John took a hard fall on Thursday afternoon while mountain biking in McCall, Idaho. He fractured his C2 vertebrae and damaged one of his carotid arteries. A clot was formed in the artery, which caused a stroke. He was airlifted to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise and admitted into the ICU.
He has profound weakness on his right side and is unable to speak, but he has some strength in his left side and attempts to respond to simple commands to move various body parts. Most encouragingly, he recognizes his family and can muster a little half-cracked smile (and he still has his sense of humor!).
His condition remains critical and he will stay in the ICU for several days while the doctors monitor for increasing cranial pressure due to brain swelling. He is being cared for by an amazing staff around with clock with hourly neuro checks and a daily CT scan to assess progress. They have also started him on a medication to prevent more clots from forming.
For now, it’s a waiting game and it will take several days to really understand the full extent of his injuries. Initial physical and speech therapies have begun, and he has a very long recovery journey ahead that will require extensive rehabilitation.
Our family is so grateful for your prayers and outpouring of support. We are so blessed to have such a supportive network of people in our lives and we truly feel the love from all of you. Please continue to pray for his healing and rehabilitation, and for the Lord’s comfort during this time.
