Sky Toyne

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. This is Sky’s journey: For the last couple of months, Sky had not been feeling right.  She went to the doctor at the beginning of August 2021 where they felt her symptoms were due to stress from a heavy class load and sorority activities.  However, this past week, her symptoms progressively got worse, so Mari took her to the doctor Thursday morning.  The doctor pulled blood work twice and found that her blood counts were very abnormal.  Sky was rushed to Mary Greeley hospital in Ames where they started blood transfusions.  On Friday morning, they did a hip bone biopsy to be analyzed by doctors at Mary Greeley and at Mayo.  The pathology has shown that Sky has Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).  We will find out next week the specific genetics of the Leukemia which will further direct treatment during the Consolidation phase.

October 10,2021, they are preparing her for the first phase of treatment called the Induction phase.  During the Induction phase, she will receive aggressive chemotherapy starting 10/11 for four to six weeks here at the hospital.  Braden, Mari, and I will be staying with her during this phase to provide support.  Sky will need a lot of support during this phase of treatment, but we will need to monitor visitors to only those invited to ensure she is protected from infection and receives proper rest.  

Once the Induction phase is completed, they will focus on the Consolidation phase.  The Consolidation phase will likely take four to six months.  The genetics of the Leukemia will determine what occurs in Consolidation but will require additional chemo and possibly a bone marrow transplant from her brother, Speed.  

Right now, we are just playing it day by day and trying not to let our minds race.  It is extremely important to Sky that people are praying fervently and keeping themselves strong so that they can keep her strong too.  Only God can bear something like this, and we are relying on Him for strength.  Please keep us in your prayers, hug your loved ones, and remember to keep everything in perspective.
