From Anton Treuer: With painful joy we plan to bid farewell to my mom, Peggy Treuer, aka Giiwedinookwe. Wake at 6:30PM on Saturday, March 21, 2020, and funeral on Sunday, March 22 at 10:00AM, at the Bena Community Center (Leech Lake). Keller Paap will officiate in the traditional Ojibwe custom. My mom has held many titles—first female native attorney in the State of Minnesota, aka Maximum Margaret, Peggy Legs, Queen of Bena, mother of four, grandmother of 15, great-grandmother of 3, healer, guide, mentor, and inspiration to many. She was a beautiful soul, impossible to argue with, fiercely loyal, full of faith in our traditional Ojibwe ways, generous, with a contagious laugh, wise and wiley, blazing trails, breaking hearts, making the world safer and more courageous at the same time, and dearly beloved. She willed some money to the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association to build scholarships for Natives seeking a law degree. Please join her in donating to the
