For those who don't know, I am Brent's younger sister, Maddie. As the youngest sibling and only girl, I always was looking forward to hangin with her whenever we would have our family visits. Mel treated me like a sister of her own, always listened, never judged and always was honest. I wish she was still here to talk to. There are two screens that i can use on my laptop, one of which is a screenshot on my background of her 'four pillars', a good reminder to hold myself accountable and a reminder that she is helping and guiding me through everyday. Happy heavenly birthday Mel.. we miss you down here xoxo -Sis

As sept rolls around I think of you Mary and the boys. I don’t think time heals all things. I do think you get a new normal. I whisper a prayer for you each morning. And thank God she isn’t suffering anymore. Just the disappointments she had to face was enough. I know her spirit lives on in the boys. The talents they have because of her. My prayer for you going on to another year without her is comfort, and peace. Knowing someday you will be united and she will be in perfect health.

I am Brent's first cousin - and the moment I met Mel, I knew I had a dear friend! One of my favorite memories is when they joined us in Galena for the Halloween Parade. It was FREEZING! Mel and I had the husbands stay with the kids and we disappeared into a place for a drink...okay, a few drinks! Who knows what we talked about; but one couldn't help but enjoy spending time with her. THEN....the boys found us! Through her writings and her actions - she taught me to never give up, to keep on keeping on and that you are much stronger than you ever thought you could be! I am also extremely grateful for Mel's family keeping an eye on my cousin and the boys!!!!! :) God Bless You Melissa....you are extremely missed! Happy heavenly birthday.

I read this tonight as I came to mt.pleasant.....to see my mom who is hospice. Don't know how many days left...i read your letter about Mel...it really hit home with my thoughts about my mother... my mother won't be able to watch my 14 year old twin sons grow into young men.

This is lovely, Mary. Tears are streaming down my face as I try to imagine what it’s like to lose a child. Mel was a very special lady and I am blessed to have called her a dear friend. My fondest memories are with her & Brent at our marriage group gatherings and with the whole Kuhn family at church Family Camp. She was always a light in our life and an amazing source of strength during her fight with cancer. I think of her daily during my prayers. Love & peace to all of you.💗 #missingMel
