Ben was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in November 2010.  After undergoing surgery to stabilize the lesion in his neck, several months of chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant, Ben achieved remission from multiple myeloma in the fall of 2011.

Ben had to retire from his law practice at the end of 2015 because of increasing chronic pain from the neck lesion and surgery.

In May 2017, Ben was diagnosed with another blood cancer, B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He was then treated with several months of various chemotherapies and, in August of 2017, a stem cell transplant with donor cells. He has since been in remission.
