James Mahoney Jim Mahoney Update

First post: Dec 26, 2017 Latest post: Feb 16, 2020
Hello everyone!!  Paté here. I've set up this page for my dad's friends and family, so everyone can get updates on his condition. His "condition"....?   I'll explain below.

After suffering with a bad cough for most of 2017, Jim was diagnosed with small cell (squamous cell) lung cancer in September.  The cancer is Stage 3, with some involvement with the lymph nodes in the chest. The good news is that further scans and tests showed the cancer had not spread beyond those areas.  This cancer had not shown up during his physical in April, nor in X-rays and other tests related to the chronic cough earlier in the year.  It turns out that the cancer cells were just out of the range of the X-ray, and hidden below some scar tissue from pneumonia several years ago.  The cancer was finally discovered via CT scan.

He has a great oncology team, and the treatment lab is ultra modern and located in the offices of his Oncologist, 5 minutes from his home.  He has had 4 chemo treatments so far. His first followup CT scan right before Christmas was good news: the tumors had indeed gotten smaller. His current treatment plan is to continue chemo through Spring of 2018, reassessing progress as needed.

As many of you know, chemo really drains a person's energy and Jim is really slowed down, which is super frustrating for him.  To complicate matters, it was discovered when his biopsy was done that his blood/oxygen levels were off, so he is now on oxygen.   Ginny has, of course, risen to the level of Superwoman (well, she kind of was already), getting Jim where he needs to go, and running pretty much everything in the house.

Please join me in sending them peace, joy, and strength this holiday season and into 2018.  Updates to follow.
