I took Kayla to the pediatrician on Thursday (October 5) to test for asthma after recommendations from her swim team members and coaches as she had wheezing and difficulty breathing. While there the pediatrician noticed the right side of her neck had a swollen gland and 3 lumps. She ran some tests including chest X-rays, blood tests, strep and mono. All of which looked normal so she sent us home with amoxicillin and asked for us to come back in a week. We were supposed to be leaving for a cruise on Friday (10/13) so we decided to schedule follow up appointment for Wednesday (10/11).

On Tuesday (October 10) the pediatrician called and said the additional tests she ran were all normal and that she wanted us to see an ENT before we left for the cruise. She called again in the afternoon and said the ENT would see us but wanted us to have a CT scan right away. So at 5:30 Tuesday evening we had a CT scan performed. By 6:03 our pediatrician was calling with results from the radiologist.

The radiologist (and through consultation with an ENT, Endocrinologist, and Oncologist) thinks Kayla has thyroid cancer and that it has spread into her lymph nodes. At this point they do not believe it has gotten into her chest. We've been referred to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.
