Julianne’s Story

Site created on April 29, 2009

Welcome to my CaringBridge page.  Please read the latest in the journal & sign the guestbook.  Thank you for all the prayers!  :) :) :)

In early 2009, Julianne had a sore "bump" on her bottom after riding her bicycle (with no external signs at all).  After a few days, it was no longer sore, and we forgot about the bump.  Then on April 13, I took her to our pediatrician for an unrelated problem, and he was concerned about the "bump."  After an MRI on April 17, we were immediately scheduled to see an oncologist and surgeon.  Julianne had bone and CT scans over the next few days and then had surgery on April 28 to remove the mass from her buttock, to biopsy nodules in her lung (which required a chest tube post-op), to biopsy bone marrow, and to install a central line/port for chemotherapy (based on the preliminary determination during surgery that the mass was malignant).  We are so thankful that the bone scan, bone marrow biopsy, and lung biopsy all showed no malignancy.  The entire tumor in her buttock was removed with clear margins.  Praise God!

The diagnosis is Ewing's sarcoma, a type of cancer that occurs in less than 3 people per 1 million population.  Julianne's treatment plan (as of August 30, 2009) includes 14 rounds of chemotherapy and 28 radiation treatments.

Update - December 1, 2009

Julianne finished her 28th radiation treatment on September 11 and her 14th chemotherapy cycle on November 6.  She had no delays in her treatments due to infection or insufficient blood counts.  She had some rough days, but considering the intensity of the treatments, she tolerated them better than we could have ever expected.  To God be the glory!  Great things He has done!

Between mid-April and late  November, Julianne spent 61 inpatient days at Children's Hospital of Alabama, including 54 days receiving chemo; had 28 radiation treatments; made 2 trips to the Emergency Room; had 5 CT's, 4 MRI's, 2 bone scans, 4 echocardiograms; received 8 blood transfusions; and about 100 shots.

By God's grace, Julianne maintained a WONDERFUL spirit during the course of her treatments and lived out her favorite Bible verse:  "Be strong and courageous . . . for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."  Joshua 1:9

Update - May 20, 2012

Julianne's scans on May 17, 2012, were all clear!  Praise the Lord!    She is doing GREAT and is cancer-free 2 1/2 years after completing treatment!  Isaiah 46:3-4

Journal entry by Barbara Evers

April 28, 2019

Ten years ago today – April 28, 2009 – at age 10, Julianne had surgery and was diagnosed with Ewings sarcoma.  It was a nightmare.  Telling her she had cancer the following day was beyond horrific.  She cried, “I don’t wanna die!”  I learned that day that her favorite Bible verse was Joshua 1:9, which she learned at Vacation Bible School:  “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  Julianne was strong and courageous in 2009, and she remains so today!

Julianne had lots of treatments, scans and tests over the following months in 2009, and by God’s grace she is healthy today and preparing to begin nursing school in the fall.  (She was inspired by the best nurses ever at Children’s of Alabama!)  Praise God!!!

Each member of our family was hugely impacted by what we went through with Julianne.  In addition to Julianne wanting to be a nurse, both her siblings have chosen the medical field.  We have met so many wonderful people along the way – physicians, nurses, other patients and families, Camp Smile-A-Mile campers and counselors.  This pediatric cancer “family” is one we’d never have chosen to join, but we have been richly blessed by the compassion of those who’ve taken care of, prayed for, and befriended us along the way.  Our hearts have broken for those families who’ve lost their children to this dreadful disease we know as cancer.

Above all, we are grateful to God for rescuing, carrying, holding, and sustaining Julianne and each of us.  I continue to pray Isaiah 46:3-4, which became “her verses” before Julianne was even born as she threatened to arrive prematurely.

“Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all you who remain of the house of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since you were conceived,
and have carried since your birth.
Even to your old age and gray hairs
I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you;
I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”  Isaiah 46:3-4

To every person who sent a card, checked Caringbridge, brought food, or said a prayer on Julianne’s behalf, THANK YOU!  We are eternally grateful to God and to you!  And we welcome your continued prayers for good health as Julianne prepares to “pay it forward” by becoming a nurse.

With a grateful heart,

Barbara
