Hi Joanna,

That is such a cute pic! Good to hear about Baden having fun doing things that he likes to do. That is an amazing amount that Baden has raised! Do pass my best wishes to him.

Update from Jo: Baden & Ali raised $1,893 for Toronto Ronald McDonald House at their lemonade stand. They gave the money to RMH at the launch of the new house during the last week of September.

Hi Joanne,

I read the nice write up on Baden on the Canadian Immunodeficiencies page. Baden and you have gone through a lot and it is truly a miracle to see the picture of this cute boy on his bike. No one would know.

Glad that the immunologist was happy with Baden. Hope he can do better on the lung function tests next year. Those tests are not easy. My husband took them a few months ago, the pulmonologist just kept shaking his head in disbelief at the squiggly lines all over.

From 5-7 years old was the worst time for Amal's lab draws and it was so hard to watch him be so terrified. After that he has become quite fine with it. Baden will get there soon too.

Take care,

Sumathi

Thanks for your post on David's blog tonight! I know I am guilty of saying the wrong things too, to people who are suffering....that was before David's medical problems. David is doing better thankfully and we are awaiting baby boy #4. You always give me a pound of courage when I see Bayden!

Finally, new pictures! If I hadn't seen pictures of Baden since he was born, I would have never guessed how sick he was. Five years seem to have gone by so fast!

Rest assured, Joanne, many, many people admire the way you have handled yourself over the years. You are truly the most courageous woman I know.

Hi Joanne,
WOW Five years, Congratulations.....I can hardly see the keyboard now through the tears, just thinking back to that time and lifes changes since.......you inspired me to look back at old jounnals and past memories, Aug, 11th was a "normal" day of meds, sicknress, vomiting and that sorta stuff but Aug. 14th marks 5 years post transplant, although C.J. did relapse, that date will always be special to us and she will always share that bond with her sister....Oh gosh, I think back to my first night at the hospital and as you know, that was the night of Baden's code blue, we didn't think that the little guy was gonna make it and now here we are 5 years later and he is happy, healthy, normal little boy, what a truly awesome wonderful blessing....oh I'd love to be near now to give him a really big squeeze but please would you do that from all of us, tell him we are so very, very proud of him and we say congrats to all of the family, Baden is a lucky boy to have been blessed with such a terrific family, God Bless you all...Sending love, hugs and kisses, Christine (Jeffrey, C.J., Hilary and Laura)

Great news about the yearly visit! Oh to see the day of yearly visits! We are still at every 3 months and looking forward to the fall when we are hopefully at every 6 months! Also, Ethan was approved for the Children's Wish and he just has to pick what he wants, but I think we may wait until he's 4 or 5 so that he has something great to remember. How old was Baden when he got his wish?
Take care and all the BEST!!

Hi Joanne,
I'm so happy to hear that Baden is doing well. He looks AWESOME! Sam just went for his last checkup in June and we don't have to go back for a year too!!! Sam had the pulmonary function tests as well (he's too young to follow the instructions so we didn't do great, but the doctors said that was normal for his age). Have a great summer and take care. We are so happy for you all.

Hey Joanne,

I wanted to check in and see how little Baden is doing. It is always so difficult when issues continue to pop up, it is so stressful and we as Mom's worry. Even though you have been through so much with Baden every issue is so big especially when you know how tough it is to stand by and watch, I agree with you that IV's are the worst...we finally got a port-a-cath for Josiah for that reason because of frequent and difficult IV's, and we totally love it. I hope Baden's testing goes well.

Take Care,

Hi Joanne,
I thought I would check in to see how Baden is doing. I was so amazed to see that you had the words to the Mark Schultz song! I had come across that song before we had any children (while I was in my long car drive commuting from Guelph to TO) and it really stuck in my mind since then and I so glad that you found it inspiring to you too! God always finds ways to touch/connect with us when we need it.
I'm glad to hear that things are going "ok" with Baden. It's hard to deal with the fact that your child will never be perfect like others are but you can always be happy in the moments when they are well. We are dealing with another possible issue with Ethan. His lymphones are a little large in his neck and diaper area. They have measured them with ultrasound and are at the "watch and see" mode to see if they get any larger. From the past issues we have had, Ethan tends to get us stressed with something but then it seems to go away with no other problems.
Anyway, glad to hear that you will be on the sick kids radiothon. I will try to listen on Friday.
Take care!!!

I am also glad to know that you are giving back to your community through fundraising. I have been fundraising for BC Children's Hospital in Vanouver for 3 years since ^Cameron^ was there. Hi Joanne,
Sorry to hear that the appt. didn't go has planned. You know after being though all this stuff sooooooo many times, it never gets easier. Some people will say "oh it's just a check-up" but that sickly, worried feeling NEVER leaves and it doesn't get any easier for the children either. C.J. too had drops a while ago ( she has dry tear ducts -- thus frequent eye infections) man it was crazy around here for a while. I would get sick just thinking about having to do the drops. I feel so much for them. Please give Baden a big hug from us and tell him that we hope that the next appt. is easier and better for him. Please also tell Allison that she is a terrific big sister for standing by her brother and try not to worry.
Love to all, Christine ( Jeff, C.J., Hilary & Laura)

Smile! The life our children had/have is tough. I feel so privileged to walk through these tough times with my child. We've grown so close. Today David was NPO before surgery. I had to step out to get a bite to eat so not to eat in front of him. When I came back he asked me "What's that smell? I want sour creme" Inside, I was bursting laughing. He wanted to eat so bad. His sense of smell was heightened. It really blew me away how he knew I just ate something. When I knew I was pregnant with a boy my mom told me we would develop a close relationship, unlike my relationship with my girls. I did not realize the relationship would develop in this way...through sickness.

I really stopped by to say that I love the picture of Baden and Peter Pan. Baden looks soooo happy and healthy!

Dear Joanne,

my name is Maria José Valença and ,like you, I'm also a member of Barb Ballard's SCID GROUP.I'm from Brasil and I'm a mother to Raphael almost 20 and Júlia almost 15 in a few days. They were transplanted at Duke when they were babies. They are are doig great now, but like your son, they had their "piece" already.I have just read Baden's history and I can imagine how sad it was for you all those terrible momments. However, We can say for sure lookoing at Baden's very cute and healthy face , that he is doing fine. You know what, sometimes I even forget my kids are ADA SCIDS.Raphael knows and understand a lot everyting he went through( is it correct?).He had lots of problems after his BMT.He had GVHD in his skin and is still on a growth hormone therapy because he always had difficulty in growing and gaining weigh. Júlia on the other hand, had only ear infection and sinusitis and you cannot say looking at her she was sick one day.Well, we all have a long way ahead, but I always think that the worst part of our lives is gone.I do wish your son have a very loooooooong life cured.God bless, Maria.

I have just gotten my computer back up and running after a four month crash! I have so missed seeing how little Baden and your family has been doing! I seen a flyer last week at Sick Kids with Baden's picture on it. He's soo darn cute! I loved reading about your wish with the Wiggles. When Christopher was first diagnosed years ago, Wiggles were brand new in Canada. I had been given a copy from a friend who had travelled to Austraila and we had taken it with us to Sick Kids. We watched that tape over and over and over. We had all thee nurses on 7c signing along! Christopher even was able to watch the video and stay still for his scalp biposy since he wasn't able to do sedation by watching the Wiggles. I can still sing every word of every song.LOL I'm so glad you got a chance to meet them all! I hope all continues to be well with your family and I will be back shortly to catch up on all I have missed! Take Care!

Hello to the whole Klein family. I haven't checked in for a while but wanted to see how Baden is doing, and I am glad to hear that he is doing so well. With a few concerns just to remind you of where you have been, it must be great to think about how far you have come. I'm sure you must be so proud of him. I know you have been a great encouragement to Alexa and it is hard to believe how far Ethan has come too. Thanks for keeping your website updated so that we can stay connected to where things are at with Baden.

Hello Klein family,

I have been following your journey for a little while. Ethan Fretz is my nephew and that is why Baden's journey has been of interest to me. Thank you for taking your experiences and doing something good with them. I know you were such an incredible support to Jay and Alexa as they went through Ethan's transplant at Sick Kids. You supported them in a way only a parent who has gone through the experience can. Thanks for the encouragement you gave and continue to give them and others. May the Lord continue to bless you and your children. I can't believe how healthy Baden looks! Ali is a beautiful, loving sister. You've done a good job!

Hi Joanne, Fred, Allison and Baden
I just checked out your site and I loved it.
I brought back so many memories I shared with you, and reminded me how much you guys touched my life and heart and that I miss you guys.
The site was so nice cause it brought me up to speed on what is happening in your lives. (I am glad you decided to put Allison in dance - cause I know how much joy it can be watching your daughter on stage just wait till the year end show - she will be so adorable!).
I wish all of you the best in the future please contact me if you wish.

I really enjoy your website and visit often. Your children are beautiful. Baden looks great. We are on the BMT track for David. I'm very, very anxious. Things have not turned out as we expected but believe God has a plan for David and we rely on Him to open doors and lead us through it. BMT is tentative for July 1, 2006.

Let me introduce myself...I'm the mom of two PID/BMT kids, and belong to a couple of PID/SCID support groups, where I think I found your webpage. Hi Joanne and family ... just wanted to let you know that I just returned home from Halifax for my first meeting as a member of the Atlantic Regional Liason Committee for Canadian Blood Services. At the end of the meeting, they showed a couple of PSAs that are going to be on TV and lo and behold I saw Joanne and Baden. I was thrilled to be able to tell everyone that you guys were in Toronto when we were for Charlotte's second transplant and that we were able to see Baden leave the hospital after so many months in isolation and that this would not have been possible without the many blood donors that contribute to our blood supply. Hope you are all doing well (glad to see that Baden is off his oral meds). I was looking through pictures of Charlotte in Toronto just last week and I came across of few with Allie in them at Marcus' 8th birthday party. I can see a lot of her in Baden. Bye for now and take care!

Hello Joanne Donna Glen here. We met (sort of) on talk message board for scid. I signed off months ago because Evan isn't even close to what those children are going through and honestly it was too much information at the time. I heard about Ethan and was reading his update and I saw your name so I thought it would be nice to see Baden. Hope all is well. We are still at Mac, 6 months later and still no word on a donor. Evan has X-scid not was but it is treated the same. He made it through his pcp like Baden, so I am hoping soon we get a match while he is healthy. I love Baden's pics. I am very happy to have found your web page of Baden so now I have Ethan and Baden to read up on and see how they are doing. The unknown is what bothers me most. Lets just find a donor, but it isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Happy New Year to you Joanne and your family. I will wish for a hospital free year for you and Baden. Take care

Hey Fred and Joanne,

I was glad to read that things are going better with Baden's eating/supplementing, and that he is gaining weight. This is something we have struggled with my son Josiah and they finally put in an NG tube last week, with the next step being a G tube if he starts to gain. It is stressful but hopefully it will help. I hope Baden continues to gain and you can carry on the process of getting towards a "normal" life with Baden.

We think of you often and pray for you,

I'm just checking in.. Glad to hear there is less stress! I don't understand either why some kids make it and some don't. When Christopher was in doing his 2nd protocol, we were almost always placed in the 4 bed room. We were with three other little boys most weeks and two of those three passed away too. I undestand how upsetting it is to you and how grateful you are to be one of the lucky ones! Sometimes I wonder how we can be so lucky! I was so sad to read your update from last Friday, Be brave Baden is really doing well and
i feel sure he is going to get his eating problem sorted out soon.
The doctors are really pleased with him and say that he WAS! a cronicly ill child they did'nt say
that he was still one so take comfort in that and if i did'nt explain things to you properly i'm
really sorry. next time i will wait till i see you face to face and not talk to you on the phone
as that was where i told you wrong. I love you guys and i know you will keep brave for Baden

Hi Joanne, I finally got a moment to sign your guest book. I have been checking you webpage often to read of Baden progess.I'm so happy he is doing better.
We met with the doctors at Sick Kids a few weeks ago to talk about a plan for Ethan and they are saying that he will probably have the BMT around the end of June or early July. He has been infection free which has been great. We have been keeping him pretty isolated to protect him. We are just in the process of getting all the preliminary tests done on Ethan and Hayden, and trying to pack for our long trip away from home.
We have a large group of friends and family supporting us and praying for us. About a month ago in one of my email update to them I mentioned Baden and your family, and encouraged them to be thinking and praying for you. I hope that is encouraging for you.

What a wonderful message written in the journal (May 6/05), not just for all the mothers but for all the caregivers, whether they are moms, dads, grands... who have a little person in their charge. I have to admit that I have, on an occasion or two, pulled an outfit out of the bin and threw it into the dryer with a Dryel sheet because Matt and I wanted to blow bubbles outside with Molly instead of doing laundry. Jo and Fred, you are, as always, an inspiration. Lots of love to all the Kleins on Mary Street.

It was nice to get a message from you. We are in a step-down room now!! Hopefully we'll be heading home in the next few weeks or so...we just have to get Julia to tolerate her G tube (that's no small feat). I'm glad to hear that Baden is doing well. We are hoping not to see him again! Sounds weird but it's true! Take care and many happy healthy days ahead.

A car!!! Wowee!!! I am so excited for you guys...it brought tears to my eyes. Your family deserves that and a whole lot more...but hey...a car will do! ha ha Joanne, I heard your voice on the radio one morning when I was getting ready for work(I listen to the mix)and I knew it was you before they even said your name or Baden's! When Humble Howard said something about Baden's big smile, it made me smile, because I remember just how big it is and how special he makes you feel when you see it. Your family is always in my thoughts and prayers.

Holy Moly!! You won a car! How awesome is that! Now let's just hope I don't pull out in front of you and slow you down too much on the 401 en route to Sick Kids LOL. I was talking to a friend of mine who let me know that you did a fantastic job on the interviews for the telethon. Way to go! I just know I would have been a blubbering fool to have been able to do it. I'm glad to hear that Baden is doing better and even walking. Good news alll around! We will be admitted in to start chemo on Monday so maybe we will meet up again. Always keeping you and your family in our prayers.

hello Jo,Frd,Allison and sweet sweet Baden
I am so sorry that I have been neglectful in staying in touch with you more. I was thinking about you today and went to Badens' site and read the journal entries. You are all going through so much now. I am so sorry that you are dealing with this PCP again. I wish there was some way I could help you all. If there is please know I will at anytime. I think about you all the time and I miss you all so much. Baden, Marcus is watching over you baby just like he did when you were on the BMT ward together. He could not go to sleep until he did his "rounds" and made sure you were ok and sleeping. I am lighting a candle right now and saying some special prayers for you all. I ask that anyone reading this do the same...imagine all the prayers... Joanne, get better soon so you can be with your baby boy(and Fred too!!!). Take care my friends and if you ever need me...
