In March 2012, My husband Maximo Piccione and father of our 2 boys Leo and Mateo was diagnosed with Choridal Melanoma, rare form of ocular cancer. It has been quite the journey, the best and worst. Initially he received radiation for his tumor in Philadelphia, PA. In July 2012, we found out through a tumor biopsy (based on chromosomal abnormalities has a 50% chance the melanoma will spread to his liver or lungs. The metastatic Oncologist said the cancer cells have spread. About a month ago, his platelets dropped to alarmingly low numbers. He has an additional auto immune disorder, ITP (too long to spell). Maximo's platelets stabilized and he was able to have cataract surgery in September 2014. Thursday, October 23, we learned that his cancer metastasized to his liver. he has received one round of Y-90 radiation where a catheter is inserted in his groin and beads blast the tumors. His second round is January 22, 2015. He has returned to work, spirits are good. On September 9, 2015 more tumors were found on his liver. He received immunotherapy and he had very bad side effects .He has been nauseous, (not wanting to eat his beloved steak). He is weak and is limited in playing with the boys as he is tired. This Friday, November 6, he has his 4th round and then 2 more rounds, ending on December 4, 2015.
Maximo didn't complete his chemo as a scan showed his cancer had spread more. My father has been aggressively searching for options. He is taking a chemo drug but his platelet count went down. He is back on prednisone and so we wait. He is in liver failure but we are doing whatever we can to keep him here with us. On January 22, 2016 he took his last breath and we were there together.
