Jennifer Hightower Jen's Cancer Journey

First post: Sep 1, 2020 Latest post: Sep 13, 2021
As many of you know, Jen was diagnosed with bladder cancer on June 30th, 2020. On August 10th she was admitted to The University of Kansas Hospital to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the tumor from her bladder which was expected to take 6 hours. Twelve hours later they removed the tumor from her bladder, which was the size of an orange, and another tumor from her colon the size of lime. They found that the cancer had engulfed other surrounding areas and had to remove her bladder, uterus, and ovaries, as well. Twenty-five lymph nodes were sent to be tested, and 3 came back positive for cancer.

Jen is home now, resting and recovering. On Wednesday, September 2nd, she has an appointment at the University of Kansas Cancer Center with her Colorectal Surgeon, Dr. Martin, for a postoperative check-up. On Friday, September 4th she meets with her Urologist, Dr. Wyre, for another postoperative check-up. Her doctors think chemotherapy will most likely be the next step in her care, but are presenting her case to another board of doctors for confirmation.

As you can imagine, medical bills have started piling up already. Plus, it's unknown when Jen will be able to return to work. Many have reached out asking for ways to help. If you are able to, please contribute to this GoFundMe to assist with medical bills and other unforeseen expenses in her future. We have a Venmo account set up @Jen-Hightower as a secondary platform for donations as well. Anyone willing to share Jens Caringbridge and/or Gofundme would be greatly appreciated also!

Jen and Charlie are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Whether you are able to donate financially or not, please keep her in your thoughts as she begins the next step in her battle to beat the piss out of bladder cancer!

Thank you for your continued love and support,

Beth Jacobi
