Doug was a valued friend and colleague. His contributions as a featured speaker at the Montana Economic Outlook will be remembered. He was respected throughout the state. He contributed to rational discussions about Montana's economy. Everyone at the Bureau of Business and Economic Research will miss him.

I am having trouble processing this news, and I'm struggling to write about Doug in the past tense. I looked forward to seeing Doug every time we had a meeting, and I felt happier after each encounter. I cherished the time I spent with him. Doug was an inspiration, and Lori and I will miss him deeply. Our love is with Laura, Nikki and Allison during this time of grieving.

Dear Laura, Nikki and Allison, Our prayers are with you and wish you comfort as you grieve the loss of Doug. Our hearts are broken to learn of his passing just as it seemed that he was climbing one more mountain ridge to a healthy recovery. We were proud to call him our friend and this crazy world just lost a good and noble man. He will be greatly missed!

Dear Laura: How sad we are to learn of Doug's passing. We have so many wonderful memories of the early years when we first landed in Bozeman and at MSU in 1987 (?) and fell in love with the community, the environment and the new friends and colleagues. Doug's knowledge and love of the Bridgers and trails came in very handy. Our hugs to you, Nikki and Allison.

Dear Laura,
My immediate first though upon reading your (concise and very helpful) sharing of Doug’s crossing of the great divide was to be thankful that the 3 of you who mattered most were “there” for him. An instant later, as I called Evelyn in to share the sad news, a great lump formed inside of me and I realized how much Doug had grown to mean to me, personally.
Now, I‘m passing through the anger phase of grief. How stupid is it that cells can turn rogue and run rampant and destroy the very organism that provides their sustenance? How is it that fine, worthy, people whom I love, depart from the living while others remain amongst us doing their devilish work -- causing division, dissension and hatefulness? It has been ever so; read Job – and don’t expect a satisfying answer to these questions.
In short, Laura, when I grow up, I want to be like Doug.
With sincere, unabashed, love to you and yours,
Loren Acton
