This fall at a regular doctor checkup, the doctor heard a heart murmur or aortic regurgitation. He referred Sarah to a cardiologist. After an EKG, a stress test, an Echo and an angiogram, the cardiologist recommended seeing a cardiac surgeon. Sarah met with Kathryn O'Keefe and she confirms that Sarah has a leaky aortic valve that needs surgery to replace it.
This will take open heart surgery - the whole deal w/ heart lung machine, stopped heart, etc. We have been told to be at the hospital tomorrow, January 2, at 5 AM for check in. We've been briefed to expect preparation to take about 2 hours before Sarah goes to sleep and the actual operation will then start an hour later. The operation should last 3 to 4 hours. She is expected to need a hospital stay following the operation of about 5 days and an extended recovery period at home following.
