About 5 years ago I had serious back trouble that caused me lots of pain and limited my mobility. I learned I have stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column that causes bulging discs and pinched nerves. I did not want surgery so I tried physical therapy, exercises, injections, chiropractic and electrical treatments. Slowly it got better and I could function fairly well.
This Spring I re-injured my back and it was worse than before. I was in constant pain and sleeping was difficult. Another MRI revealed the same problem. While viewing it with a different orthopedic surgeon and discussing my options he noticed a problem in my neck. He ordered another MRI specific to that area and referred me to a surgeon who specializes in necks.
It turns out my spinal cord is being pinched in the C3-4 and 4-5 area. Spinal fluid is not getting past properly. So although my neck is not causing me pain like my back, it is a much more serious situation and needs to be corrected quickly. I won’t go into detail but they will be working on vertebrae and discs, removing some and doing fusion.
I will be having surgery at Regions Hospital on September 13th and probably will be there a few days in ICU if all goes well. I’m told recovery is not fun. I will lose some weight (which won’t hurt me) and will have to take it easy for awhile.
Debbie, Kelly and Jeff will be updating this site as I go through recovery.
(A little note from Kelly -- I am helping my dad set up this website. Those who know him well know that he is not very technologically-savvy. Therefore, I offered to get this site up and running. My father also has a tough time asking for help, and that's something that he and my mother will need a lot of in the coming weeks, both before the surgery and especially after the surgery during the long recovery process. My husband Brian and I, along with my brother Jeff and his wife Kerri, will all be helping out as much as we can, but we will be using this site to update everyone on Dad's surgery, recovery, and any specific requests he and my mother might have, such as help with mowing the lawn or a trip to the grocery store since my dad won't be able to drive for many weeks. His biggest area of need after the surgery will most likely be rides to the doctor's offices in both St. Croix Falls and St. Paul (and to the pharmacy). Since my dad is stubborn and refuses to directly ask for help...I'm told that I have inherited a bit of that stubbornness...I'm willing to coordinate some of that on his behalf!)
