Story updated: 12/28/12

On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She has a tumor on her inner thigh that she had a biopsy on and it came back as Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Kerry, mom and I were at Rosemary Beach when we got the news from the doctor.

She first discovered the bump back in October 2011 and her trainer thought it might be from a pulled muscle and they tried to roll it out with a foam roller. It did not become any smaller and it started to grow larger. When we returned from the beach she wasn't feeling well at all so dad took her to the emergency room. They did a CT scan on Saturday, May 26th and discovered there is another tumor in her abdomen area.

That next week we searched for an oncologist and landed in the perfect hands at Texas Oncology at Baylor. Dr. Merrick Reese is the founder of Texas Oncology and we could not have asked for anyone better!

Dr. Reese confirmed that it was Merkel Cell Carcinoma - a very rare agressive form of skin cancer that is actually in her lymphnodes. The first day Dr. R.  told me we caught it very late and he would try his best but with this form of cancer it would be very hard to fight. Debbie was literally on her death bed at the end of May and has made a miraculous turn around in this fight! At the very beginning we were in and out of the hospital with blood pressure problems from all of the medicines. She would only be able to get up and about for about 3 hours the first month or so BUT is now currently working fulltime!

She finished Round 8 of chemo on December 28, 2012 and will begin radiation at the end of January 2013.

As everyone knows My mom is a very strong woman (strongest I know) and has a lot of fight and drive in her which is why we believe we will conquer this battle. We are surrounded by a great support team and are asking everyone to please continue to pray with us. Pray hard! It is in God's hands and we have full faith that he is on our side of this battle.

I will keep everyone updated on any news we receive through this journal. If you have any questions please do not hesitate in reaching out to me. My cell number is 214-549-9293 and my email is e.vanzant@ymail.com (mailto:e.vanzant@ymail.com)

Much Love and God Bless,
Emily

Newest Update

Journal entry by Emily Van Zant Burroughs

It has been a very long day. We got here at 9 to check in and prep for surgery. She finally went back at noon and I received the call that surgery has begun at 12:40. Dr. Barnett called me at 1:40 to tell me everything went well and there were several holes (not just one) that needed to be corrected and reinforced. The previous "trauma" to the brain tissue...surgery and radiation...caused the tissue to be very weak. The good news is he saw the problem and is optimistic he was able to close up the holes!!

She has been in a lot of pain this afternoon and finally got to rest peacefully about an hour ago. She is staying in ICU tonight and should be moved tomorrow to a normal room on the floor. Depending on the pain level she should be able to go home Wednesday or Thursday. She has a great team of nurses, many who we have had before :)...Dr. Barnett and her have made a pact to just be friends going forward so they can simply wave at each other going forward. Her spirit never ceases to amaze me.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the incredible medical team You have placed in moms life, the incredible spirit You have bestowed in her and the amazing prayer warriors who have been with us all day! Please be with us throughout the night and keep her pain level low so she can rest peacefully. Amen.
Much Love,
Emily
