In January 2017, we found my dad had a wound on his leg, which required regular nurse and specialist visits. It became apparent during that time that our dad was no longer able to manage life on his own. We were already providing his meals, doing his laundry, and paying his bills, but up to that point, he was still living independently. He was unable to remember to stay in his apartment for regular nurse visits, and instead would be down having coffee with his friends, which is great, but poses an issue for the nurses because it's a secured building. Thankfully we were able to find a wonderful facility, The Landmark of Fridley, that had an opening, and allows him to live independently but with meals 3x per day, medication management, regular social activities, an activity bus, and a great community for him to be a part of. He moved in on 4/9 and has been in assisted living (mostly independent) since then, with the help of the great nurses and staff at Landmark.

That brings us to January 2018 and he is now having trouble remembering the basics. We have started discussions with Landmark about getting him into Memory Care. It is in the same facility, just another wing. Unfortunately that means another move for him, which really is difficult because he needs structure, but he will get the structure he needs going forward in Memory Care, and the caring and understanding he needs with this rapidly changing disease.

Us kids visit 1 - 2 times per week, but he is very lonely. He is and has always been an extremely social person. He relies on the residents and staff at Landmark for daily interaction. Please, feel free to visit him or call him! He will not know your name, but he will likely recognize you. The Landmark of Fridley. 6490 Central Ave NE, Fridley MN 55432. 763-571-3028.
