Zachary was born on Christmas Eve 1987 but was not due until Easter Sunday 1988. He was born 15 weeks premature at 25 weeks gestation. He weigh 1# 15 oz and had a long hard road. He spent 515 days in the NICU before finally coming home in May 1989. When he came home he had a Trach, G-tube, breathing treatment every 4 hours, oxygen, tons of medication and monitors. We had up to 16 hours of nursing care in our home. Some of his diagnosis were chronic lung disease, short gut syndrome, hearing impaired (bilateral hearing aids), superior vena cava syndrome and is cognitively impaired. The doctors had no idea what Zach's future held but with great nurses, therapist, teachers, doctors, family and friends he did great! He graduated from high school in 2007 and now works at Festival Foods as a bagger. He rides the city bus up to 2 hours a day to get to work and his customers love him! Now a new journey begins. On June 6th 2013 Zach fainted at home and we took him to the doctor and he had elevated white blood cells by the next day they were higher. The doctor ordered a CT scan and they found a mass on his right side. Never in a million years did we think cancer after all he has been through. Our local hospital transferred us to Freodtert Hospital in Milwaukee Wisconsin and after waiting for days we found out it is Colon Cancer. Zachary health has always been fragile so we are starting chemo as in patient to keep a close eye on him. Our plan is to get the tumor small enough for surgery. Our new journey begins...........
