Hey Carolyn, I enjoy reading your updates! It's great to see you raising much needed money for research. I can't wait for the day that no more children lose their lives to the nasty disease. I hope and pray you continue to live a healthy and happy life free of NB!

Hey Carolyn -

Last time I visited this page you were still a baby. I think it was in early 2004. I was buying something on ebay today and was prompted to donate to St. Judes Research Hospital for Children. I remembered your case and so I went ahead and donated. I wanted to see how you were doing so I went in search of this guest page. It was a great relief to read that you are ok and are doing well. God Bless you sweetie!

Jen,

Hmm... let's see, no first day of school photos... Fairfax must be on a different schedule... no way you could fall into that bad mom category...

btw, I posted my picture on fb (I had to work that morning, so I did the best I could ;)

Good luck with the school this year.

Hi Jen and Carolyn
Thank you so much for the comments in Tylers Guestbook. Yes, we love SLO county. My husband and I both work in SLO (well, I used to but I don't work right now) and my mother lives in Cambria. She runs a B&B out of her home so if you ever go back, please let me know. You must visit Hearst Beach, one of our favorites too!! If you haven't had the chance, Avila Beach is beautiful too--but usually is busier!!
I am so happy to read your daughters page and see how well she is doing. Your posts on ACOR are always so informative and helpful, thank you for that!!

Take care and do email me or call me if you're ever in the area. Also, we should still be there around Sept 3. Tyler is having surgery on August 24 and should be getting out of the hospital by then. We would love to see you. Will you be staying at the Ronald?

Take care and thanks again for writing,

Hi, I am the grandmother of a child, Katie, who is three and a half, who was dx May 14 this year with NB stage IV. I saw your site link in a post on the NBlist and I always want to talk to parents of children who have stayed NED for a long time. Sounds like your daughter is still doing well, and I read her speech and it was awesome. My grandbaby is going to undergo surgery on Mon. July 6, the chemo shrunk her main tumor on her renal gland by 75%! We are excited. She has done very well with ther first two rounds of chemo wiht good counts and only one episode of a reaction to Chemo where she almost got dehydrated, but that is all. She even still has her hair. So we were worried that the chemo was not doing its job, but seems as if it has. They say our Katies surgery will take 13 to 20 hours. THis is frightening. However we have trusted our Lord and savior this far and he has brought her through so we know he will continue to do so. I just wanted to get your take on the TX plan for Katie as much as I know it anyway. After surgery, she will recover for at least a week and then the third round of chemo will start. This will be a three day hard chemo as I understand it. Then I think one more round and then stem cell harvest if her counts are right. Then stem cell rescue I think which all of this sounds really dangerous to me. I am not in there to hear what the doc says.I hear it second hand from my daughter so I may not have it all right. I am not sure if she will get the antibody tx but I sure hope so because I hear really good things about that for keeping them cancer free. ANY thoughts that you might have would be much appreciated. my email is vickiej57@netzero.com but I guess you can see that below. Thanks for any help you can be. Vickie Riley

It was so good to hear from you - thank you so much for the encouragement. I was just wondering 2 years ago your daughter was diagnosed....which treatment did you do? We have a choice at this point of treatment A - which is just regular (chemo, surgery, stem cell transplant, radiation, etc.), but the treatment B has you doing chemo 2 times and stem cell transplant 2 times? We know that Carter has done A and it has come back...just have to make a really hard decision on which is the best way to go about this. I was just curious what you did/your comments. We are thinking of you and thank you again for your encouraging story. Always nice to hear POSITIVE THINGS. Again thank you and you will be in our prayers as well. AMY

Hi Jen,

I am a friend of Ryan Connolly's parents. For being so young, you are truly an inspiration to both young and old (me). I cannot phantom what life has been like for you but from reading your words and your look to the future is a blessing to me. You are so uplifting and enthusiastic. Thank you for lifting me.
May God continue to bless you in your daily walk.

Thank you for sharing Jen and awesome speech Carolyn. You are an inspiring little gal who is amazingly smart and "optomistic". What a great job you did. It almost brought tears to my eyes the way you tell your story of your past and your treatment for cancer.

Your story of Ryan and you recognizing his struggle and comparing it to your own battle, well what can I say? More amazing!

You go girl. You are a winner. You are beating the odds and you will BE ON Fred's team. I love your life goals, they are so realistic and have a purpose. A purpose, to help others who are where you have been. You are going to grow up to be one fine lady with a heart of gold.

Congrats!!

HI Carolyn!

I saw your mom's post on the list serv and quickly went to your site to read you speech - wow! My Alex has NB, he has had it for over three years, we live in Texas... I am on a trip to California right now... the snow is wet, I think I will go discover vs. ski... Do you know how to Ski... you are so sporty you might like it. Alex loves to ski, and often notes how great God is - "He creates such beautiful things", he says. So despite this "thing" called cancer we stand united in optimism that indeed tomorrow will be a better day... thank you for posting... you made my day!

My daughter, Destiny, is now a 18 year survivor - she is 21! Wow - she's getting old, huh? She is a very little person, so she doesn't look 21, but I can't wait until YOU celebrate 18 years too -- I love your American Girl doll - Des had (has) one when she was her age... took it everywhere she went! Hi,

I am the Dad of AJ, a 14 year old cancer victim. I wanted to make you aware (maybe again) and enlist your help for the Cure Childhood Cancer petition! The GREAT news is that CureSearch, LIVESTRONG and Alex’s Lemonade Stands have ALL written about the Petition on their websites! And TX Children’s and DUKE have both allowed us to setup paper versions inside the hospitals! WE ARE MAKING HEADWAY and are at over 11,000 signatures! But we need your help again. If you can please make your readers aware, email it around again, and give just a little publicity, I think we can make this happen!

Thanks again,
AJs Dad

You certianly do like to keep life interesting now don't you? Oh it sounds like a mess with the house. keep your positive attitude. I do not know if I could think that way like you.

As for the casts, that is wonderful news that things healed so fast and so well. Our children are little fighters.

Sounds like the NYC was very nice and a big success. That is fantastic.

God bless and take care.

It is so wonderful to hear your story. My son Salvatore is 5 years old. On Sept 10, 2007 he was diagnosed with NB stage IV. He has been through 8 cycles of chemotherapy and 2 surgeries, all at MSKCC. He is currently receiving the 3f8 antibody therapy. He has not yet reached NED but your story has given me hope and strength to deal with his disease. As you know there are not many stories like yours. I am so happy for all of you. GOD bless you & keep you in his care always.

Carolyn,

It was good to see you at the play.
Not sure if you have heard but that was the night Allison ended up breaking her ankle! She was in a cast for almost 4 weeks. A nice purple/pink colored one. She is now in a walking boot till the end of the month. The cast didn't bother her. It just meant lots of pampering to her: mommy giving her her showers, mommy carrying her things for her or her friends and much more.
So be sure to tell them what color you want on your feet and enjoy the pampering afterwards :o)

Hi. thank you for the inspiration you have given me. My baby girl(2Yr+) has just been diagnosed NB. They classified her as stage 3 cos hers is big mass about 9x8 crossing the midline and into her spinal cord. We were so lost now. Every day seems so dragy. So far no sight of amplification when they did a biop. Can we keep in touch thru email? My email add is patchialim@hotmail.com. They will be giving her 3 to 4 chemo follow by surgery and 3 to 4 chemo. On N7 protocol. I'm so afraid of losing her. What is the maximum years they can live till?

Wow you were not kidding when you said how much trouble you were having. It is a darn shame that kids have to deal with things like that. It breaks my heart to hear the things the school did to her. I do not know why the school system is what it is and does what it does. We had an easy time of it once the problem was identified. But I can sympathize with you, in the fact that, Jared's teacher use to make him miss part of his second recess to finish his work because he was behind the other kids. Once I told them I did not want to see that happen again and that there are other solutions vs. taking a first graders recess, it has been resolved. Now I see what you meant by telling me that you were glad our district was willing to work for Jared. It is a darn shame that our kids go through NB treatment and then have to deal with people like this in society, that are suppose to be the "educated" ones who are educating others. I am so glad you found a school that meets her needs and provides the services you want. You are an awesome mom to fight for your child without giving up. Some people would have given up when faced with all that challenge. Not you, you fought harder and tougher till you met your daughters needs. Way to go mom!!! You deserve a big pat on the back. If I ever need help, I will ask you. You are a mentor to all us parents dealing with long term effects, be it, hearing or learning. I am proud of you and your insistance for your daughter. Give that girl a big hug for me and tell her I said she is lucky to have a mom like you, because she is. May school bcome easier for you all. God bless and take care.

CONGRATS are in order. I am so happy to hear you join the numbers of children not only surviving this nasty beast but no longer even looking for it! It IS a WONDERFUL feeling isn't it??? Payton hit her 6 year anniversary this summer and I FINALLY gave up the urine test. They have been pushing me to forever but I thought "I needed it" to bring me comfort. But as time passes I realize that not looking for it anymore brings me all the comfort I need! Congrats!!! I am SO happy for you. And thanks for posting the picture, I would have gotten you back if you hadn't! :) Gin
Oh, and AMEN on the whole description of school thing and just being thankful...I am truley thankful for every moment I get with them as like you I know how close I came to loosing it. She is a AmStaf/Boxer mix, housebroken, and she walks very nice on her leash. Even Victor enjoys her! It's kind of nice having a dog in the house again. : )

We're all going to have to get together with Pat and Linda once they get settled...I even think Kiela will get along with Yoda! hehehee!

Jen and Carolyn,
I hope things are going great there. The 70 degree weather last week was wonderful, so this cold front is a shocker. Still, Erin's doing great, so all is good. Spring is coming soon I'm sure. I'd love to see you guys again sometime.
Amelia was also told that she doesn't need scans anymore. What a wonderful thing to hear!
Take care!
Melinda

Jennifer, thanks so much for sending Joey Thompson's parents an email with some very helpful hints on his stomach issues - we talked to his Omaha Dr. today, and hope we can utilize your suggestions!!! Joey starts round 4 of GMCSF-3F8 (5day) 26 Feb at Sloan, and then three month scans the following week. Holding off on the 1st round of Accutane until he has another GI scope next Friday, 16 Feb. Did Carolyn have stomach or esophogus issues with the Accutane? So glad to hear that your Carolyn is doing so very well - she gives all the NB stage 4 families hope!!! Thanks again for thinking of Joey! Hugs! Grandma Dawn :)

So glad to hear the scans went well and you are scan free now. But I also understand the fear of no more scans. Just think positive and take it a day at a time. You are a great role model to us. You give us all such positive thoughts and hopes. Thinking of you. I would love to talk to you sometime about the reading thing. Jared is doing well in school but he has to work very hard and has trouble with putting letter sounds together to pronounce words. He knows individual sounds but the reading thing is something we have been working at very hard but the success is short term and has to be constantly revisited to try to maintain it. It is difficult for him. Any advice would be appreciated. Take care and keep on thinking positive.

Congratulations on your path to normalcy. No scans is a huge milestone. We're so happy for all of you. We know it's been a long and difficult battle, but you fought it with grace and courage. We thought we were done with scans, but our regular onc said we have to go back in April. She did, however, add "nothing to worry about." We'll keep striving to be where you are.

Lots of hugs!

Wow, no scans! That's wonderful. You must be so excited. Carolyn is a huge inspiration to all of us, and even though you deal with the late effects of chemo, it's wonderful seeing her and knowing there is a future. I'm so happy for you. Hi! This is Danielle Ryan's Mom. Jenny did post some info on the nb site for me. My sons tumor is located in the skull bone which is pressing against the frontal lobe. My Dr. doesn't care for Sloan Kettering because she doesn't see long term results that are good. I don't know. Plus other people have talked to me about how they don't have a very good bed side manor. I don't know what to do. The chemo isn't working and now we are talking radiation. He is 16 months old and he was considered a low risk pt. but for some reason the tumor in his skull is not acting textbook neuroblastoma. We have a web site here too under Ryanmccormick. Feel free to give me your opinion on this matter.
