Shew graduated from Central Union High School in Fresno with a high school diploma (1977). Shew completed his college education at California State University-Fresno (CSU-Fresno) after high school graduation, getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1981. Shew became an insurance specialist the next year, laying the groundwork for a lengthy career. Shew is a leader and active part of the Fresno community. Shew was elected to the Board of Directors of Total Life Change (TLC), a local faith-based organization dedicated to offering an inexpensive alternative for families dealing with drug and alcohol addiction and rehabilitation, in 2020. TLC takes a whole-family approach to help the individual and their support system achieve better outcomes.
