Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

As you know Robert is our beloved brother. He was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia in his teens. He has had a life filled with some ups but a lot of downs. Up until a few months ago (Oct 2019), Robert was homeless by choice in Fort Lauderdale.

He wasn’t feeling well one day and went into a restaurant and asked them to call the EMT. He was hospitalized with severe jaundice. They did an X-ray and saw a large mass on his pancreas and liver but Robert refused any treatment. He just wanted to rest. A caseworker was able to find me on Facebook with what little information Robert provided them. They allowed Robin and I along with Roberts public guardian to consent to treatment on his behalf. They put a stint in his bile duct and did a biopsy which came back as an adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of cancer on his pancreas.

Robert does not believe in cancer and he doesn’t believe he is mentally ill either. So, treatment of his cancer is not an option for him.

His public guardian found placement for him in Dania Beach in a locked long term care facility, Cross Point Care Center.

We are now 4 months past when Robert was found and diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. The last 3 months have been a roller coaster...trying to find placement for Robert, being turned down by countless places, thinking we would move him to CO and that falling through, thinking we would move him to NY and that falling through, thinking we would take over guardianship.  Robin and I visit Robert monthly which gives us piece of mind that he is being taken care of. I think Robert also enjoys seeing us. We watch a ton of movies on his DVD player together, eat together and just hang.  It always feels good for me to see him even if he is at his worst which he has been on occasion.
