Luca’s Story

Site created on June 23, 2011

This site is for our Luca Andrew Ciraldo. He first was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a form of pediatric liver cancer, on June 21st, 2011. Luca endured six rounds of chemotherapy, six surgeries, several complications, and so much more. On December 21st, 2011, exactly 6 months after his diagnosis, his cancer was in remission. Then, on July 10th, 2013, they discovered a new form of cancer, which was thought to be a unique genetic mutation of renal cell carcinoma (kidney). Luca endured a seventh surgery to remove the tumor and keep most of his kidney intact. He was in remission again, but on April 3rd, 2014, he developed yet another tumor on the same kidney, this time larger than the first. After his eighth surgery, he was in remission once again. Luca then went on chemotherapy and lived and played at home. They soon found more of the same by the fall of 2014 and the spring of 2015, and he had more surgery both times. There have been a few more surgeries since then, as needed. He has been in remission now for close to two years.

At every corner, Luca's resilience, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis, and our wonderful family and friends have kept our son alive and happy.

Journal entry by Nicholas Ciraldo

Here is just a short post, since it has been a while. We hope everyone is doing well, and we are always so appreciative of everyone's support.

Luca is healthy, growing, and experiencing his teens. Since the last post, he has gone through two successful annual check-ups. This past January, he had his first visit at what is called the "After Completion of Therapy" Clinic, or ACT. It is designed for long-term survivors who were St Jude patients. This clinic will provide support for Luca until he is 18, and, if he approves, they can research his health status for the rest of his life.

Luca has been more vocal and articulate about his hearing challenges at school and in other activities, and so we are becoming increasingly proactive about his disability and in finding support mechanisms. We are exceedingly grateful for his amazing St Jude audiologist and all that she does for him.

The Champ ran the 5K in the annual St Jude fund-raising marathon weekend, this past December, in Memphis, sprinting across the finish line with his old man.

The homepage will show you latest pics, enjoy.
