On October 19th we shared the news that we were adding another 'pumpkin to our patch'. Our announcement was met with a great deal of celebration and excitement. The weeks flew by even as we impatiently awaited our 20 week ultra sound and the possibility of learning weather Emmett would have a baby sister or brother. Our breath was taken away and our excitement was quickly turned to concern as we learned of the several suspicious markers which were later confirmed through various tests, that our baby, a little boy was diagnosed with Trisomy 18.
Trisomy 18 also known as Edwards syndrome is a condition caused by an error in cell devision, known as meiotic disjunction. When this happens, instead of the normal pair an extra chromosome 18 results in the developing baby and disrupts the normal pattern of development in significant ways that can be life-threatening, even before birth.
