Lauren was recently diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma - a rare cancer found only in children and adolescents.  The symptoms started as pain in her right leg below the knee and swelling in that area.  X-rays and an MRI were completed which lead to a biopsy and diagnosis of Ewing's Sarcoma.  In addition, a CT Scan and PET scan were completed as well as a bone marrow biopsy.  The bone marrow biopsy and CT Scan proved negative but the PET scan showed two more potentially cancerous areas in her right and left pelvis.  As such she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma.  


Lauren is being treated at Phoenix Children's Hospital with assistance from Mayo Clinic.  We are blessed to have this type of high quality care to assist Lauren in recovering from this rare form of cancer.  Only 200 +/- cases diagnosed each year, 10 of which are treated at PCH.  


Chemo started last Wednesday and Lauren had no side effects from the first treatment.  As such, she was able to come homeFriday evening and will enjoy a 12 day stay here until the next round of chemo begins.  We are glad to have her home.


Lauren has a tough journey ahead of her but will unequivocally beat this cancer with the help of her friends and family who have provided incredible support.  Shannon and I will keep you posted as to her progress throughout this journey and let you know if there is anyway you can help.  We greatly appreciate your friendship and support during this time.  Love, Mike & Shannon
