Welcome to Edie Hunker's CareBridge website.  We are using this site as a way to keep all our friends and family up to date on Edie's situation.

As many of you know, Edie has had her share of struggles this past year.  Not only did she lose her other half of 40 years, she has now been given the challenge of battling cancer.  In July of 2019, a tumor was discovered on her colon, and she was diagnosed with stage 3 colon/rectal cancer.  Her treatment plan consisted of 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy; radiation 5 days a week, and chemotherapy via Xeloda at home.  In addition, surgery was tentatively planned for December to remove the tumor.  Even though her side effects were difficult to handle, Edie has been so strong and is determined to keep on living a normal life.  As expected with colon cancer, it is very difficult for her to eat and drink fluids, and after 5 weeks of treatment, her symptoms became rapidly worse and she was hospitalized.  She was severely dehydrated and her potassium levels were dangerously low.  She also has suffered significant radiation-related injuries, partially due to her previous struggle with Diverticulitis.  Thanks to her doctors and the great staff at Baptist Hospital, she was able to go home after a week, continuing TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) through a picc line.

Once admitted to the hospital, they did run a CT scan and unfortunately discovered a 2.4cm mass on her liver.  Although it has not been biopsied, her doctors are confidant that the cancer has metastasized to her liver.  They are also confidant that this is still treatable, but of course will not be an easy journey for Edie.   She is taking it one day at a time, and welcomes everyones suggestions, prayers, and encouraging wishes.
