Been thinking of you lately. Hope we can visit again sooner than later. Steven and I had a fun 2 weeks in alaska but couldn't get a shot a the moose. He is continues to get stronger and more confident. College is going well. Opening Pheasant season tomorrow. MJ and Peg in Minnesota on a College visit. Then in 2 weeks. Me, MJ, Steven and Eric, all go deer hunting in Western nebraska for the weekend. MA you are doing great as advocate for these kids. Hope I can get in the swing again one day. Seems so much other stuff and always feel I am behind. Do check on Lizzie Daily.

Tommy and his mom checking in. Have you read the new Livestrong book yet? One of the chapters is written by Craig Lustig, who is a germinoma survivor. I recognized the name as he is a very active advocate for research and support of patients and survivors and has testified in Washington. He does a great job in his chapter. The whole book is an amazing read.

Hello Everyone!

glad to hear all is till well. i cant belive 6th grade already... ikika is in 5th since we held him back and he is not to happy with us this year! but he missed a year and half of school so not much choice. boy it sure is easy to think about everything we lost when that nasty tumor took over our lives and took so much from Ikika..he is doing well i can tell this year as sports are starting i can tell he is upset that there is no foot ball for him but he has band and does well so maybe that will fill in the spot.. does lizzie still sleep in the day? ikika sleeps away his weekends and after school. but has held a b avarage so i guess he is still doing well...wish we had a book to tell us what the future holds!

Well, Sam is gone to camp and I get to sit here all week and worry about her. OY. Doesn't sound like much of a break to me. That's awesome about Lizzie making it over 60 pounds. I think Sam is almost ready to start wearing size 10 pants...I know her shoes are too small after wearing them for 3 years. We just increased her gh to 1.1. She's still doing the shots herself, she said she wouldn't be able to do over 0.9 but once again, she has surprised herself. And yes, we'll be at camp next year, we can't wait!!!

Horray for the great report. Knew everything would be alright. We have relay for life tonight and Steven is speaking. I just got to read it and he did a wonderful job. Thought I better sign in since I have the honor of being mentioned in MA journal entry. MA. believe it or Not Peggy actually made the entry. It was a great one. She doesn't believe me when I tell her she does a good job of updating and refuses to do so unless noteworthy events occur. Will be thinking about you at Nag's Head. What a great time last year. Hey our 28th is coming up in DEC. We should do something special for 30. Miri's family left today and she leaves tomorrow lots of good tears around here the next 24 hours. Steven is doing great. Working him hard in the field on the tractors for the summer. Preparing for his moose hunt this fall. monday marks 3 years since dx. Life changing.

I enjoy reading your journal entries. We head to Memphis June 1st. I'm stressing out already. The kids want to do some sightseeing in Memphis. That will be fun as along as there's NOT any glitches in the test results.

Once we get thru June at St. Judes, our summer should be FUN. We're planning a "triangle" trip......from Missouri, to Penn to Florida and back home. We'll be driving thru Virginia! I hope the kids cooperate!

I am visiting from the PBT group. I laughed when I read the "dance" story. It made me think of what my son Elliott told me after he came home from his first junior high dance. He said that he just hung out with his friends (boys) until some girls came over and asked them to dance. I asked him if they danced with the girls, but he just said, "NO! We just walked away." Hi...actually, the day I took Sam her medicine, she had gone to the fridge without advising the office and when she brought the bottle in the office, the secretary wanted to know "why she had meds on her". They can't even keep a tylenol on them. She didn't realize that Sam had grabbed it from the fridge. So I have a bottle she keeps at school, the other one lasted all this time. I try to give her the DDAVP twice a day, but we sometimes forget then she needs to take it at school. She's doing well. Tried to make an appt with endo today, he's booked thru July, and they won't make any more appts. How ridiculous is that!!! So I'll be calling him on his office number and asking him to fit us in, he usually does. And the neurosurgeons said he didn't want to see her for a year!! That's a funny one. Hope you had fun at the beach, I'm jealous!!!

We went to see Emerald on Saturday and we're going to her bday party on Sunday. She's so beautiful and I'm so sad for her.

I'm writing this to you and to the mom who just wrote in about her 18 year old son, Mike, who is receiving radiation for germinoma. I'm so glad, Lisa, that you found Lizzie's site. My son, Tom, now 21, was diagnosed with a germinoma last summer, received radation in the fall, and is doing fine now, is even back at college.

Hi, we got home today....and she needs to drink 60 ounces a day, so I guess we'll be counting ounces now. And a little note about Sam giving herself her shots, she wouldn't be able to do it if the dose were bigger, she says anything over .9 hurts and we'd have to do it, I'm sure lizzies dose is larger.

Wow is all I can say. Who would have known 2 1/2 years ago when we met that we would see such amazing stories. Your story brought me to tears. Life is good and it is so good to hear such good out comes. Steven called home yesterday all excited, he made the Deans list last semester. He was so worried half way into the first semester and I told him to just do his best and learn, we didn't care what kind of grades he got. To be patient, that college is a real adjustment. Well, he worried for nothing. He is settling into college and loves the praise band that he is in. They travel to churches on weekends and sometimes during the week to youth groups. Basking in the sun sounds like fun, get some rays for me. So glad you guys were able to get away and enjoy. We miss you all. How's Jays training coming? I finally got to run outside for the first time in weeks. Has been to cold. Tell everyone Hi.

Wow, I have been really bad at keeping up with your journal entries! I'll definitely make it a resolution to read this everyday:) You mentioned that this time 4 years ago is when everything began with Lizzie, something I guess I have pushed out of memory at times. You had to call me when I was in DC visiting some federal building there to tell me that Lizzie had a brain tumor, the doctors had confirmed it on the day before the inaguration. Great day huh? Sexy Bachelor Mr. Tom Gill had to break the news to me, fun job right? haha. Well, I love you tons and tons and can only thank God that Lizzie is here today and doing as well as she is. And thank God daily that you and dad are such great parents and refused to accept anything but positive news (atleast that's how you made it out to us other kids:)

I too have been reflecting.... mostly because Steven has I guess. We had a really good trip to Memphis. While there I quizzed friends Katie and Wade (Drake's mom and dad)if they ever went into the closet and cried and asked the "what if" questions. Wade did but Katie said she did not. She said that because Drake was Happy she could be too. I am sure that because she has been positive has much to do with his happiness as well. I don't know why that struck me as being so simple yet so deep. But it did. Sooo I guess I will try harder not to think about all that stuff as much. Because Steven doesn't. He is in the Here and Now. We had a really good Holiday. Steven left for college today and Justin will on Wednesday. The house will be quieter once again ;-( But I suppose that is as it should be. Growing them up to be independent. Making their own lives. MA it is ok to reflect and to ask unanswerable questions. It is theraputic, whether we like the answeres or not. Call sometime. Happy New Year!! Give Lizzy a Hug and say Hi to Jay!

First of all we are praying for your mother to have a fast recovery. Second we are so sorry we missed you. We went to the grizzly house and even left a message, but we didn't have phone #'s either. So glad I got to give Lizzie & Jay a hug at mile 4 or 5. After the race we were talking with 3 guys that had run also. We asked where they were from and they said Ohio. Well they asked us where we were from and we said Nebraska. They asked if we knew Dorschels and we just about fell over. They said they were looking for you last night. Anyway we had a really nice visit with Bob and his two friends. What a small world. I am so glad Lizzie's scans were good and you got to spoil Seth & Anita's baby. Hello. Happy Birthday! My daughter, Cheyenne, was diagnosed with a germinoma brain tumor in March of 2004 and went through chemo and radiation and is now cancer free. I am glad to be meeting others with the same condition. God has been our strength through this all and we will be praying for everyone we meet through the internet.

Hi all,
Michelle reminded me yesterday that Lizzie's birthday was Tuesday. She has such a good memory. So we want to wish our sweet Lizzie a very Happy Happy Birthday.

We are doing fine and the harvest is in, as of yesterday afternoon. Everyone was so anxious for it to be done. Good yields and no major problems or injuries. God has truely blessed us.

I have the extraordinary pleasure of being with Lizzie at school every day. She's making tremendous progress this year. I know it's not easy for her but her "can do" attitude is such an inspiration. We're towards the end of a huge construction project - adding 14 classrooms, etc. This work was supposed to be finished mid-August but we're still waiting! Lizzie's 4 fifth-grade teachers are housed now in the gym(!!!) with partitions dividing the gym into 4 "classrooms". Lizzie has taken it all in stride and sees it as a grand adventure. She's assisting, as a student selected by her teachers, on a student search committee, providing input as our school chooses a new President. She was a valuable addition in our interview this afternoon and I look forward to her participation in the 4 more interviews scheduled in the next 2 weeks. She's a delightful, most appreciative, young lady, with poise that would make most adults envious. There's nothing that brightens my day like being in the school halls and hearing a perky, "Hey, Nancy!" and seeing her smiling face. Not only are we looking forward to getting settled in our new building, but we are also working with MaryAlice to select the latest in computer technology to assist Lizzie in her studies. This particular technology will be a new frontier for us but not new in the world of computers. It will allow the transfer of writing from a white board to a laptop computer which will allow Lizzie to better see what is being presented as well as save the information for printing later to study. It's exciting to be a part of this and to share in Lizzie's life!

Glad to hear you had such a nice visit with family. Family is very precious and we sure enjoy it when we get together.
Sorry Liz is having trouble, so many adjustments. Steven has his days also, but we just keep encouraging and supporting him. Try to focus on the positives.
We are full swing into harvest and the crops are doing very well. Helped in the field today.
I got to see the tour of hope come through Nebraska last week and even went to Lincoln for a rally. Got to give Elizabeth a hug and say HI. It was really neat to see and what a story they all have to tell.
I'm running the Marathon for St Jude, so maybe we will get to see you in Memphis in December.

It's always good to be able to relate to others about the ongoing effects of cancer with our children. glad to see everything seems to be going good. its been rainging he rfor the last 4 days. i think winter has come a bit early this year. im not looking forward to the icy roads. ikika had his testing for the growth and we will find out in a couple of weeks what the results are. our insurace finally decided to cover it all. they are making ikika their first case on a new program they are doing for high cost meds. so we were happy. ikika hes not so happy about the shots but i told him what you said about lizzie and hers. so he felt a bit better.well im off to the kitchen to start breakfast so you all have a wonderful week....

It's been a while since I've been on the site - probably because we just pop across the street when we want to visit - but I thought it important to put in the journal for others to see, and for you to hear, what your experiences are meaning to others. Many of us have lived with you in joy, fear, tears, triumphs, faith. I have learned so much from each of you; each in your own, individual way have given me strength, determination, and independence. It amazes me how those lessons now pass to others who face challenges. I have a friend who will travel to Denver with her daughter to enter a program that they had to be accepted into. I have shared with her so much I observed from Mary Alice: Try to make each day special; do something fun so that the children will associate it positively rather than as an unpleasant memory. MA - you are amazing at making the most of each moment; each day; and seeing the beauty in every minute, and Lizzie follows right in your footsteps. The living experiences in this center will be like that of the Ronald MacDonald House. Again, so much of what you experienced has been so helpful to this family; just in knowing what to expect. Mary Alice and Lizzie, Glad you had fun on your vaca. We're taking a small one next weekend. This weekend we're going to Chicago, which is always a blast. The DI is going really well, she's on the nose spray now, as we had trouble getting the solution to use with the canula. She's eating non stop and is doing really well, except she still has the fluid pocket on her back and a small infection in her incision on her head. other than that, she's doing great... Made it home safe. Peg and I even played in a golf tourney on saturday. Our time with all of you was the best in a long time. So much fun and fellowship. You gave us a most wonderful gift. My daughter Alyssa was diagnosed with a hypothalamic glioma 11 days ago...it's nice to see that you are doing so well. Her biopsy came back benign and she is healing quite well. We get her port put in and her tubes put in (she has had chronic ear infections so to ileviate any fevers...) this coming Thursday. Pray for her would you? She is starting chemo next week. I'll keep you posted - you are a blessing sweetie.

Sam's eyes were actually just checked a few days ago and doc said they were fine. Her pupils are usually different sizes, I have the same thing, same eye but last night it just seemed bigger than usual. But she's doing better today, spending the night at Nana's. Have a safe trip!!!

David is 11, he just had his second brain surgery (for re-growth)and will start another year of chemo the end of July...because he told his oncolgist it was time for him to go on vacation and those were the plans he had made for this summer before the re-growth...so off we go! Good to hear from Bob and Bart! Jack and I just went to his 60th reunion
at Tech. It was great. There were 32 grads and 50 in all with wives.
Good place for widows to meet someone. The cancer survivor walk

I am so glad that you are close to DC and will get to witness congress giving money to help build the new rad/onc. building. Yes, I am positive that this will come to pass. Of course we think St. Jude is the best place for any child to go to with cancer or a catasrophic disease. I have been busy driving bus for track meets, district music, field trips, etc. Plus trying to get Steven's scrap book up to date and getting pictures in photo albums. But life is good and we are all good. Have a great trip to DC and we need to talk and hear each others voice again, sometime.

What is cold in Virginia?, We actually broke the freezing mark today. First time since mid January. 20 inches of snow finally melting. Hi! Thanks for signing our guestbook! I noticed that your daughter had surgery at John Hopkins, we used to live in Baltimore, MD and York, PA so we weren't far from there at all. We moved to SC and one month later Kaylyn was diagnosed, we strongly believe that God planned it that way because of the wonderful doctors here, not to mention if we still lived there we would've prefered John Hopkins (instead of York) but last winter we probably wouldn't of been able to transport to and from the hospital very well because of snow, not to mention it takes over an hour from York. Or if we still lived there and didn't go to John Hopkins we probably would've went to Hershey which is an hour away as well. So I guess it all worked out for the best, the hospital here was just 15-20 minutes away. Anyways, I'm glad Julia has made it so far, it's so wonderful to hear of children who're beating tumors! I'll be praying she'll be free forever! Take Care : )

Glad to have these two warm days to get outdoors and poke about. Was over at ECU last evening for a great Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble performance. Had the second cataract surgery last Monday in Greenville. It is great to see this well again and did not realize it had gone that far downhill! Naomi is very busy at Urgent Care but happy with it. Glad Faye/Jack can visit Marge.
Hope the Nutritionists can give you a bit of help on the weight gain.

Sound like you had a great weekend with the girls. It's always fun to celebrate with family and friends. Happy belated Birthday Becca. We are cold and snowy hear as well. We had 8-10 inches of snow on Sunday & Monday. No school Monday and late start on Tuesday. The temperature yesterday was 2 degrees and maybe 8 degrees today. Wind chills are below zero. But, you know this is winter and at least we have warm houses to stay in. Michelle and a couple of here friends went ice skating on Sunday when it was snowing. It was fun and beautiful. Wasn't as cold then, only 22 degrees. Praise God that Lizzie is 3 years out. She looks so good and has such a great attitude. Always so happy and such a loving spirit.

We are working on dates as to when we go back. Had them set up and then Steven tells me the Seniors sneak trip might be then. So talked to St Jude and they are trying to change them. The only problem is they were going to do endocrine testing this time and said it might be hard to get changed. Are looking at March 29th and 30th. Steven is going to an indoor archery shoot this weekend. Has been practicing on Tuesday evenings in Hastings. Will go with a cousing of Lyle's.

Poor Lyle has been out in this cold weather yesterday and today. The co-op is hauling corn and so he has to get tractors and augers going for that.

Stay warm and drink a cup of coffee for me.

We had the terrible cold weather last week and everyone blamed us for bringing to Memphis. We did have a couple of nice days though, Steven & I went golfing on New Years Day. Now thats a rare one.

Wish you could have been in Memphis with us too. We did a lot of waiting. Steven was able to hand out some of his senior pictures and get lots of hugs.

So glad your family had such a nice holiday. It is always hard to see them leave, no from experience. But I guess that is what we all worked for, was to have them become independent.

Steven is off to a college to participate in an honor choir show. Michelle is home sick with a stomach ache and headache. Lyle has been coughing for quite a few days and praying that it won't settle in his lungs.

Glad all is going well. I have been checking on you but unable to sign much lately. Hayden is consuming alot of time. I guess he's making up for time that I was with Lindsey in the hospital. We are plugging along....still trying to recover from this last year. Lindsey is doing great. I noticed she tires more easily and we got those unexplained fevers and illnesses but they go as quickly as they come. Take care.

Hi All,
Just had to wish you all a Happy New Year!!! Lyle & I went out for an evening meal and a movie. Steven had friends over and Michelle babysat. When we returned the yard was full of vehicles and Michelle and her friends were baking cookies. This was at 12:30a.m. Life is so good. Last year Steven was having to wear a mask everywhere we went and we were getting ready to go back for his last round of chemo. A lot has changed in a year. We are also blessed with having our children home for Christmas and New Year.
Can't thank you enough for letting Michelle and I hang out with you in Memphis. That was so much fun and I have recovered and am running 4 miles again. Got to keep that dog in shape.

We too had a great thanksgiving with all the family home. The only dissapointment was that Justin came down with this flu bug thats going around. Ran a temp. for about 4 days. I will take him back to the airport tomorrow. Steven was off for the weekend goose hunting in South Dakota. Was to late to drive home last night, so should be in sometime this morning. Michelle had a couple of friends over last night and is always fun to hear girls giggling and carrying on. Lyle coaches his first game on Thursday & Friday nights. He is loving coaching. Hi all,

Sorry I have not been very good at keeping in touch with you all. MA you are so good at signing in Steven's guestbook, thank you. Just got back from Lincoln, where I picked up Justin. He is home for almost 2 weeks from college. So good to visit on our ride home and will be fun having another one in the house for a while. Only problem is he is on western time and loves to stay up late and sleep late. We have been having above normal temps here and has been wonderful. But sounds like it may come to an end this weekend, with the chance for snow. Haven't run in snow yet, that would be a new experience. I too am tapering down for the next couple of weeks. It seems weird after all the long runs I have done. Can't wait to see you all and I know that you are anxious for Lizzie's scans, but she is doing so well, the news can't be anything but good. Michelle is so looking forward to coming with me, but I'm afraid the time down their is going to fly by to fast. What a great picture. Lizzie you look great as always. No we have not got lost in the pumpkin patch, as we don't even have one. We did finish harvest last night, yahoo! I have been busy driving bus and when not driving bus helping with harvest and getting those runs in. Going to a Christian womens retreat this weekend. The kids are going to a youth retreat at Nebraska Christian College. So, Lyle will be on his own for a couple of days. Maybe he'll get some bookwork caught up or who knows what. Steven is out bow hunting for deer right now and is enjoying the time that he missed last year. They both had fantastic nine week report cards. Steven hasn't seem to skip a beat with his school work. Can't wait to see you in Memphis. Until then have a great fall.

Headed up,on Friday, to the Boone area to visit kin at their mountain cabin for the weekend. Back on Sunday night. Then on Nov 6, We will go down to Port of Spain, Trinidad, for a long weekend to renew n revive. Naomi will learn what the tropics can be.

We may also inquire about changing the memorial service to include friends since it is for families only right now. I would love to incorporate Neena's idea. The Sunny Day Service would be great since these are kids that are cancer free. What do you think? We of course would ask Neena. Taylor really prompted this whole thing and although she is an angel I think it would be a great way to honor her. Hi All,
Sounds like Florida was a great time. Family is very precious and we sometimes take it for granted. Boy, I thought I've been busy, but I guess we all have our own busyness. We are done harvesting soybeans and milo, but have just started picking corn. With corn harvest comes some late nights as they have to check the dryers frequently through the night. And those dreaded break downs. But all is good and the weather is perfect for harvest. Steven and Michelle have homecoming this week and a dance tonight. Steven is one of three candidates for homecoming King and we of course are so proud of him, for all of his accomplishments. His balance seems to improve all the time and doing well in school. Has been busy doing scholarships.
I know that you are worried about Lizzies weight and all, but she is strong and I am confident that she will surprise you one of these days with some gains. MA you're a great mother and don't forget it.

First I hope you'll have a safe and happy trip. Can we squeeze in the suitcase? I'm so glad LIzzie is enjoying school and able to do something "normal".

MA,
I feel like I am floundering too. We went from visiting the clinic 3,4,5 x's a week to monthly visits. With our first actually being almost a month and 1/2. I thought gosh I can't wait until things slow down...monthly visits will be great but I am feeling a little stressed about not have blood counts. That was my safety net. I guess with each phase comes a new worry and a way of trying to adapt and adjust. Oh well...I'll get there. It didn't help that Lindsey got the fever that was going around and although I know it's just a "typical" fever it still makes me have a pit in my stomach. It hard to explain to people that the minor things are just NOT minor to me. It's like we've been taken to the other side...the dark one and we know the other side means cancer for our kids..
Sorry for rambling. Anyhow, I think the whole clinic idea is awesome. This whole experience has changed me and I really can't sit idly by anymore. I want to be involved.
Maybe in a few months it is something Neena will want to become involved with. I definetly think it should be at her own pace. I talked with her the other day and tried to call several times but haven't spoken with her again. I will try again. Take care.

All is well here on Edgewater Rd - Washington. We had power restored today(Friday) at 4;45 PM and it is great to have it! I had just bought an Alladin kerosene incandescant lamp for use at night so we could read...had cooked on the grill after noontime yeaterday. WOW! that tree!! I mentioned to Faye and Jack that we had just cut out four big oaks last week, 'cause they might fall in a hurricane. Glad we did. I will put the sailboat back in her slip tomorrow and launch the "Da skiff" and tie her back up at the dock on Jordan Creek.

Glad nobody was hurt and sorry about all the damage.

MA and Jay - today the 1/2 marathon was re-broadcast on tv and Wayne watched - saw Jay's interview - was exciting. I have been away from my computer for a few weeks now, so good to catch up on your journal entries and with our visit today. My heart aches for Neena and Terry and I have feared this end for some while now about Taylor, but I am trying in my own life to turn things I cannot control over to God and trust Him. That's all I know to do. Am concerned now about Pappy and need to get more info from you about him, and will do over the next few days. All is well on our end - although please keep Kevin in your prayers as he is now driving and I am so anxious that he use good judgment!!! That is not always the case with him, and I worry so, so please keep him in your prayers.

So glad Lizzie is adjusting well to school. Steven seems to be doing well also. Meet with Mrs. Crandall yesterday to go over Steven's 504 plan, made a few changes. We will meet with his core teachers next week, to see how they feel he is doing in class. We are to have a gorgeous day todat upper 70's. Cloudy and rainy the past couple of days, even had to run in the rain & wind. No fun, hope I don't have to do that very much. Lyle is busy getting augers, dryers, machinery and all ready for harvest. I'm guessing we might start in a week or so. Eric is coming home this weekend and will celebrate his 23rd birthday. Going to make him a peach pie. Have a great weekend. We think about you often.

It was such a special occasion to be included in Lizzie's "planning for a new school year" meeting today. What an inspiration she is to us all at school -( and everywhere else too!) we see her coming and just laugh. Her sunny, caring disposition endear her to everyone. I just passed thru the five year milestone and it is nice to "graduate" -- clear lung ex-rays and bladder is clear(cystoscopy yesterday). Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for in this family. Five years ago, it was a jittery time, for me.

Glad that all you parties went well. Thanks Lizzie for signing Stevens page, I don't think he's seen it because he's off rehearsing for his singing tour. So is Michelle. We are finally getting a little warmer weather here, has been a below normal spring, but nice for a change. Went to Hancock Fabrics yesterday and purchased material to make a lap quilt for St. Jude "Quilt of Hope". They have to be made by Aug. 4th, so I thought without the kids around I could sew and not worry about running here and there. Also taking some golf lessons, seem to be helping. Have a great trip to the south and make sure you take that sun sreeen.

Wow, you guys have alot going on. That will be us in a year when Steven graduates. Life is precious and we have all learned to enjoy the time we have. Well, it's been a little while since I've signed the book, but seems like a good time. For all who read, and those who keep the journal entries, Mary Alice was right. The Relay for Life was a hard decision, but after having done it, cannot imagine anywhere I would rather be than walking that first lap with Liz's hand in mine. In absolute truthfulness, my strength came from her - where is the logic as she is 10 and I 43. But without her and the rest of the Dorschel group, I could not have done it. Was very moving and so much love and support that you could absolutely feel. Was also special having my 16 yr. old and husband walk second lap with me, hand in hand. Sometimes we have to stretch and grow, and how often we learn those valuable lessons from a child. So glad she is loving the singing at church. She DOES have a beautiful voice, and is truly an angel here on earth. Love to you all, and to all who read, light to you.

So glad to hear all is well. Lizzie you look great! We have put together a team for our Relay for Life. It's the 20th & 21st of June, they want walkers all night. We're supposed to set up tents and have camp sites. Should be a fun night, Steven will not get to walk the survivors lap, as he will be singing and traveling with a group of teenagers. This is good, because last year he was supposed to, but of course didn't get to. Michelle is getting anxious to go see big brother out west and can't wait for school to be done. Steven is doing great and wants to go camping and fishing this weekend. Hope Julia has fun at her last prom and you have a great time celebrating her graduation. Love and miss you all.

So, today's message is this: While recouperating from my own surgery, my bright spot has been Liz popping over most days to just say hi and see how things are going. She has sometimes come in POURING rain. She is very sensitive to if I hurt or am sore, and of course, the best medicine of all was MA and Lizzie coming to see me in the hospital. Hi All. Figured someone had a game today as had not seen my favorite 10 year old. The Praise and Worship Music is also new territory in our church, but brought about slowly, seems to be catching on. We started it on Sunday nights and was so popular that little by little, it has been introduced during worship; however very slowly. I have noticed when I play it in the car and Lizzie is with me, or when I have a cd on at home, she knows the words and sings along. Sometimes we sing together. She has a beautiful voice - I always tell her that. Yesterday she just started singing in front of Kevin, his friends, and me. It was amazing. She was so uninhibited. The sleep over sounds great and I am constantly encouraged that the 10 year old things are coming around - that is so important. Love to each and every one of you.

Lizzie, MA & Jay. Okay, it's 2:30 a.m. and so where am I? Right here on your web site thinking of you and anxious to hear how the scans/tests are going. As I've said so many times, you are never far from my thoughts. I was laying in bed unable to sleep just praying that tomorrow would be a huge relief for you and had to get up and write. Someone shared this with me on the eve of my surgery, and I thought it was something I would often continue to share with others as it left the most peaceful feeling over me: I can just see God's Angels flying over Lizzie as those scans are being done, healing her in body, and both of you in mind and spirit. Julia and Matt came tonight with my little gym shorts as my "get well" present, and I was thrilled. Your family is simply amazing. They sat down and had a nice visit and Julia promised to call once she heard from you (unless that is Lizzie calls from her cell phone first). Love to you all, and I am so anxious for your return.

So, "ma", is that for Mary Alice, or the wonderful southern "ma" that I know you are...it is raining like crazy and I am up in the middle of the night. My, my, does God weave incredible tapestries into our lives. I have decided I need to write a book because of the tapestry HE is weaving in my life with the fellowship of fellow brain surgery and brain injury survivors he has brought into my life. My name is Brent Williams and my sister is Kimberly Vail,whose daughter goes to ChristChurch with your son. As you may know or may find out, my sister has a tumor on her brainstem that Dr. Weingart at Johns Hopkins operated on in 1999. He could not remove it completely because of the delicate location and the unexpected involvement of critical arteries. Her saga started in 1999 when my son was diagnosed and underwent neurosurgery for a chiari malformation secondary to the difficulties he experienced at birth. They were both operated on in the same year. Marshall, was born with an intracranial hemorrhage into the left hemisphere of the brain in 1995. We too had many problems with many different doctors in this area and we even live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area! It wasn't until Marshall was 6 months old, and I said to my Pediatrician who was completely zipper lipped (because there was such poor perinatal care), "What would YOU do if this was YOUR child? His response was "Take him to John's Hopkins." I called up to the Director of Neurology, told my long and draw out story about IVH, ICU, shunts, etc. and asked him who the best person was for us to see. He recommended Rebecca Ichord,Pediatric Neurologist who specialized in neonatal care. We went to her with the intention of getting a second opinion but she turned out to be the best doctor we have ever had, with the exception of Dr. Benjamin Carson, who is Marshall's neurosurgeon. He was not taking any new patients at that time but with Dr. Ichord's referral we got in to see him. Marshall has had a total of 16 neurosurgeries in is brief 8 years. Needless to say the whole family is shell shocked, I believe the technical word for it would be post traumatic stress syndrome. Your web page reads like you can clearly understand the stresses of advocating for your child in the medical establishment. The saga continues for us as well as Marshall continues to grow and the dynamics of his diagnoses and side effects of the neurosurgeries present themselves. I call it an incredible Odessey that God is taking us on. People say, how are you, my answer is "It's a journey." Anyway, on a very positive note, God is with us and has made his presence known to us even a year before Marshall was born by bringing numerous people with brain tumors into my life; so many that I got down on my knees and prayed "God, what is it about the brain you are trying to tell me?" When Marshall was three weeks old and almost died in the Emergency Room and they came out to tell me that Marshall had had a hemorrhage at birth, I was blown away and at that moment surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and felt held in his arms throughout our month long stay in the ICU with Marshall. Marshall, like Lizzie, is an absolute joy and blessing to us and God is teaching us so many things through this journey that I Never would have learned had I not been on it. I look forward to the rest of the journey and to writing about it some day. I am in awe that my sister showed me this page and that God continues to send people into our lives. I am in awe. There is a plan and HE wants to teach us about the brain. Incredible. I hope to hear from you and connect with you. Lizzie: Today reminded me of just how we started our friendship (I guess it would have been 2 years ago). Dear ones... I cannot believe that it has been so long since I posted here...I think of you all the time. My 1st memory of lizzie.
She is the first one in your family I met. I'm not sure who initiated the conversation. I remember her "skeptic" expression when questioning if Steven was going to eat "all that". but most vividly I remember the Knock Knock jokes. When I really needed to laugh. The best one has to be the "Impatient Cow". Her spirit lifted all of ours. I remember telling Justin he had to meet lizzie. And that he wasn't disappointed. As she had the same impact on him and "bootsie" . I still don't know where that came from. But it stuck. Thanks Lizzie. You brought some sunshine to us. When often all I could see were clouds.

Becca's journal entry was great. It was like being there when she described Lizzie taking her hand, and that tiny little voice of Liz's that just makes me melt. One of my most vivid memories was the morning I had to tell Lizzie good-bye as she was leaving for St. Jude. She was so brave and didn't cry at all as I hugged her - Becca watched from the sidelines, wiping tears, and I cried and clung to her like a lifeline, and she was just so brave. In her little teeny voice she promised to be strong. And she's been giving us all lessons in strength for so long. What an amazing little girl!

Lizzie,
So glad you are home and the tests were great! I had a feeling they would be but it's always nice to get it from the experts. For everyone who reads this and needs inspiration you will find it with Lizzie. From the moment we found out about Lizzie's tumor we could not be anything but inspired by her positive attitude. I will always be in awe of how she and her family have handled this experience for lack of a better word. I pray daily for Lizzie and all others that as yet have not received such great news, but I know Lizzie will do great things with her life. She is special and we are all better people for knowing her.
