Leonardo Velazquez Miller

Leonardo Josué Velazquez Miller was born on January 9th.   His healthy appearance and sweet disposition, gave no indication of any health issues until his 24 hour blood oxygen level came back a little low.   We will forever be grateful that his doctor did not dismiss his only symptom! After a heart Echo and several other tests, he was transferred to Akron Children's hospital for further testing.   More in-depth testing revealed a congenital heart condition that required surgery.  Leo has (TGA)  Transposition Of The Great Arteries. The large vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs and body, are switched.  Most babies born with TGA turn blue immediately at birth and have brain damage.  Leo is very lucky to have been born with an opening in his heart that allows blood from one side to mix with the other.  This provides him with enough oxygen to survive until surgery.  Leo is currently waiting for his surgery date.  A team of surgeons from Cleveland Clinic will be performing surgery at Akron Children's hospital or he may be transferred to CC for the surgery.  Cleveland Clinic's heart program has has been ranked #1 in the nation, since 1995! He's in good hands!
As anyone who has ever had a child or loved a child can imagine, this has been very difficult for Leah to process!  Watching your tiny infant be tested and poked and prodded with needles is heart breaking!  Leah is able to hold and feed him, but most of the time he is required to remain in his crib where he is monitored closely.  She's been by his side, every possible moment.  Leo is calmed by her voice and presence and his blood oxygen levels rise when his mommy holds him.  He knows he is loved!
