Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are Gregg and Breanna Schmidt from Sedgwick, KS and have one little boy Kyler who is 3. We are expecting another little brother for Kyler who is due February 3. At the first sonogram at 20 weeks, we were told that our precious baby has a heart defect. After being sent to Wichita to a high risk doctor and then to Children's Mercy in Wichita, we were told that he has a small left ventricle , pulmonary valve atresia, which is where the pulmonary vessel did not grow like it should have and therefore is small and there is also no valve, and also AV Canal, which is where the walls are not there to separate the chambers. We were then sent to Children's Mercy in Kansas City for appointments and where we will be having the baby. They tell us he will need to be on medication right after birth to keep the PDA open because it normally will start to close after birth. At about 1 week, they will take him off medication and do his first surgery. He will need a total of 3 surgeries. We have been very impressed with everyone here at Children's Mercy and feel like they know what they are doing.
