We returned from Hawaii Friday evening in time for me to get a CT Scan Saturday evening.  I was very excited about this scan because I’ve been feeling better and stronger than I’ve felt at any time this year.  We were getting in between 5 & 7 miles of walking every day in Maui without feeling any fatigue or discomfort.  I’ve also gained the 10 lbs I lost in Africa.  The only challenge we’ve had is controlling my glucose levels because of the prednisone I’ve been taking.  Life is good and we are off to France next Wednesday.

l am now on a glucose tracker that checks my levels every five minutes and warns me when my numbers are too high or low.  This morning at 3:00 the glucose alarm went off with mynumbers down to 55.  I went downstairs for a some cranberry juice and a cliff bar.  While waiting for the number to rise I decided to check emails.  There waiting for me was the analysis of my CT Scan.  Following was the first line item of the report.

“Impression 1:  Numerous ((Greater than 15+) new hypodense lesions throughout the liver, suspicious for hepatic metastases.”

Holy Cow, I’ve got more than 15 tumors in my liver!!!

I googled hepatic metastases and was not pleased with what I found.  It is not good.  I waited for Teresa to wake up then shared the results with her.  After a quick cry and lots of hugging we decided to wait until we met with my oncologist next Tuesday to determine what he feels this all means.  As you may recall I’ve jumped to conclusions before, after reading scan reports.

Well, I didn’t have to wait until Tuesday.  My oncologist called me while I was having lunch with friends.  “The chemo isn’t working,” he declared, we need to biopsy your liver to finally get a sample of your cancer to see if there is a targeted therapy available.  “I’m going to France next Wednesday, can we get it done before I go?”  “Let’s get my people on it and see what we can do” he replied.  I’m hoping to know early tomorrow when we can do the biopsy.  It’ll take two weeks to get biopsy results so we are hoping to enjoy France while they figure this thing out.

Funny, I feel and am told I look great.  Yet, this could get very ugly in a short amount of time.  I’m mentally doing great!  I continue to have the capacity to not worry about what is going to happen and what I can’t control.  We just finished 9 holes of golf and dinner and are both happy as can be (though we may be carrying a little more tension in our bodies).
