I have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Jacob and his family through BOL and CTK. He is a true gift from God supported by a loving family. Hey Karla - I'm still here so THANK YOU for the update on the family! I cant believe how different Jacob looks by getting his adult teeth! I shouldn't be as I know the same thing occured with my niece and nephews faces. . . . .I guess it makes them really loose their baby/child face.....UGH how can he be getting so old!!! The pirate costume is so dang cute!! I am glad he is doing so well!!! Also, glad to hear you are on the mend.....I had a knee replacement a yr ago and you definatly had a much hard recoup time.....

I cannot believe Michael is graduating; but after I thought about it I remembered he was a grade infront of my Emily. I think you may have mentioned it at one time but what are Michael's post-high school plans? Will he be going off to college? Tech school? going directly into the working world?

Anyway, again thanks for the update. Pinch those cheeks on our boy for me.

Hi Karla - I STILL READ - so, thank you for the update! Thrilled would put it mildy that Jakey is able to avoid surgery - geesh, that poor boy. And, So happy to read all the boys are doing well and liking school.

I cant get over "how all grown up" Michael is!! OMG and what a good looking kid!!! Cannot believe he's a Senior already.....where does the time go. I am down to my last one (out of four) - well she's a junior this year but the visiting colleges began for us this past summer....even though both her brothers moved away to college for their 1st year and then realized we have a wonderful university right in our back yard (UWGB) and figured how much money they could save in student loans by living at home until their junior or senior year. She's not quite sold on the deal but then again she's my "wild child" UGH!!

It looks like you all had a great time at the pumpkin patch, too. I didn't see Angela in the "all the kids" picture.....did she not want to go along?

Ok, well I've got an early flight out tomorrow morning so I better finish packing and get to bed! I'm taking a well-deserved mini-vacation ALONE to visit a friend who I worked with years ago. Can't wait to catch up with her and shop til we drop!

Happy Birthday to your two oldest boys, Michael and Devin. I can't believe how much they look alike now that Devin is not wearing his glasses. I had never noticed it before. You have three very handsome young men on your hands; ladies, beware! LOL

I remember emailing back and forth with you when my daughter (who is a school-year behind your Michael, but only about 6 months age-wise) any way I remember when they were going to be an 8th grader and a freshman and now next year they will be a senior and a junior-unreal, eh?!?!? Does Michael have any ideas of what he wants to do after high school?

Hello Schroeder Family!

My name is Leah and I am Olivia Wyland's mom (well, I guess I should say that I am also Elizabeth and Audrey's mom, but Olivia is in Jacob's class at Viking). We have been a Viking family for two years; this year is Olivia's 3rd year there and now her younger sister, Elizabeth is there too in Mrs. Sommerfeldt/Mrs. Henricksen's room. Elizabeth is also Special and we know Jacob from years past. Elizabeth is with Jacob on and off throughout the school day with the Special Ed aides and of course so is Olivia because she is in Mrs. Grace's class! Elizabeth is tube-fed and we hope to someday be able to also call ourselves parents of a tube-feeding graduate. We are right in the area obviously so we hope to meet you soon at a school event. What a fun time! I love looking at all the happy faces. I am sure Jacob was the hit with all the people, he is so charming and such a handsome boy! It looks like your new family member got to have the time of her life too. Now you can say you have been to both Disneys!
I am very sad to see that Jacob was back on his feeding pump. I can't believe your homehealth care didn't give you a backpack for it, it must have been really inconventient to have it on his chair like that, trying to get him on the rides and what not. I am hoping it is just a small bump in the road. Jacob eating gave me so much hope for Parker someday, that maybe he would be able to give up his pump too. Prayers for Jacob's continuing health.

PS When we were in process to adopt our son (and for months after he came home), we got all kinds of nosey questions and comments from those who thought they knew better. We were taught to respond to such things with either, "Why do you need to know?" or "What business is it of yours?" These usually shut people up in a hurry. So glad the van is getting fixed. Bet you are getting excited about your trip. I used to live near all the areas you are going and it won't be too bad out there this time of year. But, the traffic is horrible. When I went out last time to see Selina I was very glad I did not have to drive. If you can avoid the freeways do it! HWY 101 is very nice with lots of scenery.

I loved everything about this update, especially that the church you are in loves Mr Cuteness! They see him for who he is. Praise God!

Your description of Michael could describe our son Chris. He was indeed a challenge to raise, but so vey worth it. I suppose that's one reason I'm so proud of the man he's become: It was hard fought! But God knew He had put a musician inside him (both our sons, actually) and that all that energy and uniqueness would be needed to make it in the rock world. You just never know until you know! :)

I can imagine the pain of seeing that headband on Jacob. Every now and then, seeing pictures of what I looked like before cancer mangled my leg and skull make me sad and discouraged. But, like you, I bounce back! The challenge is not in being perfectly formed but using what we have now to make the world a better place through Christ.

We are going to CA in July too! The week of the 17th. We will be staying in LA. Where will you be staying? All day the 18th we'll be on Huntingon Beach (beautiful place). Turns out that on THAT day, they are having a big NF gathering on the beach. How did we manage that one.... not sure but I suppose it was meant to be. We are going to LA to see Dr. Boles. Our mito geneticist left and we NEED a new one QUICK, so we are hoping he will be willing to take things over. Anyway, I had lost your website until recently. I had been a long time follower. It'll take me forever to catch up. I am amazed at how much the boys have grown.

Wow! How wonderful! Lots of positive changes in your house. Sounds great. Glad Dave is happy doing the bus route . I drove bus for a bit before Alicia and it was challenging. I will be praying tomorrow at 3pm, that what you want to say to the neurologist will be said with grace and that it brings you the peace and closure you are seeking. I pray that God will work through you and this neurologist to help him see the gifts that Jacob, as well as each of his patients and all people have, that they are people first and foremost, they have dreams, goals and live their lives just like he does, despite having some medical challenges. I agree with the other people who have written that this is a great opportunity for you and Jacob to show that doctor how far Jacob has come. Maybe it will prevent other parents from being treated like that by this doctor in the future. I can think of one doctor in particular I'd like to take Jordan to see--the one who said he'd die before age 1. Good luck. I know it'll be hard for you to revisit all those old feelings. I think it will be good to have that doctor see what Jake has accomplished. It may be a great education for this doctor and maybe he will not be the same doctor again and he will be better for it. Jake is wonderful and such a light. He has made this a better world. So you go girl and hold your head high because you were able to see the real picture all those years ago and will prove this dier and gloom doctor so wrong.

I love the challenge these doctors put before us! Mr Cuteness will say it for you .. . Just let HIM do that talking! And should he get shy, let that be the conversation - Jacob David knows you gave up on him, and he doesn't want to talk to you! LOL! I would go to the doctor that told you so many years ago he would not do anything. He needs to see how far Jacob has come and that he was wrong. Hopefully it will help him grow to see how far Jacob has come. He needs help to see what YOU and JACOB see--that a person is celebrated by what they give and by their unique gifts, not by what they cannot do. Doesn't it feel good to show someone how far your child has come when before they said he never would do all the things he is doing? If he still says mean things, look past that at all that he is achieving! Jacob is so lucky to have a such a wonderful Mom like you and a family that is willing to do all that they can to make sure he gets the help he needs to keep making gains. I can't wait to see what happens when he gets the augmentative communication device!!

It may be good for this Dr. to see Jacob and see where he has come to. It may be a good learning experience for him. Jake is not the person you had a few years ago. He has grown to be quite the young man. He can do so much and has taught so many. Maybe this is God's way of telling you that the Dr. needs to learn a thing or two too. I am anxious to see what he says when he sees Jake and all the things he can do. And, I sure would point that out to him, if Jake was my son. I love that you focus on what Jake can do---not the opposite. I love Jake's stories and his growth.

I've seen it once when I went with my friend who has CP. I'm so ADDICTED to that store it's not even funny!! Worst even there is now one in Victoria. I've been to 3 in BC and 1 in Alberta! AHHHHHHHHHHH. I think I have 5 animals from there.

Carla and Dave,
I just want you guys to know that I really enjoy my time with Jacob in the morning. He is so special to me and always makes my day. I love how I can be goofy with him and make him smile and laugh. It makes me feel good knowing he's comfortable enough to open up and let me see who he truly is. That in itself makes me realize how important it is for me to interact with him and make him feel relaxed so he can trust me.
The funniest thing is hearing myself sing to his songs because we all know iam not the best singer but if that means he will laugh and kick his clothes on the floor and be as loud as me, then I will keep singing away. (So I will apoligize in advance for the singing Ha Ha)
When it's time to go, I leave your house with a smile on my face because Jacob is a ray of sunshine and always makes my day.
You all make me feel good in the way im greeted when I get there and also by including me in whats going on. I don't feel like im just a caregiver for Jacob.
Im really greatful to have been able to meet your family because you all have a special place in my heart.

So you've got the nose pillows? My husband likes them the best. And using the humidifier should help a lot. I would think it would take a while for you to get used to it. But the alternative isn't good at all. Hope you get used to it soon and that you WILL feel better soon!

A very nice and important message for all of us to remember!! Thank you for Carl's Birthday greeting :') You know I did remember that you two shared that special day, and I also remember Tom and Jake share a Birthday too!!! HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY Karla, hope it was wonderful!!! We went over to the cemetery and released 9 orange balloons! The grounds were so drifted in from all the winds we have been having, Carl's stone was nearly burried, and we had trouble walking over to get close to it. It was a warmer sunny beautiful day here however, so we give Thanks for that!! Sometime when you get a chance, can you email me how you add custom backgrounds to Jakey's page? I have tried to do it before, and just don't know where to find them, or what codes to grab? Would appreciate a lesson if you have time!!
