Six weeks ago John went in for double hernia surgery at the University of Utah hospital and was doing very well.  About four weeks later he was experiencing some pain and a large bulge appeared on his groin, so we were told to take him to emergency care at the University of Utah.  The pain was caused by a large kidney stone that could not pass, and he went into surgery to have a stent placed so the kidney stone could pass.  The CT scan unfortunately showed lesions on both his hips and spine.  A scan was performed two days later and sadly it showed several cancerous lesions throughout his body.  He has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.  We have been referred to the Huntsman Cancer Center and have our first appointment with his treatment team to address options on August 30.  That is all we know for now.  He can barely walk with a walker, and sleeps a lot but is not bed ridden.   He is mentally alert.

He would love to hear from family and friends words of encouragement and fun memories and stories , as well as what is going on in your lives.  I know you will want to keep informed of decisions made concerning his care and updates on how he is doing.  CaringBridge is a way to make that happen.  It helps with easy communication being shared from both directions.  It is not public.  You sign in.  John accepts your request, and from then on information is shared both directions.  You may make journal entries to post on the site and he would love to hear from you.
