Katie and family,

I am so thankful for the most recent update, even though it is almost 1/2 a year old! I don't often check your site as much as I used to, because often, there is no new news, which is great, because it means that (hopefully) you're all doing well. I did think of you particularly yesterday, though, because, if I'm remembering correctly, yesterday was your five year anniversary from diagnosis...right? I remember I was taking my ACTs (which is a test for college Katie) that day, and I found out about you at church the next day, when Father John informed us all. It was absolutely heartbreaking for me to think of you going through everything you've had to go through....and I'm just so very, very, very thankful that you and your family have come SOOOOOOO far in this journey. 5 years from diagnosis! And Katie, you are doing so well....Praise the LORD!!!! I'm so proud of all of you, you are all such amazing, incredible people, and I just hope and pray for you to feel God's blessings every day.

Katie,

Such wonderful news!
5.5 inches. WOW! that is so exciting.

We all loved seeing you last month with your mom & aunts at the cottage. Several people from the lake commented on how much they liked our Christmas "pageant", especially Mary and the Angel. You are a doll. Can't wait to see you again.

Lots of Love,
Leslie

Dear Katie, I have been taking a thyroid pill for almost sixty years and it has not slowed me down one bit. It is a pain to remember but wonderful to have it available for us.
You must need new clothes every week at the rate you're growing, and while that is probably fun for you it must keep your mom busy shopping. I love the entries in your family photo album but am glad that I can see the tubing rides on film, not first hand, very scary. Enjoy your summer…some of our young people are already starting back to school next week.

Hey Ryder family,
I don't know how often you check this...but I wanted to send a message to you all, seeing as it was about this time 4 years ago that you all began this journey....and I am always so amazed by you all whenever I think about it. You are just all such amazing people....your strength and courage just humbles me...Katie, I am just about speechless right now, I can't even begin to describe how HAPPY I am with how well you are doing. You're a hero, Katie....I'm practically crying tears of joy as I write this because I am SOO happy that you're doing so well. You are such an incredible girl....and I needed to let you know that. I hope this year has started off wonderfully for you all. And I hope school is going well for you both, Emily and Katie!

Hey Katie and family,
It's been FOREVER (school has kept me insanely busy this semester) and I'm so happy to hear the recent scan results were clean!!!!! (I'm also somewhat relieved I wasn't even aware of anything....as you are in my prayers regardless)...but wow, I'm so sorry for all that you have been going through, but yet SO SO SO THRILLED that the scans turned out to be clean. Katie, you are such a MIRACLE....you are just growing up on me....today I was cleaning my room a bit to set up my nativitiy scenes...and I found a pile of pictures that I've saved...some from graduation, but a couple were of you and I....you're one amazing young lady and I'm SO proud of you. And I love you all, Ryder family...your strength is absolutely amazing and I am humbled by all of you. I love you guys, have a very Merry Christmas!!!! :)

Katie, I wonder how many young people would even consider giving themselves shots? That certainly proves you are a very exception person...but please let your mom or dad do the job, at least for a while.

I have an older friend who is just learning how to give herself the shots she needs to control her diabetes. Shots are never fun but thank goodness, doctors and scientists have learned how important they can be.

All of my friends and I (just like your friends helped you) are plotting and planning on ways to even the score from my last visit. Just yesterday, I jumped a foot when a pink caterpillar popped out of my cosmetic bag...and I have a good idea how it found it’s way in there.

I am going in tomorrow to check out my knee because I’m tired of being the cat, dog and rat when we play basketball. You have been so great going through all of your tests that I decided I should use you as a model and just get it taken care of. You have learned so much more about life than most young people your age. One more reason that you are a very, very special young lady!

I'm praying for you guys...that the right decisions are made. Katie, I'm SO sorry for all that you've gone through, and I'm sorry you get teased for being short. People who tease you don't know what they're talking about....they're just young and confused, really. And, being short isn't a bad thing, either. I have a friend who is really, really tall, and she wishes she could be shorter. But, no matter what, none of those things matter...it never matters how tall a person is, or how long/short their hair is, or what the color of their skin is, what matters is who you are. And, Katie, you are an incredible person...you just shine! Both you and Emily are amazing girls, you have to know that. So, for both of you, please just realize all that matters is who you are and who you are becoming each and every day. I'm praying for wonderful news at your MRI!

Happy happy 10th birthday sweet girl!!!
You are a very special person growing up in a world where it is safer to be the same as everyone else. Please know everything you deal with now will make you a strong compassionate caring adult. God bless and comfort you and your family.

YEAH!!! I'm thrilled to hear (or read, I should say) the news. Katie, that is awesome!!! I'm so proud of you and so amazed by you and your family all the time. I'm sure they'll get all this growth stuff figured out....depending on who your "growth doctor" is, I may actually have the same one. (My tumor was pressing onto my pituitary gland, so as a result, I've had various issues with my pituitary gland/various endocrine issues as well). But, I'm just so thrilled to hear the wonderful news, and excited that you get to go longer between MRIs. I don't know about you, but that's always been pretty exciting for me, Katie. But, anyways, way to go, I'm so amazed by your strength and courage always, and so thankful that I have been able to get to know you guys. I continue to pray for you all. And Emily, you remind me a little bit of my big sister, and I've been so amazed by you throughout this journey as well. You are all so amazing and I'm so blessed to know you. I'm just so thankful for the results, YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been such a long time since we've seen you. The summer just flew by and now it's almost Christmas. We would LOVE to see all of you sometime soon.

Dear Katie, how great about you girls being in the plays. Kevin had the lead in Seussical the summer of 2006 and it was great. Loved the play. Of course the Wizard of Oz is my favorite--has a Cairn Terrier in it! So glad to hear you are doing well. Was great to see all of you at Tryn's wedding. Love, Aunt Mary

I will always think of you when I see darling soft and fluffy stuffed puppies. Your consideration and concern for other children is such a mature thing for a young lady just nine years old. Needless to say, we are all very proud of your entire family.
The things that didn’t make it into your suitcases will finally be in the mail tomorrow along with another one of those soft and fluffy puppies. I know you are enjoying the wrap up of another great summer and can imagine how excited you are that school will soon be in session.
I’ll be seeing you in a couple weeks so start planning some fun things for us.

Hi Ryders,
It's Monday and we're anxiously awaiting good news on the
scans. It was great to see you yesterday at the cabin. It's
too bad the weather was crummy for your visit. But we were
so proud to see you turn a not so good weekend into a
GREAT one with your idea of a "Car Wash" with proceeds
going to the Bridge Collapse Fund. I'm sure you learned from your experience with cancer that people were so generous with their time, prayers and money. And now you
were able to return that generosity to a worthy cause.
Way To Go!!

I had mine the only the day before! It's too bad we couldn't have had them on the same day and coordinated our schedules so we could see eachother. We'll have to do that at some point...it's been such a long time since I've seen you! I hope everything went wonderfully at your MRI!

Hey Katie and family,
I know, in some ways it's hard to believe it's been two years...both because it seems like just yesterday, and because it seems like a long time ago all at the same time, probably. (That's how it's always been for me). I got to thinking about that for you guys...because I remember when Father John told us about you, Katie. You sure have come such a long way!!!! You have fought so hard, and been so strong and brave...who could have ever imagined that you were so incredibly STRONG and RESILIENT? Katie, you are so amazing...Ryder family, you are all amazing too, would any of you have ever imagined being as strong as you have been? Katie, I'm SO PROUD of how well you're doing, and how hard you've worked and fought to be where you are today...a battle you've fought that no one could ever begin to understand, even other cancer survivors, because each person's battle is unique and affects them in different ways. Dear Ryders
I'm sure the Caringbridge sites would have changed the way Bills grandmother felt about the Internet. She only worried about the "bad" things that could happen, but if she had known of the many Caringbridge sites that have brought families and friends closer, made sharing easier, and taken pressure off of those involved I’m sure she would have felt differently. How many wonderful people have been able to share love and caring…been able to feel a part of your family and the incredible journey of Katies experience. Think of the valuable lesson that Colleen and Gary Millers daughter has learned…that a gift of hair is a gift of love and something that a child can do to help the suffering of another child. I wonder, at that age, if I had the dept of understanding that young lady has? Much love to you all!

It's hard to believe that was a year ago already. To see Katie at the movie this weekend, chit-chatting through the movie you wouldn't even know that anything was ever wrong. Kids always amaze me at how resilient they are. You are truely a blessed family! Take care and have a great week.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING and God bless you all.

I want you to know Katie that my daughter Sara is ready to donate another 10 inches of her blond hair. This will be the second time that she has given her hair to "Locks of Love" and she does it because she "met" you through this site. May God continue to bless you, sweet girl.

And I love seeing how you've been there for so many other caringbridge families, and Katie, these families look to you as an inspiration! You've played an incredible role in many lives! Good luck with your upcoming doctor's appointments, I get to have one on the 22nd too! (Mine isn't a big deal, though, I'm just getting my wisdom teeth removed! Yeah, right?) But, I'm praying for you guys, as always! Have a very happy Thanksgiving! I'm so thankful for Katie's health as well, and just thankful to have met and known you guys throughout this journey. Hi Everyone!
Did that sound like Katie Couric?
Great to see the update. Seems like months since we've seen you. So glad to hear your trip was a success and everyone is feeling good. You must be excited for Halloween
next Monday. What kind of costumes are you having? I'm told that Rice Lake is no longer having costumes. Another
tradition gone....I wish you could come to my door some
year so we could see you in your costumes. Maybe your mom
will put a picture on the website. I have all your Halloween pictures up from the past years.
Grampa will be home tonight from Pheasant Hunting in the
Dakotas. I guess they had some good luck, Dominic went for the first time and also got some.
Looking forward to seeing all of you next weekend!!!
Lots of Love,

Hi Everyone,
It's been a week of mixed emotions. We visited Patti who is sick and are encouraged by the news that she might be able to come home...It was also hard to attend the funeral of our lifelong friend, Myke Mercier and Your Godmother(Kendra). The bright spot was having you and Stacey there
with us, and Kim and Ron at the Wake the night before. Her family gave such meaning to the word "Family" and it was so
good to have you there. Last night we sat and watched the
wonderful fireworks over Rice Lake, as we had for so many
years, surrounded by family and friends, and were reminded
that life does go on and we could laugh and marvel at the
beauty of what life has to offer us each and every day.
It keeps us going at times like this. The pictures are
wonderful, I think Katie looks like you Kendra, and of
course we know that her sister is her daddy's girl....
Have a good week.
