Cancer affects about 1 in 3 people. I am unfortunately one of them. I was first diagnosed in November of 2014 when an emergency room visit ultimately revealed appendix cancer. This type of cancer is very rare, afflicting fewer than 1,000 people annually in the United States. Lucky me! Why couldn't I just win the lottery instead?? Fortunately, six months of chemotherapy rid my body of the disease. I had been cancer-free and healthy for the past three+ years. That changed recently. A routine follow-up exam in October of this year indicated this cancer's brutal, unwelcome return. The stubborn cancer cells that had originally found their home in my now-gone appendix had reappeared and spread throughout my abdomen. 


Hard as it was to find a silver lining, the healthcare benefits offered through my job cover treatment at the Mayo Clinic, one of the top cancer centers in the world. I have begun my journey there, and promise to continue to share it with you here.
