Tuesday, December 5th at 6:00 a.m. Charlie went in to Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis for a planned open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. Surgery went very well, with Charlie being moved from the ICU to a regular hospital room on Wednesday morning. Since then, Charlie's recovery has been rocky. On Wednesday afternoon he had a small stroke, with symptoms resolving within about 20 minutes. Then on Wednesday night Charlie experienced another stroke which has affected his speech and right side. Charlie was returned to the ICU where he remains today, Friday, December 8. He's in good spirits, all things considered, making jokes and demonstrating his sense of humor and pragmatism with family and the staff at the hospital. All five of Charlie's kids are in Minneapolis, as well as various grandchildren and other family offering support to him and Jan. We'll be posting updates on this site as events unfold.
