Welcome to Gene’s CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.
During June and July Gene noticed that his eye sight and hearing were deteriorating at a rapid rate. After numerous doctors’ appointments, Gene was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor behind his nose.
The doctors reviewed the various treatment options. Surgery and radiation are not possible because of the size and location of the tumor. The doctors recommend 3 – 21 day rounds of chemotherapy. Gene will receive treatments 2 times during each 21 day round. This means that Gene will have 6 chemotherapy treatments during the next 63 days. The doctors will repeat the scan at the end of the chemotherapy treatments (+/- Wednesday, October 24, 2018) to review how the tumor has responded to the treatments.
Gene started chemotherapy in Cambridge today (Round 1/Day 1).
Gene’s oncologist was frank about the difficulties associated with this treatment. Gene’s immune system will be reduced by the chemotherapy and he will be more susceptible to infections, colds, and other illnesses.
Many of you maybe wondering “how can I help, what do Gene and Joan need?”
These are the best suggestions that we have at this time:
Call Gene (763-689-1952) and talk to him, ask him if he would like visitors. He is very social and he’ll know best if he feels up to company.
Send greeting cards. 34583 Hupp St. NE, Cambridge, MN 55008. It’s always nice to get something happy in the mail.
If you would like to provide a meal or a homemade treat, please think “soft, easy to chew and swallow.” Small portions labeled and pre-wrapped for the freezer are great.
Gene and Joan are blessed to have so many family and friends near to them in Cambridge and throughout the state. Jonathan and Joy live in the original homestead next door. Mark and Jani; Scott and I; and Gene’s sister Janelle are close neighbors. We will be checking on Gene and Joan daily and responding to their changing needs as things come up.
We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.
