yesterday for an hour and played a game- I'd eat his hand, he'd swat me in the face LOL.
I'm glad you updated about Brandon...I saw Muriel on Friday night but haven't talked to her since then. I did twist a few arms yesterday and was thrilled to learn that he'd been successfully extubated but was fairly tired of course. What a trooper! I'm keeping tabs though and will give you any news I have.
BTW, Brandon's MuchMusic episode was supposed to air last night but when they found out he'd had the transplant, they wanted to postpone it so they could follow through on that so I guess Mur will need to let us know the future date.
Aunt Marg...I'm glad you're recovering from your infection...and Deb, stay sitting down so we don't need to be worryin' about you stumbling and hurting you other ankle!LOL
I just found out that we can now use cell phones in the hospital so I'll call you later. My hospital line could be tied up due to the internet.
Love to everyone..especially Angel Katelyn who's keeping watch over all the little cherubs here at SickKids. I've been talking to many people down here who want me to send you best wishes!

Ok I am trying to update Brandon's webpage but of course I can't get past step #1.
Debbie kinda took a bit of a tumble tonight and is on her way to emergency....details to come...and she asked me to update.
Brandons lungs are o.k and there is no infections.
His kidneys are failing a bit but this is common from the medication he is taking.
Brandon is still peeing, I am not exactly sure what that means but I know it is a good sign.
Soon you will have a more professional update....please bear with me.

The Gap
The gap between those who have lost children and those who have not is profoundly difficult to bridge. No one, whose children are well and intact can be expected to understand what parents who have lost children have absorbed and what they bear. Our children come to us through every blade of grass, every crack in the sidewalk, every bowl of breakfast cereal. We seek contact with their atoms, their hairbrush, their toothbrush, their clothing. We reach for what was integrally woven into the fabric of our lives, now torn and shredded.
A black hole has been blown through our souls and, indeed, it often does not allow the light to escape. It is a difficult place. For us to enter there is to be cut deeply, and torn anew, each time we go there, by the jagged edges of our loss. Yet we return, again and again, for that is where our children now reside. This will be so for years to come and it will change us profoundly. At some point in the distant future, the edges of that hole will have tempered and softened but the empty space will remain - a life sentence.
Our friends will change through this. There is no avoiding it. We grieve for our children, in part, through talking about them and our feelings for having lost them. Some go there with us, others cannot and through their denial and a further measure, however unwittingly, to an already heavy burden. Assuming that we may be feeling "better" six months later is simply "to not get it." The excruciating and isolating reality that bereaved parents feel is hermetically sealed from the nature of any other human experience. Thus it is a trap - those whose compassion and insight we most need are those for whom we abhor the experience that would allow them that sensitivity and capacity. And yet, somehow there are those, each in their own fashion, who have found a way to reach us and stay, to our comfort. They have understood, again each in their own way, that our children remain our children through our memory of them. Their memory is sustained through speaking about them and our feelings about their death. Deny this and you deny their life. Deny their life and you no longer have a place in ours.
We recognize that we have moved to an emotional place where it is often very difficult to reach us. Our attempts to be normal are painful and the day to day carries a silent, screaming anguish that accompanies us, sometimes from moment to moment. Were we to give it its own voice we fear we would become truly unreachable, and so we remain "strong" for a host of reasons even as the strength saps our energy and drains our will. Were we to act out our true feelings we would be impossible to be with. We resent having to act normal, yet we dare not do otherwise. People who understand this dynamic are our gold standard. Working our way through this over the years will change us as does every experience - and extreme experience changes one extremely. We know we will have recovered when, as we have read, it is no longer so painful to be normal. We do not know who we will be at that point or who will still be with us.
We have read that the gap is so difficult that, often, bereaved parents must attempt to reach out to friends and relatives or risk losing them. This is our attempt. For those untarnished by such events, who wish to know in some way what they, thankfully, do not know, read this. It may provide a window that is helpful for both sides of the gap.

I am so happy to hear about Brandon.
I could barely function at work today with the exciting news.
I can't even imagine how his family feels......like they won the lottery.
The only difference is, that money can't buy your health but someone signing the donor card gave a family a better gift than any lottery. Thank you so much to the donor family for giving Brandon and his family such a wonderful gift.

Deb and Brian...I took a whole pile of pics for you of Brandon during his last admission. I guess you've heard that he's a superstar now and performed a concert filmed by Much Music in the 7C playroom!! Apparently he'll be the star of "Music is my Life" on December 3rd on Much Music at 8pm. Don't miss it.

What you wrote is absolutely beautiful, heartfelt and sincere. I so appreciated being reminded of those things personally. It is too often that some of us get caught up in the craziness of life and forget what matters most. What does matter most is people. Things are here today and gone tommorrow and things cannot love us back. Sometimes the people in our lives are not valued enough because we take them for granted. When what we should be doing is making the most of everyday and loving them as much as we can because honestly in a sense we are all dying and none of us knows how long we have. I lost 2 friends to cancer, and a grandfather to leukemia and it was very difficult for me emotionally. I remember being told though by my husband (also named Brian), not to cry for them though, because we are all dying in a sense because only God knows how long we will live. Therefore, all we can do is try to be there for one another in love, comfort, and friendship. I have always remembered that conversation because it is so true and reminds me to appreciate all of those people in my life that I love. Thanks for your message Deb, again it was beautiful and really touched my heart! Also, thanks to your little angel Katelyn, because so many of us are continually reminded the value of unconditional love by her sweet and selfless example!!! God Bless!!!

Thanks for what you wrote on Jacobs site...
I dont know, maybe because our angels passed so closely to each other, we are on about the same page of grief or something. Just after thanksgiving especially things just really got to me. Thats weird that we both wrote something so similar.
I want to appoligise to you for not popping in lately, in a long time. Its no excuse... but we are busy, and Im on stupid dial up now. I sit here everyday checking if anyone wrote on Jacobs guestbook, and you always find the time to check on us and see how we are doing. I feel terrible about not coming as often as I should. I will def. try harder to make sure you know that your on our minds. Its great to have someone who knew Jacob still check on his site and see his pictures. You know... And I feel terrible that I havent done the same for you and Brian. But know that you are never far from our thoughts. Our angels are watching over us and still to this day teaching people about life and love, and close by.
I hope you had an ok thanksgiving. Im dreading xmas coming. It used to be my favorite holiday. Now... just getting through it is all I can think about. I have to be fair to the kids and not ruin it for them.. but it sure wont be easy. Suck it up and put on that happy face right!
We are blessed to have our wonderful men in our lives to support us. Not many do. I do feel blessed for what I have, but I also feel so hurt for what is missing in our lives.
Its winter here now. Did you get all the snow too? UGH Oct 12 and already snow. Kyle plays 5 games of soccer outside today in a tournament out in the snow??? Crazy.
Anyway, again, just want you to know that I am VERY thankful to have you in our lives. I appreciate more then you know how much your posts mean to me. And I will try harder to visit some of the CB sites I used to visit all the time. How awful is that... Really when you think about it.. While Jacob was here, sleeping I would visit what? about anywhere somedays from 20-50 sites a day. Now I dont manage to make it to any? Sad. Guess thats just a part of the grief process maybe. Another reminder of how things used to be. I should have more time on my hands... ugh.

I read what you wrote in Jacob's site. I know the holidays bring out the sentimental in all of us but for you and Ange and others who have lost loved ones it is not just a holiday sort of emotion. My heart aches for you and Ange. Like I have told her, I can say all the right words that are supposed to be said and I mean every one of them but they don't express how deeply I feel your pain. I can't imagine the pain you go through. I know it will always be there and don't worry there is one person who will never forget Katelyn or Jacob. I just wish I could have known them both. I am glad that you have Brian and she has Scott. They loved those Angel's too. They know a little more about the pain than the rest of us. But being a Mom myself I know there can be know pain as great as a mothers or a love as deep as a mothers. Now I am the one rambling but I wanted to let you know I was thinking of you too.

Seriously, what a amazing update!
Your precious "Boo" has taught us so much. It is so hard to think of what kind of people we were before she came into our lives.
I know they always say "things happen for a reason",and it is soooo hard to understand even on the best of days, WHY?
But....I think your little angel was sent to us to teach us very important lessons in life.
We all knew all the "things" we should do in our lives but there is no one but Katelyn,that could have really taught us what we know today.
She continues to inspire so many people and when we start to forget the lessons she taught us ...she is right in our face reminding us again.
Just think......you would have never wrote anything so SAPPY before Katelyn came into your life.
Katelyn will always be my Hero......nobody on this earth could have taught us what we know today, that is how we know she is really an "Angel"

Well you know... I am truely thankful for all the wonderful friends I have met too throughout this journey and you my friend are one of them! I might not always(cough...seldom) have anyone along with us on our journey but knowing we have friends like you have made it easier! I'm sorry our paths had to cross in this way but at the same time I think I can honestly and from the bottom of my heart that the bonds that connect us are that much stronger, so much more meaningful and above all, they are the no matter what kind of bonds, the no strings attached kind we all so desperatly need! The waterfall is amazing! You can tell so much love went into creating it. I am glad you are keeping this page going and keeping Katelyn's memory alive, I get very emotional and teary eyed everytime I visit Katelyn's page and I never even met her. I think you are doing a great job in honouring your daughter. I can't believe anyone would want you to "get over it already" as there is no greater love than that of a parent for their child. My husband and I were out of town this weekend, but I was so glad to return to an update on the journal. While we were out of town, we stayed at a guesthouse where we had the privilege of feeding the resident cat who stopped at our door each evening and morning. I had forgotten how much I loved cats since our 16-year-old had to be put down a couple of years ago. I'm glad you were able to save your kitty instead.
You don't have to strive to say anything new in the journal or even write, if you don't feel like writing. However, I'm glad you do have a place to write when you feel the need, a place where people willingly come to listen and not to tell you that you should be "getting over it" by now. If we're checking it, it's because we're willing to hear without asking you to always be cheerful.

I am not sure what the problem was, when I tried to log on with the link you sent me it did not work, but when I went to my "favorites" file and it pulled up the website, I was able to input user name and password and it worked fine...go figure?!?!? The water garden looks beautiful! Sorry to hear that Brian is having to see the chiropractor so often, but I'm sure he thinks the garden was definitely worth it. As for the 'move on' philosophy, K-dawg touched many hearts and I for one, will never, ever forget her. I often talk about her in my classes... just look at my cousin's little baby who choked on the butterfly sticker which ended up saving her life! Another one of Katelyn's little miracles. Faith, hope and memories are the things that keep us going in life... no one can ever say too much or too little is 'just enough'. I love the story of Wiggles! My cat just had 6 kittens this morning, so I can empathize with being an animal lover!

Hi there, nice to hear that you are doing ok, poor Brian though! Ya'll really did a fantastic job on the waterfall, gosh I can imagine sitting there myself. Debbie, don't let anybody ever tell you to "get over it", send them my way, I will take care of them and don't ever think that Katelyn's memories will fade away, never! Her influence on the world is too wide spread to just dissappear into the night! She has inspired ME too do a lot more than I ever thought possible and through you and Brian, her memory and her legacy will always be there for future generations. My two kids will be talking about what she has meant to them to there little ones one day, like I talk to them, especially when I go to donate blood and explain to them why I give blood. Why in the world do you work do many hours Deb, that is intolerable that you have to spend that much of your life working while there are so many things you seem to enjoy and appreciate. I came to Katelyn's wonderful site thru Madison Louzon's site. How terrific the Caring Bridge sites are. I am a friend of Madi's mom - Melissa. Just wanted to say hello and that your little Katelyn's beautiful smile and story touched my heart. We lost a baby boy at three weeks old on Palm Sunday last year (born 13 weeks prematurely.) This year on Palm Sunday we were blessed with another baby boy - born 10 weeks early, although some rough first few weeks, he is home and doing quite well. His 4yr. old big brother can't wait for him to be old enough to wrestle with! My heart goes out to you and your family.

Deb, I had a visitor the other night, and I had Rob laughing so hard! So I'm sitting at the computer desk minding my own business, the wondow behind me was open about a foot, not any more then that, and the blind was closed. But out flies this monarch butterfly, twirling around me, scared the *hit right outta me.
So then the task of a rescue started, the poor thing was getting pulled by the fan, so I shut off the fan, well the light went off with it. Anyway, it was fun....it finally landed on my shoulder, which solved my problem of not touching the wings, and I slowly walked it outside, with my hubby laughing behind me....

My heart aches to know how much you miss Katelyn.
There isn't a day that goes by that we are not reminded of such a special little girl that touched our hearts forever.
Everything in our lives seems so empty without her to share it with.
It just isn't fair that you and Brian have to suffer over the loss of a child. Katelyn's Birthday will always be hard for you's because it always tells us how unfair life is.
Katelyn is such a gift,to everyone that was lucky enough to know her and the only thing that keeps our sanity is knowing how empty our lives would have been never knowing her.

Thank you so much for stopping in and checking on Emma. I haven't updated her site in forever but I occasionally check on it. She is doing great, we found out that she has a very severe latex allergy. Everytime we had painted our house she ended up in hospital with pneumonia, luckily Al and I finally put 2 and 2 together and the problem was solved. Unfortumately the doctors never asked us and it never dawned on us that the 2 may be related...duh!!! since I noticed you signed Emma's guestbook..I will update the page so there is something new to read.

I went past your exit just a week or two ago. I wasn't driving and the driver was fixated on getting home in record time with minimal stops. How I so wanted to drop in. I know that the opportunities are rare... but really... it is my turn to visit you isn't it?? I think it just might happen. I want to visit the Ford Museum someday and maybe the Detroit Zoo (if they have polar bears, LOL). Just so you know... you are never far from my thoughts.

It feels great and I plan to keep this up FOREVER and I truly thank you because you are the one that got me motivated again! I will be donating blood again this week! :) Yay!

The tree "gramma" planted is beautiful! It will be so nice to have it near Katelyn's headstone... will give her some shade in the summers! Thanks for adding me to your contacts as well. My cousin that is a nurse in Oshawa has had the privilege of getting to know Dr. Dahman and of course they've been brewing up some good stories about me, so like usual I've been taking abuse! Ha ha, that guy eh?? Always looking for a laugh. Anyway I hope your summer is going well despite the heat and long hours you are putting in, but the waterfall sounds beautiful that Brian is working on. It's so nice that you guys work so hard to make everything so perfect for the K-dawg. You are truly wonderful people and parents.
That's about all for now... I'm working part-time at the Health Unit in Chatham now, and taking some summer classes... one more year to go then I'm all done! It will be so nice to be a Monday-Friday 9-5 nurse. Of course you never forget the people (like you's) who taught me what nursing is all about.

I love the tree planted for Katelyn. I am so sorry for not signing the gust book in a long time but I have been having surgery and the lose of my friend Shelby was a bit hard it brought back so many memories of Katelyns funeral and was so upsetting because no chilled should have to die. I probably sound like I am blabbing so sorry about that. I also don’t know if you know about my bad news. The port I had put in 2 weeks ago dose not work and I will be having another surgery so I have been vary upset because they told me it would work. I just can’t take it any more I had a brake down a few days ago and just said that I wanted it all over but my mom then said to me remember Katelyn and Shelby. So now I just think of how strong they are and say that I can do it. Well sorry for blabbing. I do hope you are doing good and enjoying the weather. I will be sending some balloons to Katelyn on her birthday. Well I got to go and get my new puppy she is hiding under the bed. Bye love Justina

Glad to read an update. I know this is an incredibly difficult time as Katelyn's birthday draws near. Alexandria's birthday is on August 6th so we are going through the same thing. I love your memorial garden ! It looks great in the pictures, and I bet even better if we were there. I made a memorial garden also about two months after my daughters passing, and continue to expand it each year. It is just a way to remember each day that I come home and spend time keeping every little piece in place. But alot of poeple think I am a nut ! It is nice to find so many parents keep a memorial garden, so I do not feel so crazy. Maybe it is just a WV thing. My prayers and thoughts continue with you, and as always I can never get enough of your wonderfull website.

The garden is absolutly beautiful.
I still get amazed at how much hailee looks like your little boo. It brings tears to my eyes seeing some of the pictures. I still need to email you the one that i found, i swear they are twins.
