I graduated from Westminster College this spring with a Bachelor's degree in nursing and a minor in sociology. I received a commission from the University of Utah ROTC into the world's greatest army, as an active duty nurse corps officer. Set to attend Basic officer leader's course (BOLC) in San Antonio, Texas and continue on to my first choice duty station of Oahu, Hawaii. On July 7th I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. On July 11th I went into surgery to remove the primary tumor (on my fourth toe) and have an inguinal sentinel lymph node biopsy. On July 14th (the day I was supposed to enter active duty) I was told that my lymph nodes were positive for metastasis. On August 19th I had a superficial and deep total inguinal lymph node dissection.
