Cancer’s Gifts: A Loving Journey Toward the Final Chapter

In December 2018, Les Whitney went outside to play his ukelele after a long surf session in Baja, California—and he couldn’t play. His left hand wouldn’t respond to his mental commands. Later that day, his left hand flopped on the keyboard as he tried to type an email. He knew something was seriously wrong.

When scans came back, they showed a mass in his brain, and after more tests, he received a diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer.

Les started a CaringBridge site as soon as he was diagnosed, writing about all of the procedures, the appointments, and the physical and mental challenges associated with lung cancer and its treatments.

More importantly—he wrote about life. About living with lung cancer, and about how the years since he’s been diagnosed have been the most challenging and the most wonderful years of his life.

Years into his health journey, Les has become an expert on chemotherapy, radiation, brain surgery, and medicine. But there’s something else, beyond the treatments and the sickness—a growing appreciation for life and the perfect moments hidden in plain sight.

Cancer’s Gifts: A Loving Journey Toward the Final Chapter is Les’s story. In this book, you’ll discover how to help loved ones deal with a fatal diagnosis, ask the right questions, and live every day to the fullest.

His book isn’t just for cancer patients; it’s for family and friends of people with life-threatening illnesses, for anyone who faces challenges in their lives, and anyone who wants to be inspired to live a good life, for the rest of their lives.
