This is Beth, Vi's daughter and I will be using this site to update everyone on mom. As some of you may know we have been wanting to get mom close to us and this week early Thursday morning I was able to fly with mom into Charleston. Her health has not been stable over the last couple of weeks. While still in Illinois a CT scan showed a mass in her right lung which doctor's suspected was cancer, which is why we worked fast to get her here in order to get a biopsy and a treatment plan together. She has had a lot of back and hip pain which we have attributed to her arthritis. Early this morning she slid off her recliner and was in a lot of pain. She was taken to the ER where they discovered through another CT that she has a fracture in her pelvis along with compression fracture in her back. In speaking with the orthopedic surgeon he shared that her CT scan showed a mass on her pelvis that is most likely cancer that spread from her lungs. The mass has caused deterioration of her pelvis and  ultimately was also a contributing factor to the fracture in her pelvis. It is their concern that the cancer may have spread to other areas as well.

What we know for now is that the plan of action is to determine what kind of cancer she has....keep in mind no biopsies have been done yet. Also, find out if it is showing up in additional areas. Doctors are going off their expertise and CT scans seen so far. They are working on controlling her pain (which has been severe) and getting her more stable and then discuss a plan for doing a biopsy. After a biopsy to determine the kind of cancer they will tell us what options are available to her for treatment.

Words cannot even begin to express the gratitude my family has felt for the many friends (who have been more like family) who have been caregivers to her while she was still in Illinois. Neighbors... Carol & Steve and Chrystal & Al you have helped her in so many ways over the last several years. Pastor White and church family, you have been her prayer warriors and ours! You have shown up always right on time!! Friends....Pam Thomas, Kim Bramstedt, Daureen Cumberland, Stephanie LaBrier, Donna (Janna's mom :) you have been her hands and feet when she couldn't go and do. Molly Guthrie and Florence Daneliuk  you both have been a constant source of prayer and spiritual encouragement for my mom and our family as well. There are so many others that have done so much, please forgive me if I haven't listed you by name.  On behalf of our family thank you for loving Vi the way you did for so long....it gave us comfort knowing she was loved so well being so far away from us.

I will do my best to update this site as I know many people love mom and want to be updated on her health. I am listing some prayer needs if you would like to include these in your prayers.
1. Mom's comfort-for her to be kept as pain free as possible during this time.
2. Compassionate doctor's and nurses-which we have had so far! We have a difficult physical and emotional journey ahead that will be made easier with the help of caring staff.
3. Wisdom- for the doctors and her family as we make decisions along with mom
4. Last and most important-that God would be glorified in all of this. That mom's life and her testimony and how we as her family handle this journey would bring honor and glory to God.

I know many of you have asked about the hurricane headed in our direction. We are about 20 miles inland of Charleston and are not near any storm surge or flood areas. Currently it is misting outside and overcast. We feel that mom is safe at Trident Medical and that it was still the best decision, especially in light of what we know now to bring her home close to family. She is currently at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC. Room 634.

With much love and appreciation of prayers,
Beth
