My Shannon seems to have more pain when she eats too much sodium and potassium foods. Acupuncture from her herbalist truly helps w/ her chemo damage cramping episodes. Hope this info helps.

Hi Baylie and Tressie:

So cool you got to be on the radio! I mailed you a bunch of bracelets on Tuesday (I think about 260). So watch for them in your mail, OK? I'm glad to hear about the orders you have coming in.

We finally got to see a local neurosurgeon in the Twin Cities who will help us with testing and in case of an emergency. He said their practice will soon be getting a device that will be able to "talk" to a Codman shunt, in order to learn the shunt setting. So no need for x-rays soon, he said. And it will work on Anna's shunt.

He also said even if the shunt setting is right, and the pressure is good, that still is no guarantee the shunt is actually working. So where does that leave us????

Baylie, I hope your pain decreases. We are all in the same boat, it seems. A working shunt, but WAY too much pain.

Dear Baylie, I heard your story this morning on US 99.5 while I was on my way down to Children's for my 6 year old daughter's follow up visit. She too had a Chairi Malformation and had her surgery on December 18th. She is doing very well and as we were listening to you and your story she said to me, "Mom she had the same thing that I did." I spent the last hour on your website reading about your illness and the struggles that you and your friends continue to go through. You sound like a very strong person. I know its ahrd and one can never understand why anyone should have to endure the pain and not knowing what;s next. Know that this is just as difficult for your parents and friends to see yu suffer. I had my first dealings witha deadly disease last year with my best friend who was suffering from breast and lung cancer. Every emotion goes through you, I think I took it worse than she did. SHe was incredible and so are you. God doesn't give you anything you cant handle. Keep smilin and keep up th positive attitute, kiss your mom and let her know she'll get through this as well. I am a student at East Carolina University in North Carolina. I am involved in a sorority and my "big sister" gave me your bracelet's for a sisterhood present. You have been such an inspiration, I wear them everyday and pray for you. I am originally from Raleigh and I have a younger brother who in his freshmen year of high school was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia. He was treated at Duke University and although as of now he will never be considered "cured", he has been cancer free for two years now. He is currently a freshmen and North Carolina State University and is such a living inspiration. After fighting cancer as a family I have felt led to go into Child Life studies. You may have a Child Life specialist working with you. I think you children are such a blessing and I would love to be able to work with you all as my job. You are on my mind and not a day goes by that I don't wonder how you are doing. Stay strong and I will give you a bible verse that carried my brother to where he is today. Joshua 1:9. Dear Baylie: I saw your picture in Positive Thinking magazine and had to have one of your t-shirts. I had brain surgery in April 2005 (not for Chiari) and I wish I had had one of your t-shirts when I ran a marathon 15 months later. I could have written your post both as a mom and as a patient with chiari! It hurts so much to see your child hurt doesn't it? For me, it has been by far the most excruciating pain I've been through, far and above the surgeries I have endured! Bless Baylie's sweet heart wondering if Jesus loves her. i was telling my mom about this last entry & it just brokeher heart. I dont remember if i told you about this-ok, so i have had shunts as well, but they always got clogged so we arent doing that anymore-however, there is a new shunt out-a lumbar shunt. it is supposed to work a lot better than a normal shunt. since you are faithful to dr. frim, ask him about it. i was actually going to get that done when we found out another problem. anyway, i hope that info helps.

ps-my dad likes to get me & my bro presents for xmas just from him. so he asked me a couple weeks ago what i wanted & i told him about the site & how i wanted the t-shirt, candles & the new car magnet. yesterday i went to walk my dog & apparently UPS came & dropped off a box that said candlecharities & it was addressed for my dad. (i knew what it was since i ordered some earlier in the month to give to my aunt!) and then in the mail was a soft package from baylie owen-i just laughed so hard bc i knew what it was! he had a good chuckle over it too. so, i want to thank you for all of this. eventhough my dad bought it for me, i am thankful that through all of this you & baylie are raising money for chiari. :)

i pray baylie's wish comes true too-not just for me but for everyone like her & me & for the families that have to watch us be in so much pain.
i have friends that say the same thing that people say to you when you tell them she is having another surgery. they dont understand. they want to but they dont want us to be in pain & it is just hard for them to know there is another surgery to recover from. i love them for sticking by me when all the others left.
anyway, tressie, you are in my prayers as is baylie. but i am praying that God gives you strenth to get through this bc i know you are tired & drained from all of this. it is hard to watch your child go through something like this but she is an amazing child. where most kids ask for toys & new playstations, she asks for all her friends to be healed. what an amazing kid. you have done a great job with her despite all the pain she is in. i just wanted to tell you that. you deserve a pat on the back, a hug, and everything else! baylie must get all her goodness from her mom. :)

Baylie, I want you to know that the courage and strength you have in you for yourself and all of your friends is very inspiring. If I could be granted one wish, it would be for all of us who suffer from this/these problems to be cured. Your mom is right, no one should have to go thru this. My headaches have come back and are not letting up. It used to be I would have them at least a couple of days a week, now they don't stop. I am having trouble working. I have set up an appointment with a local neurologist, because I don't have the money to travel to see a good one, and hope that there is something to ease it. Unfortunatly I am finding that there is no cure, no easy fix. I don't know whether I hope they find a reason, or they don't. I don't want to hurt any more either. And honestly, I cry alot too. It is hard to hurt all the time and even harder to watch your family and friends worry and cry over you. They want so much to help and take the pain.
Know that I pray for you and for all of us that God will have the ability to at least ease the pain and troubles that we have.
One thing that my mother has always said is that God doesn't give you anything you can't handle. For some reason, God believes we can, and maybe with our pains and struggles, and trying to find a cure, it will help future people from suffering.
To me, as I have grown older, believe that is more important. I will carry my cross, if that means that others do not have to. My thoughts are with you.

My daughter also has pseudotumor cerebri and she has had 20 LP shunt surgery 1 VP shunt, 1 optic nerve decompression, and bilertal subtemporal decompression. And finally after 5 1/2 years she doesn't have a headache. I don't know how you girls handle all that you go through but I amire you all very much. Hi all, I am a 27 year old woman and I know what you are going through. I have PTC and have been struggling for 10 years. Right now I have bad headaches every day and my vision is so poor I am not driving. My memory is getting worse and I am having trouble finding the words I want to say or write. The Dr's say my shunt is fine and my pressure is normal, but why am I still having all these problems. It seems so hopeless right now cause I got fired from my job and now have no insurance to pay for medical bills. I have an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic on 12/19/06 to see a Neurosurgeon I found on the IHR website, I just pray that he believes me and can help me even though I can't make a full down payment for the services. I will be praying for all of you as well. No child should have to go through this, I just hope that our pain will help others in the future, and there will be a cure. If anyone else has been told thier shunt was fine and still had problems please e-mail me and let me know what happened. Take care everyone.

I have to agree with Shannon. I know Baylie is going thru alot, I've been there. It makes my heart break to know how much pain she is in. It is hard to KNOW what she is dealing with and standing back and hearing about all the surgeries. I will also suggest another alternative. I saw a doctor here in Kankakee with a group that you are probably familiar with, if not working with presently or in the past. The doctor's name is Dr. Sean O'Malley. He worked with CINN. He has since moved to Alabama. He has saved my life, given me hope to be able to tread thru day to day living in pain. I have told every family member that if something happens Arnold Chiari related and I am not able to give my own opinion for some reason, I want them to get in touch with him. No one here is to come any where near me. I have had problem after problem here locally. I keep up with his location in case I ever need anything. If you want ANY more information on him or CINN, I would be more than willing to give any information I can. Baylie, and all of the other people with Arnold Chiari, do not deserve to live day in and day out in pain. At least the headaches should be 'handleable'.

i dont know all the procedures that baylie has had done. i know she has had many shunt & shunt replacement surgeries. the reason i am kinda asking is bc maybe it is time to see another doctor that wont keep just replacing the shunts. i go to the chiari institute in NY-which i know is far for you, but they they do alot more than shunts. i trust them w. my life, which i am sure you feel for your doc as well. just thought i'd mention it. i hate to see her keep going through this & getting shunts when who knows she might only need 1 more hard surgery but that would be it. ya never know.
she is always in my thoughts! i hope your surgery went well. you are in my prayers.
i just want to say 1 more thing. i found out about baylie last year like so many people in people magazine. i told my mom about the bracelets & she ordered 4 for me & for her-one said chiari one said hope-2 of each. i wear them all the time. but tonight i ordered 3 candles to give to my aunt for xmas. :) and i am hoping to order a t-shirt for myself & maybe even some of the magnets for ppl someday also! i am so proud of all the work you all do for our chiari. i seriously love you for it! :)

Hi Baylie. We are really, really proud of you and have been spreading the word about your bracelets and candles. My daughter Megan (age 7) has had 2 surgeries in the last 6 months for Chiari and S/M at Johns Hopkins with Dr. Ben Carson (we live in Baltimore,MD). The first decompression surgery went well but her S/M got bigger which was not supposed to happen. Hopefully her 2nd surgery fixed her problem (she had significant scar tissue which was still impeding the CSF flow). Fortunately Megan has not had significant pain but it's only a matter of time if they can't stop the CSF from going down her spinal chord. Megan and I have been following your journey and are very impressed with all you have accomplished. We are anxiously awaiting the surprise on your website. We will continue to be in your corner as well as everyone else with Chiari and related issues. Keep up the good work!

Hey Baylie...that's awesome that you're having fun again! Drew had a rough past year (9 surgeries in 9 months), but he's feeling pretty good right now. Still the niggly Chiari cough and occasional headache and the nerve damage stuff, but he's feeling and acting like a regular little boy (bike crashes and all). His birthday is today...turning 11 years old. How the time flies. We gotta enjoy this good stretch we're on for as long as it lasts. You never know what tomorrow holds, but even when it's rough it always gets better. :)

I am so sorry Baylie isn't feeling well at all. I can relate so much with Daniel having ACM I and hydrosyringemyelia. Colds are the worst for him. He is over his now, but his neck still hurts. Not shunt yet....watching and waiting for the syrinx to decrease, which is slowly. Another MRI in December, but might have to return to the headaches in the back of his head/neck.

I will pray for pain relief and for healing.

i have to say that even as adults we sometimes dont want to remove ourselves from situations bc we are tired of not going places bc we are in pain-i am tired of it. i have lost too many friends bc of this chiari! so i have a tendency to go out despite my pain...put on a happy face when inside i am screaming in pain. its not fair that any of us have to do that. and we cant lose our tempers w/ ppl bc as an adult it is not socially acceptable to be in pain apparently.
i totally agree with everything you said. but it doesnt change when you are teens or adults. no matter what, you want to be accepted & feel included. and so we push our pain aside & pay for it later.
i always say i hope baylie feels better but i know there is no cure-just treatment. and the treatments dont always work! i am waiting for a lumbar shunt to be approved by the fda-which can take years. until then i live w/ my parents, cant finish college or have a job. i am 25 and all my friends have careers now, finished college, getting married, having kids...and then there is me. who cant do any of that. forget relationships! no one gets what i go through...its a sad life. i just pray that they come out w/ more things for all the younger ppl so they dont have to deal with life like this when they are older.
baylie is amazing though. to go to school & all the activities she does. i just wish i could too.

I so see where you are coming from. Kacey just missed over two weeks of school and will be getting another spinal tap this week. she is telling me she wants one who in this world would believe a child would ask for something that is painful. I was just at school yesterday having a meeting and trying to get some of the teachers to get it. It is so hard for them but like you and Baylie, I see Kacey continue to be stronger than ever and never giving up. Somedays I don't know how these kids do it but they are stronger than anyone can imagine. I always tell Kacey she is a better person because all she has been dealt with and continues to keep her faith and just keep going. Not to say we don't have incredibly bad days because we have had more than we would like to remember. But this situation puts things in perspective. No one can imagine what it's like unless they have been in a situation like we all are with these diseases. One way I put it to the school is I know this situation is tough on everyone around us but one thing I know is it's the hardest for Kacey and she does a wondeful job handling it all. Anyway I read your post and it hit home with me and the past week we have had. When Kacey feels good even if it's only for a week we appreciate it so much it seems like 3-4 weeks of time. I sure hope Baylie gets up tomorrow and has a much better day.
Thank you Baylie for helping all us out here suffering. All the hard work you are doing will help so many people.

i to have ran a race and came in dead last. but i took the ribbon and went home. i did feel my confidence drop down 20 points but i stood tall and acted like i won instead of lost. it takes a strong person to even finish a race and i can't think of any other 7 year old who ran a race for her friends in the hospital. thats really great.

When reading about your leg pain and hot baths I realized why my son begs to take a HOT HOT shower everyday...sometimes twice a day. Matthew hardly ever complains about pain but now I understand that he gets relief from a hot shower. I never connected it to chiari. I always thought he wanted to be the cleanest kid in town. Thank you for your words. That meant a lot to us.

We are sending you a box of bracelets on Monday.

Look up "Infra-red Sauna Dome" on the internet. One doctor thought it would be very helpful to Anna. I just don't know if getting overheated like that would be good for pressure though. I sure would love one this winter for myself!

I don't really get it. This summer Anna had to be freezing cold with the air conditioning way down (she kept saying she was too hot). Now she has flip-flopped, and she is cold and uncomfortable with her fingers turning white (Raynaud's).

I am glad you are at home. You entioned Baylie likes to soak in a hot tub. Try either epsion(sp/) salts or at walmart they have in the bath section this company that makes bath salts for cold and sinus, aches and pains. they come in clear containers and are like either yellow or green. it helps me alot when my legs act up.

Hey Baylie and Tressie! Glad to hear you are home and back in school. Riley is also having foot pain...he keeps holding his foot up saying owie so I guess it's tingling or something. Wish he coudl talk and tell us!

Something else that may help Baylie is those, Herb filled packs that you can heat up in the microwaive, you can usually get at a keosk in the mall. I just got one off QVC that is 5 feet long if can be heated in the microwave or chilled in the fridge. At least it's cheaper than a hot tub and she could maybe use it in school? It is supposed to stay hot/warm for 20 minutes or so. This on I got is big enough for riley to lay on like a blanket. I bet Baylie would fit on it...I'll try it on Alex to see if he fits!

PS...got to tour the new ER (supposed to be open Dec 1st. All private rooms with TV...beautiful just like comer and HUGE!!! They will also be using Nitrous Oxide for doing IV's...SHUNT TAPS...procedures that may be painful. The kids just breathe it in go to sleep and wake with the procedure being done! Can I say YEA!!!!! This will be great!

Kat and I are sooooo sorry you are STILL flat on your back. There's a limit to the number of times you can watch those movies! I just know the leak is going to seal itself off and you will be up and about, with a PERFECT 'stinky' shunt in no time. And come on, Tressie, I think you should let Baylie's shirt say "shunts suck' too--I mean, that's what they do, sorta. Vacuum cleaners suck up dirt, shunts suck up extra CSF. It seems so magical that we can send messages to you via cyberspace in an instant.

We are sorry to hear about all the pain you are having, Baylie.

Anna can sure relate to the leg pain you have been living with. After walking around a lot at our State Fair on Saturday (because her head felt good), she couldn't even walk on Sunday because of very severe leg and lower back pain. We really don't know what is going on. She's on steroids (which she hates), and if she's not better by next week she will have an MRI and go from there.

It's like one giant puzzle all the things that can go wrong with Chiari, PTC, and the shunt. And we're pretty far from Dr. Frim for him to help us.

So it's a struggle here, and we think and say, "It's always something!"

We hope and pray Dr. Frim will be able to come up with some answers to help you in days ahead.

You have so many people who love and care for you, Baylie.

Our little Chiari friend Abi in Minnesota had shunt surgery on Tuesday. She's been on steroids also, and she has such plump little cheeks right now. Her doctor is trying to find answers for her also because she's pretty complicated.

Hi Tressie and Baylie:

We certainly are thinking about you this morning as you head into surgery. Maybe this will be the LAST surgery in a very long time (hopefully forever)! Wouldn't it be great if this was the last one?

The good news was to hear your shunt is working. Yippee! Anna's shunt has been the very best treatment for her in six and a half long years. So we have to say we love her shunt. It's not perfect, but things are way better for her with the shunt.

So we hope and pray for the same for you, dear Baylie.

I'll be odering some candles and giving them to special people in our lives who help us in this struggle (including Anna's local doctor and his nurse). They have learned a lot about Chiari from helping Anna.

Baylie, when you read this we hope you leg pain is totally gone.
