You won't believe how grown up Sydney is getting (3 1/2 going on 16...always saying 'Whatever, Mommy') and then there's Mia who is 14 months and just learning to talk (saying bubble, Jojo (from Disney's Jo Jo's Circus), puppy and baby)...she also loves to talk on the phone...where do you think she gets that? Hmmmm... We went to Disney over New Year's and the kids had a ball. We'll stop by to show you pictures!! Hang in there bud! See you soon! We love you!

Hey, Andrew & Lisa, You guys are in our family's prayers. I found this great prayer for you: "God of our life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and weigh us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies gray and threatening; when our lives have no music in them, and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage. Flood the path with light, run our eyes to where the skies are full of promise; tune our hearts to brave music; give us the sense of comradeship with heroes and saints of every age; and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage the souls of all who journey with us on the road of life, to your honor and glory. - St. Augustine" Hang in there! Hi Andrew,
I remembered that you were going to meet Derek, so I checked your page. Sounds like you and your family had a great time! Your sister does look familiar, I'm sure I've seen her on campus. I don't know if you remember, but I'm volunteering at Children's in Milwaukee for the summer. I remember you telling me that I have to meet your nurse Karen. I tried to catch her last week, and she had just left. Hopefully I'll get to chat with her soon! Will you be at Children's anytime soon? Hope all is well. Take Care!

Hi Andrew,
Just wanted to say thanks for your inspiring story! My 2 year old daughter is going to have a stem cell transplant in a month or so, and last week your mom stopped in to give me some details about it while Jenna was receiving chemo. It is such a scary time and it was so nice to hear firsthand what to expect. I only hope that she recovers as quickly as you did! I'm so glad you're enjoying your junior year...finally...and I'm sure you're looking forward to an awesome summer! You deserve it!

Stay healthy!!!

Hey Andrew-

just wanted to say way to go--i saw you on the news tonight--actually my mom heard on the radio that a local CB person was going to be on the news...so we hawked the TV (because she couldnt remember which channel it was-but knew it was 10pm)..it was a very nice story...i know and agree with you that the webpage has brought strength to me-in the beginning when i was dx in april 04' i didnt want the page--but since having the page (as i started it oct 04') it has brought me alot of strength..and prayers and tons of cyberworld people that i have no idea who they are..people that check my page everyday and i have no idea who they are--more people that just read the updates and don't sign...

i got to say that Tom Z is an incredible guy too-cancer has touched his life as he had lost his wife to cancer--and he spends every weekend helping out with benefits for people--many with cancer (he helped my friend with his cancer benefit)...and that really meant alot to me...i told him to call me up when he needs help-but he won't let me-he says i need to get better first and than i can..

i am trying to do little things here and there--i am working soon on getting a retreat for young adults with cancer or survivors--and looking into getting a guildas club here (www.guildasclub.org)--little things to do-but alot of work--little things that can build up to help others effected with this disease.......

if you seem to be an atheltic bug-maybe i can recruit you for a bike ride called the tour of hope--a ride that promotes the importance of clinical trials and heavily sponsored by Lance Armstrong--as he survived a clinical trial put out by Bristol Meyers..right now i have freinds that work for bristol meyers and we can get the opportunity to ride with them...a 30 mile closing ride in DC--i could go on forever about it but won't take up your guestbook on it...info is not currently up on the webpage (www.tourofhope.org) but will be soon...i went to closing ceremonies last year (not a rider-a survivor)..and got to walk across the stage in front of 2000 people--its an incredible event and will probably double the size this year--as the third anual year..email me if you think you may be interested...or pop a note back at my page..

good luck with baseball season......

until there is a cure
peace-love-hope

I just have a minute or two here but i would like to say that i think the cancer surviver tatoo is a great idea because being a cancer is perminent so why not get something that shows you every day what you have overcome. I don't usually like tatoos but in this case i think it is perfectly fine...i hope your parents have a change of heart. Cya later bud.
Love

What up Bud,

I just saw the message in your profile. I love you man, and I hope to see you out on the diamond this year. I wanted to let you know that the tattoo would be pimp because this has been a huge part of your life the last 1 1/2 half years. You should be proud that you battled cancer and kicked its ASS. A tattoo is permanent, but no one will ever be able to take away the fact that you beat cancer. I love you man

P.S. We got to hit up the links a lot this year

Hey Andrew. I'm sure you don't know me, but I want you to know that I'm very happy for you. I've been a member at Calvary since I was about 5 and I was in your mom's Sunday School class several years. My family and I prayed for you and your family a lot. We know what it is like to have someone we love diagnosed with cancer. My grandpa was diagnosed with 2 different types in 2 years, and although he beat the Prostate Cancer, he lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer about 3 weeks ago. I'm grateful that God was listening to everybody's prayers for you because I've heard so many great things about you and I know that are a great guy. Once again, congratulations and I'm sure I'll see you around school.

Andrew, your remission is great news to everyone who has had you in their prayers all this time. You keep hearing how happy everyone is, don't you just want to say, "hey, nobody is happier than ME!" I know how THAT feels, for sure. It is so encouraging to me, another survivor, to hear about you, your fighting strength, and your ability to push and pull yourself through the ordeal. I'll admit, I was afraid for you, and I am just ecstatic now. It really deepens my faith to know what you went through and where you are now. You have an amazing family, and an abiding family of friends who all love you. Go live your life like you mean it, savor every moment. I know it sounds cliche but you know what I mean. Get after it. And praise God every day. Love, Bobbie

Andrew Dorner...nearly everytime I hear those words I get goosebumps down my spine...the only other two words that gimme the same feeling are Brett Favre(He's the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers). You've shown some incredible strength throughout the past year. Your strength and willingness to fight this is an inspiration to everybody who went through this with you, and I'm sure they will never forget it. Andrew - Welcome home! I wanted all your e-mail friends to read the article that was in today's 12/23/04 Green Bay Press Gazette. It is a great tribute to a wonderful teenager. Merry Christmas......

Scott Venci column: Dorner’s toughest battle is off the field

Every once in a while, someone or something in life makes you stop and appreciate what you have.

Andrew Dorner is that kind of person.

Dorner, a junior on the Ashwaubenon High School baseball team, is a real-life inspiration.

Anyone who knows Dorner will tell you how much baseball means to him. But life sometimes takes a bad turn, and this one took Dorner away from playing the game he loved.

In November 2003, he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his chest. Dorner went to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee to undergo emergency surgery to remove the tumor and the fluid that had built up around his heart.

He returned to Green Bay after a month’s stay in Milwaukee to start a handful of chemotherapy sessions. Trying to hit a curveball might be difficult, but it’s nothing compared to dealing with the effects chemo brings on.

“I have tried to explain it to people, but it’s pretty much impossible to explain how tired and nauseous it makes you feel,” Dorner said.

Although he had to go back to Milwaukee for another surgery to have a residual tumor removed from his chest in February, it appeared the cancer was gone.

Dorner returned to school for close to two months, and began to prepare for the baseball season in the spring. Somehow, he managed to build up enough strength and endurance to make it back.

“I was back to my normal life,” Dorner said.

But the battle had just begun.

In April, Dorner started experiencing severe headaches, and his right hand and arm became paralyzed. The tumors, the ones that were supposed to have been gone, had spread to his brain.

Chemotherapy was becoming an all too familiar word for him. He underwent another four rounds of chemo sessions, with each round requiring a four-day stay in the hospital.

Last June, he underwent another surgery to remove a growth in his chest that had turned into an infection. He had to go on high doses of antibiotics, which put his chemo sessions on hold. Once the infection was under control, Dorner had to undergo 25 rounds of radiation treatment before beginning chemo again.

There were some bad days and some good ones, but through it all, Dorner kept a brave face. He admits there were times he wasn’t feeling so great, but he did his best to hide it when one of his family members or friends would visit. Despite all he had been through, making sure everyone else was happy was his first priority.

“He is an amazing kid,” said Lisa Dorner, Andrew’s mother. “The only thing he has ever said is that of all his friends, he is so glad that if someone had to be sick it was him. Because he couldn’t stand to see his friends go through that. He never feels sorry for himself.”

Just last month, a few days before Thanksgiving, Dorner returned to Milwaukee to undergo a stem cell transplant. The expected stay of 40 days meant he likely would have to spend Christmas in a hospital bed 120 miles away from home.

But Dorner’s a fighter, and he had different plans. After 30 days in the hospital, he returned home Wednesday, just in time for the holidays.

“That’s about as good a Christmas present as somebody could have given me,” he said.

Dorner’s health is as good as can be expected, and he should return to school next month. He and his family are hopeful that he will remain healthy, but they have learned never to take anything for granted.

“There is always a possibility that it could come back,” Lisa said. “We will always worry about that, and that will never go away. Any little headache … it will be in the back of our minds.

“I guess if anything, it just makes us appreciate what we have right now that much more.”

As for baseball, Dorner expects to play this spring. But whether he does or not really doesn’t matter.

He already has hit the biggest home run of his career.

Hopefully your counts are getting higher so you can see friends/family again and be home for christmas, which I know you will be with all the support you're getting. Hmm, well I'll write more later if I'm awake and bored but for now Mom's yelling at me to go back to bed. Good night(/morning?) Mr. Andrew Dorner. <3mik

Hey Andrew.....just checking in to see how things are going. Congrats on shooting Bambi. I married one of those hunters too...he shot two more this year, and we already have two on the wall (hidden in the basement where I don't have to look at them everyday!). I didn't realize that was one of the bargins of marriage, that he got to put his deer heads on the wall. Glad to hear everything is going well....I read you have been working on your poker skills. Hi Andrew! Keep up your good spirits, I can't imagine how difficult that must be when you are not feeling well, we are all so proud of you! Things here are fine, the kids at "school" are getting so excited for Santa!! I have to admit it is extremely convienent to ask them "What would Santa think about this?" when they are causing trouble. Last week we even had to "call Santa" to give him a little report of how things were going that day. You should have seen how wide-eyed those kids got when they found out we knew Santa's telephone number:) I know that's probably not the most professional way to handle things, but desperate times call for desperate meassures! As for Maria's little comment about the lack of help with her move...I wonder who came over on a Sunday night and worked for about 2 hours putting a dresser together?? If it wasn't for me and John those clothes would probably STILL be on the floor...not that it matters because they end up there anyway...SO THERE MARIA! Hee hee:) Anyway Andrew, hang in there and we'll see you soon!!! Love, Emily

Andrew--great news. I was a bit worried when I heard about double transplants--thought maybe they were trying to give you two brains! (From what I have heard--you are pretty smart using just the original equipment!)

I continue to be amazed by your strength. Keep it up--stay optimistic, as all of us are. When you get through these difficult operations, just think how easy it will be handling a bad hop grounder or hitting a curve ball. You will be thinking--"man this is nothing. Bring it on!"

Good luck, buddy.

Hi Andrew, I'm sooo glad your surgery went well! I think of you so often and you're in my prayers. Now that I know you like Chicken Alfredo, I will have Brett make us that same recipe, he makes it so much better than I do, he has a talent with cooking and makes me look like a novice. Let me know when you are hungry for it and I'll arrange for chef Brett to prepare a wonderful meal. I hope it's ok for us to visit you while you're in Milwaukee, because I might need you to have a talk with Jason occasionally to keep him in line. Seeing you will be the hi-lite of the trip to Milwaukee, however, it is one of my favorite places to shop also, so maybe I'll make a mall run also, I'm sure Jason will be overjoyed to shop with me. Just a note to say that you and your family are constantly on our mind and in our prayers. We've been hearing that your attitude and your spirits have been positive. Hey there! I haven't written in a while because nothing too new is happening! Well life in the real world isn't really that bad. You can totally tell I'm the new kid because I'm constantly screwing up and asking questions. I'm surprised a customer hasn't reached over the counter and smacked me.- I work at a bank incase you forgot. I have to say though after watching the packer game today I'd rather be working at a bank instead of being a packer player, wow do they suck this year. Very depressing! I read that your mom made you chicken alfredo, if you want really good alfredo get some from Pasquales. I used to work there and they make theirs from scratch and they put a "special ingredient" in there that they wouldn't even tell us waitresses what it was! It's fabulous food though you'll have to try it some time. Well I hope all is well and I will write again soon! Take care! Maria

For some unknown reason you are going to have to endure one more round before you get that good news. I know it's coming, Andrew. Hang in there, Honey. You have been such a trooper. We are praying and praying and praying. You have a bright and happy future ahead of you...someday soon this will all be a distant memory. Good luck next week. Hey cutie. I had fun helping mom be the "medicine nazi" last night after she went to bed. Looking for your vorazorazipidol pills or whatever those were was pretty funny. You're so humorous with all of this stuff and this huge routine that you have to go through every night. I'm simply amazed at how well you handle everything. I know I wouldn't be so tolerant and patient if I were going through this! I look up to you so much :) Love you tons!

Andrew--Sorry I have not been on the website in a while. You are in our thoughts and prayers! Remember that you are in a tough fight, made up of daily challenges. Keep your spirit strong, as our bodies respond to their inner strength. You can and will beat this illness--you are surrounded by great doctors (though I know that you dread going to see them sometimes) and a circle of loving family and friends. Tap into their energy and love, it will help your strength.

Rest up today. Big game on the tube tomorrow night and the Pack needs your support!

Take care, buddy.

You have truly been in my prayers since we first found out you were sick and you will continue to be in my prayers until you beat this thing. Like Emily, I too have started a new job. I'm working at Wells Fargo and wow is it boring! But the money's good so what the heck! Well now that I know of your website I'll keep in touch. Hi Andrew! I have recently taken a job at St. Vicent's Daycare center. It's a fun place to work because the kids are really funny and cute. Last week was my first week. I was helping a little girl tie her shoe, and she was telling me how excited she was for the weekend because she was going to go up north. I asked her "Who is going to go up north with you?" and she said "Mommy, Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma, and The Nut". A little confused I asked her "Who is 'The Nut?'" and she said with a perfectly straight face "Uncle Todd." I laughed and thought to myself, "I wonder if they call him that for a joke, or is that something she overheard!" Made me realize you have to be extra careful what you say in that place, because you never know which little set of ears will hear it and repeat! I hope things are going okay with you. We are all praying for you and your family's friend. Take care! Love, Emily
