Philip Gouldstone

Four years ago Philip was diagnosed with dementia. He was somewhat confused at times and having trouble with short term memory. When we were playing bingo and he turned to me and asked what an “X” was, I began to worry. When he didn’t remember a book I had just given him two days prior about his favorite bird, I couldn’t understand it. When he looked at photos of his children as toddlers and didn’t recognize them I was mortified. This has been a very hard road for him to travel and for us watching as his behaviors have deteriorated and become increasingly paranoid and menacing. Safety has become a primary focus for him and for us. When we started this journey, I had no idea the ravages that dementia could provoke in one’s mind! Intellect remains while judgement, anger, paranoia, and delirium move in to run the show.
