As I processed the events of the past two weeks, I struggled with what and how to write about the services honoring Lana. There was such an ache in my body, at times overwhelming sadness and tears, especially when I looked at Mike, Curtis and Patrick. But thoughts of joy, hope and belief kept beating in my heart, helping to soothe those raw feelings. There was also much goodness, laughter, sharing, feelings of community and family, surrounding everyone as we walked together through those days in Memphis. I’m sure it would seem strange to an outsider to hear me say I spent four of the best days of my life in Memphis....at a funeral....of a long-time, dear friend. I didn’t want to be in Memphis, but I wouldn’t have been anywhere else.

I know you won’t be surprised when I tell you that Lana’s Memphis visitation and celebration service (funeral sounds so somber) were anything but plain and normal. I left Memphis feeling encouraged, refreshed, connected and loved.

Lana’s visitation was Tuesday, July 4th. It was scheduled from 6:00 – 8:00pm, but it was after 9:00 when the crowd finally dissipated. As best we could tell, there were at least 300 people in attendance, on a holiday evening no less. Lana was beautifully laid out in a bright Chico’s outfit and, of course, was wearing her Go Girl ring. She also had on some of the jewelry she loved which Michael had given her. A tiny Beanie Baby white dog was with her, representing her precious Sparky. The room was a large chapel with a center aisle, which had a constant line of friends waiting to talk to the family and view Lana. One man told Brenda he stood in line for 90 minutes. The pews stayed full most of the evening as people visited.

Surrounding Lana were approximately 20 flower arrangements, sprays and plants. Lots of bright, pretty spring and summer flowers. Some of Lana’s friends – Jan Mars, Cathy Moore, Gay Robinson, Paula Wolfe Hamrick – spent hours gathering and copying pictures, placing them on posters to be viewed. (Sorry if I left your name out of this group, this is what I can remember right now.) Some of the posters had pink netting on them or pink backgrounds. Pictures were also placed in frames and set on tables decorated with feather boas, tiaras, fans, pictures albums and Lana’s birthday scrapbook. A large wooden “LAUGH” from the mantel at home was also included.

It was an evening of seeing old friends and meeting new ones, talking and hugging, searching for Kleenex, laughing and crying. Friends from church, from Cordova schools, from sports, from FedEx passed through. There were lots of Curtis’ and Patrick’s friends. LOTS. They stayed for most of the visitation, calmly visiting or just sitting and quietly being supportive like Job’s friends.

When the evening ended, those of us who were left gathered in a circle, prayed and sang “Amazing Grace”. Then we walked outside to fireworks filling the sky with brilliant colors. We figured Lana would think we did that for her.

Lana’s celebration service was Wednesday, July 5th at 2:00pm at Great Oaks Church of Christ. The building has a large foyer area and all of the pictures, posters, boas, tiaras, scrapbook, etc., had been moved to the foyer. But what really caught your attention when you stepped through the front doors was the CaringBridge guestbook display. The entire guestbook had been printed out (248 pages) and attached to purple and yellow butcher paper. The walls were covered, so in essence, all of you who posted in the guestbook were there with us that day. It really was overwhelming to walk in and see all the words written to Lana in the past two years; all the prayers, the jokes, the poems, the encouraging words, the good-byes. I have to send thanks to Roberta and Monica Pledge for working on that. I know others were involved, but I don’t know names, so thanks to everyone who worked on that display.

There were about 300 people at the service. When you walked into the auditorium, acapella music from the LCU Meistersinger Chorus was playing. When we (Lana, Brenda me) were in college, Alton Howard paid Meistersingers to record several tapes of songs from his new hymnal and that was the music being heard. The four speakers were Patrick Mason, Mike Mason, Neil Simpson (elder at East Shelby CofC) and Gene Polvado. Gene has the distinction of baptizing Lana at Camp Bandina, and conducting her marriage and funeral services.

Patrick spoke eloquently from the heart, sharing his writings and poetry that he has journaled for some time. It was a moving tribute to his mom. I told him afterwards that the only problem with displaying talent, intelligence and composure like that is that people start expecting that from you all the time!

Mike said he was proud to have been “Lana’s husband” for 24 years. He shared lots of Lana’s little quirks, which brought lots of laughs. She loved the house to be cold and she loved to sleep; Mike said he often thought she should be DNA tested to see if she had some grizzly in her. She didn’t like formality, she loved to laugh, she loved her friends, she loved to perform and sing anywhere and anytime, she loved being the only girl in the house, she loved her boys and all the extras that came with them. Mike asked for all the young people who had hung out at their house through the years to stand up, and our guestimates are there were at least 50-60 who stood up. That brought applause. Mike said he would come home from a trip and strangers would be sleeping on the couch, on the floor, wherever they could find a spot. He would find out that Lana had gathered more chicks under her wings while he was gone! Mike gave Louis and Evelyn a lot of credit for showing Lana how to have an open, loving home.

(PPF edit: One time a young lady selling books (Hi Christine!) knocked on the Mason front door. Next thing you know, Christine was living at the house. When I was in Memphis with Lana in June, we passed Girl Scouts having a car wash. She was sitting in the back seat like Miss Daisy while I was driving and she had me stop and roll down the window. She handed the girls money and as we drove away she said to me, “I’ve always told the boys to buy lemonade whenever they see a lemonade stand.” When I told Mike that story he smiled and said, “Yes, we’ve had some pretty expensive glasses of lemonade!”)

Mike recognized Lana’s dear friend Jan Mars, who has been close for 20 years. She was with Lana more than she was with her family in Lana’s last days and was with her when she passed. Mike also said he would be paying her hush money since she probably knew more about him than anyone needed to know!!!!

He asked us to take what we experienced with Lana and Pay It Forward. Give laughter and joy to others. Take the time to pay attention to those around you. Share your gifts. Be a light in the world around you.

Neil Simpson recounted numerous funny stories about Lana. Have any of you heard Lana sing “Blackie”? I think it’s about a dog; a catchy little tune Neil sang for us. The lyrics consist entirely of the word “Blackie”. I’m sure hearing and watching Lana sing it added a lot to the lyrics! (No offense, Neil!) He also read Lana’s obituaries - thanks to Trey McCampbell for the Corpus obit, and Dianne Papasan for the Memphis obituary.

Gene Polvado gave a sweet eulogy, talking about Lana’s life, circle of influence and where she is now. He has known her for so long and it felt comfortable to have him with us. Gene’s family has a long connection with the Thrailkill family; besides what I told you earlier about Lana, he conducted Louis’ funeral service. Hearing Gene speak reminded us of how Lana stayed connected with so many from her past.

There was also congregational singing, but for the life of me I can’t remember what the songs were. I think I was crying too much, and at times, laughing too hard to recall all the details of the service. But I do remember is that in the end, Lana’s life was celebrated and honored. It was a proper send-off for her.

The graveside service was short and sweet as the sky looked threatening. Rachel, the funeral director showing us where to park was wearing a feather boa and using a fan as a pointer! Lana’s brother, Bill Thrailkill, wanted to talk about Lana breaking his pinebox derby car and trophy when they were younger, but she fixed that by starting the rain. Everyone was invited back to the church building for a meal. I think there were probably at least 150 people who returned for that. (Thank you Great Oaks for your hospitality.) We were given one last time to share stories and laughs about Lana, to give hugs to those hitting the road to return home, to browse the pictures, albums and scrapbook, to savor those last few moments of feeling a special bond.

The Corpus Memorial was Saturday, July 15th, 2:00pm at Weber Road Church of Christ. Again, 300 seems to be the magic number in terms of attendance. Lana’s been gone from Corpus for 25 years and she’s still pulling them in! All the pictures, posters, tiaras, etc., had been transported from Memphis to Corpus (Thanks, Brenda) and were displayed in the foyer. At the front of the church were a simple, beautiful arrangement of purple flowers and a picture of Lana, taken at Louis and Evelyn’s 50th wedding anniversary in 2000.

Patrick and Mike were the first two speakers. Patrick again did a good job. Mike told us about Curtis playing his guitar and singing for his mom at the hospital, and said Curtis definitely gets his voice from Lana. He then talked about Lana’s quirks and told us about how they met, their first date, etc. He also recognized Lana’s life-long friends Trey McCampbell and Connie Ewaldt Gardner. They were all Naylor Circle kids together, and Trey was the person responsible for getting Lana involved in the musicals at Harbor Theater.

David Sanchez was the third speaker. David was one of those kids Lana brought home to Louis and Evelyn’s and he’s been one of theirs ever since. One moment of his speech really captured me. He said that at the time of Lana’s Memphis service, he was somewhere in Central (South? David, sorry I can’t remember where you said you were) America praying with a family. It was because of Lana’s laugh, smile and caring 30 years ago that David came to Christ, and now he was Paying It Forward to this family praying with him. David also talked about how open and loving the Thrailkill home had always been and how Lana learned her ways from that.

A lovely reception followed and a good number of people stayed. The Weber Road family provided cookies and punch, and Fernando and Romie Canseco brought in wonderful tres leches cake! It was comforting to be around many who had known and loved Lana her entire life, and are now being so supportive of Evelyn. I also met several of Lana’s Roy Miller HS classmates (Hi Norma!) The CaringBridge guestbook was covering the walls in the fellowship room. No less overwhelming to see it the second time. Connie had added all the posts since the Memphis service. The Corpus celebration was just as touching as the one in Memphis, and gave many more people the chance to spend some time remembering and honoring Lana, and sharing with the family.

On a personal note: It was wonderful to meet so many of you after corresponding with you by email, and sometimes phone, these past two years. Thank you for the kindnesses you showed me, the encouragement you gave me, the prayers you sent my way. It was my great pleasure and honor to be a part of your lives, and I suspect I will feel lonely in the days to come. My hope for you is that you find some joy and goodness in each day you live. Lana found it in the midst of her illness, surely we can find it in this gift called Life. By doing this, we will keep the spirit of Lana within us, and better still, pass it on to others.

A little confession: I walk in the evenings and listen to my iPod shuffle. I have a “cry” playlist. It contains songs about loss, life, love, God, friendship, the resilience of the human spirit. I’ve listened to it frequently these past months, and from time to time, I may post the lyrics to one of the songs on Lana’s site. So check back if you like and see what’s new. Keep posting in the guestbook if you feel like doing so. This site is not going anywhere for a long while. If you don’t want to wait to see what shows up, email me and I will share with you my favorite songs and how to hear them.

Here’s one of my favorites: “When I Get Where I’m Going” by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton. On Brad’s CD - TIME WELL WASTED.

When I get where I’m going
On the far side of the sky
The first thing that I’m gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly

I’m gonna land beside a lion
And run my fingers through his mane
Or I might find out what it’s like
To ride a drop of rain

Chorus:
Yeah when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I’ll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah when I get where I’m going
Don’t cry for me down here

I’m gonna walk with my granddaddy
And he’ll match me step for step
And I’ll tell him how I missed him
Every minute since he left
Then I’ll hug his neck

Chorus:
Yeah when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I’ll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah when I get where I’m going
Don’t cry for me down here

So much pain and so much darkness
In this world we stumble through
All these questions I can’t answer
So much work to do

But when I get where I’m going
And I see my Maker’s face
I’ll stand forever in the light
Of His Amazing Grace

Chorus:
Yeah when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I’ll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah when I get where I’m going
Don’t cry for me down here

You will long be in my heart.
Through His Love,
Paula Paula Paula

My Dear Friends,

When Lana asked me to be the caretaker of this website, almost two years ago, I was so honored and priviledged to be doing "something to help." I often told her, though, that I wanted to be fired from this job someday when she got well.

Well, I have lost my job today. I am so sorry to tell you that Lana passed away this morning at 9:30am. Mike and I had a brief phone call just a few moments ago. He said she fought hard.

I will, of course, be in frequent contact with you as I know plans for the service.

Just before I received the call from Mike, I was in a Bible study about Job. A verse hit so strongly and I was going to use it in today's update, and I think it will speak to you now. When Job was hit with adversity, the Bible says, "...when they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was." (Job 2:12-13)

These friends didn't have to be busy doing something, they were "doing something" by grieving with Job. No matter where you are this morning, you are sitting silently with Mike, Lana, Curtis, Patrick, Evelyn, Mike's parents, Bill and Charlotte.

Pleae leave a message in the guestbook. I will make sure the family sees them. If you can express this, I would be interested (and I'm sure the family also) to know what blessings you have received from walking this journey with Lana.

Thank you for standing with us these past two years. You made so much difference in the lives of Lana and her family, and there will never be words strong enough to say thank you.

I am sending my love to you all. PPF

Good Evening Friends,

Bill called Friday afternoon looking for the messages fax. I sent it at 4:00 and he read every word to Lana. He could tell she could hear him and knew what he was saying as she communicated that she wanted to hear Patrick's twice.

There is not much new to report on Lana today (Sat), but I wanted you to know I checked on her a couple of times.

I talked to Mike this evening. He said Lana's vital stats are slowing down; her blood pressure is lower, her breathing rate is slower. She is heavily sedated and is no longer responding when you talk to her and rub her hands, feet, etc. I talked to Evelyn this morning and she said Lana was running some fever.

I am low on words tonight. My heart is heavy, as I know yours is. My prayer is simple: do what is best for Lana.

Peace to all,
PPF

Friday, June 30, 2006 1:11 PM CDT

A couple of housekeeping details before I go into Lana’s update.

(1) Sunday, July 2, is EVELYN’S BIRTHDAY. I know this is the worse of circumstances, but I hope (and know) that some of the Memphis people can acknowledge Evelyn’s birthday and do a little something for her.

(2) I will not be able to get to a computer until Saturday evening, so I won’t be sending out an email until then. Of course, if there is important news to share I will work it out to be at a computer, but I didn’t want you to think I wasn’t on the ball over the weekend!

I had a good visit with Evelyn this morning. There is not a lot new to report about Lana’s condition. Lana rested fairly well last night. It is still difficult to breath and she can’t really swallow. It’s very hard for her to communicate. They are keeping her sedated and she is set up for hourly pain meds. Although she is sedated, she does come in and out of alertness. She smiles and acknowledges people when they come in her room. Last night Jan put the phone to Lana’s ear and I was able to say hello to her. For years I have greeted her with, “Lana, Lana, Lana” and she has responded, “Paula, Paula, Paula.” When I said, “Lana, Lana, Lana” last night, I could hear her faint voice say, “Paula, Paula, Paula.” It wasn’t clear and I don’t know if anyone else in the room could tell what she was saying, but I knew exactly what was being said and it was like music to my ears.

Let me tell you about the setup where Lana is staying. The hospice people said, “We hear you throw big parties, so we are giving you the suite!” It is actually a little waiting room outside her room (the largest they had) and the waiting room has been dubbed “The Party Room”. There is food and people in the room all the time. There are balloons and flowers in Lana’s room so her room is cheerful. Evelyn said that last night Lana was in her mecca as all of Curtis and Patrick’s friends were surrounding her, making her laugh and talking to her. They hung out in the party room and played cards and dominoes. Exactly what they would have been doing at the Mason house.

Of course, other families on the hospice wing have been drawn in and included. A quote from Evelyn: “More sermons have been preached here in this hospital by your examples of sharing, giving, bonding, loving, than any preacher could preach in a year.” No offense if you are a preacher and you are reading this!! The entire hospital has been touched by your generosity. Food was sent home with the hospice nurses last night when they went off their shifts.

Yesterday, Lana expressed her wishes that she would like a Popsicle. Here came friends bearing three boxes of Italian Ices for everyone. Lana was only able to eat a small bite, but don’t know you it tasted so good to her. She also was interested in a doughnut. Here comes someone else with a huge box containing 3 dozen doughnuts. Evelyn said it was a good thing Lana didn’t ask for an elephant!!!!!

Evelyn said Lana’s sense of humor still shows up some. What struck me through our conversation was the sense of joy that still surrounds Lana and her family, even as they are experiencing so much sadness. It reminds me of these verses:

Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything. II Cor 6:10

But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…. Gal. 5:22

Whatever happens, dear brothers and sisters, may the Lord give you joy. I never get tired of telling you this. Phil 3:1

Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. James 1:2

I faxed 7 pages of messages to Lana yesterday afternoon before I left work. Evelyn said she read every message, every word to Lana and that Lana was hearing her. I will send out another fax this afternoon before I leave, so email me or post in the guestbook if you would like to be included. And check out the guestbook for a sweet post that Patrick left about midnight last night.

I guess that is it for today. I’ll be back with you tomorrow evening, unless something changes. The family again says THANK YOU, THANK YOU for every kindness, every prayer, every time you have reached out to them. It makes an impossible situation bearable and blessed. Because of our hope….

1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:1-5

Peace to all,
PPF

I talked to Bill, Lana’s brother this morning. Lana is being moved from ICU to the hospice floor (Room 5421) today, around noon he thought. It is not called hospice when it is in the hospital, but he didn’t have the specific name with him at that moment. He said what she is receiving is “comfort care”. She can have any meds she needs to be comfortable. She has been given meds to help her sleep more restfully and she is sleeping a lot, but has moments where she is still Lana, like saying “piddle” to something she doesn’t like. In 5-7 days, a re-evaluation will take place to see what needs to be done for Lana.

How Lana is this?!!! Hospice is getting the LARGEST room available for her since they know she will be having a big support crew around her. The family can be with her 24/7. There is a little waiting room on that floor. Bill told me that while she has been in ICU, there has been an overflow of food, drinks, etc., sent for family and friends. Other folks who were also in the ICU waiting room with their loved ones were invited to eat with the Mason gang. Here is a quote from an email I received: “People who had never met each other were sitting together sharing a meal and talking. Is it just me,or isn't that just what Lana would want?” There were also lots of nice comments about what a well-mannered, great group of kids (Curtis and Patrick’s friends) were in the ICU waiting room.

I have talked to Mike, Evelyn and Bill in the past 15 hours, and they all are so complimentary of the staff at Baptist East. The hospice director, Debbie, was very gracious, patient and kind in her explanations and discussions with the family yesterday.

The address of the hospital is: 6019 Walnut Grove, Memphis, TN 38120, if anyone wants to send a card.

I have the fax number to the nurses station on the hospice floor (boy, will they be sorry!) and will be sending faxes to the family once or twice a day. The past few days I have just been sending a list with names of people in prayer. Now that I have a more direct line, I can send messages to Lana and the family. So again, post on the website or email a message and I will get it to the family. Evelyn told me she read the lists to Lana yesterday. Bill said that although Lana isn’t communicating much, she does seem to take in what is being said to her, so that was a great comfort to me, knowing she knows you all are praying for her.

The family can never say thank you enough for all your support and love. Even in the pain of the past few days, there have been so many, many blessings and they all state they could not have gotten through this without you. Bill asked me this morning how many hits Lana’s website had and the count was 19,055. Wow! 19,055 times someone has thought of Lana. What a testament to who she is.

I’ll be back with you again – don’t know if today or tomorrow. I know you want all the information you can have and I’ll do my best to get it to you. Take care and thanks. Thanks. Thank you.

Peace to all,
PPF

I don’t have much new information about Lana, but wanted to keep in touch with you.

Lana is in really serious condition. Her breathing is still labored and difficult. Currently they have her sedated so she can rest easier. Options are being weighed as to what comes next. At this moment, she is not stable enough to move anywhere or decide what the next step will be.

Prayers are requested that the family will have clear, peaceful minds and hearts as they make decisions; that the doctors present all the information in a way that is understandable and helpful; that the doctors give their best to Lana and the family; that Lana will be comfortable and not in pain; that Lana will feel God’s presence and comfort; that those ministering to Lana and the family show graciousness, kindness, and patience.

Unless there is a major change in Lana’s condition today, I will not be doing another update. I will, of course, be back with you if needed. Thanks for all you are doing. Lana and her family are truly, deeply blessed by so many.

Peace to all,
PPF

Lana was given blood and plasma today in order to get her blood levels correct for the surgery. This also should help with her breathing as it raised her hemoglobin levels and that helps with pain. You understand that I only play a doctor on this website, I am not actually a doctor, so I am repeating to you what was told to me.

Lana went into surgery this afternoon around 2:00 - 3:00. The surgery took an hour. She was heavily sedated during the surgery. The surgery went well and the balloon/filter was inserted. This will not help with what is already in her lungs, but will hopefully stop more clots from coming in.

Lana is as alert as she can be after sedation, surgery, and pain meds. She is only eating a bite now and then. She is on oxygen and Evelyn said the mask is driving Lana crazy!

The family THANKS YOU SO MUCH for all your support and prayers. Evelyn said there were 24 people with them today as Lana went into surgery, and the gifts of food are most appreciated. Please continue your prayers, and if you want to have your name on the fax prayer list, email me or post it on this site. I'll be sending another fax about mid-morning on Wednesday.

Peace to all,
PPF

Tuesday, June 27, 2006 12:00 AM CDT

Lana's blood levels are now where they need to be for her to have the balloon procedure. When a time slot opens, they will operate. Mike described the procedure as going in the groin, up an artery and inserting a balloon in her lungs. This will not help the clots already in her lungs, but will act as a filter and keep other large clots from going into her lungs.

She is really having difficulty breathing, which makes it hard to rest. She is on quite a bit of pain medication so she is in and out of alertness.

Bill and Charlotte are in from Oklahoma and Evelyn finally arrived from Corpus in the wee hours of this morning. Continental made her sit in the Houston airport for many hours. Seems like we could have put her in a box and FedEx could have gotten her to Memphis quicker - and she wouldn't have weighed very much!

I am sending faxes to Lana letting her know who has sent prayers and wishes her way. If you would like to be included in a fax, please sign the guestbook here at CaringBridge, or send me an email.

I will be back in touch when I know more. The wonders of technology...Lana and Mike in Memphis, me in Houston, you guys all over the country---and we can be connected in our love of Lana.

Now get praying!!!!

Peace to all,
PPF

Dear Friends,

Lana is in ICU at Baptist East Hospital. Last night (Sunday) Mike took her in after she experienced difficulty breathing.

Scans show that Lana has blood clots in both legs and both sides of her lungs. They are currently giving her plasma to thicken her blood so that her body can withstand a surgery - a “balloon procedure”. In the simplest of layman’s terms: a filter that will keep more clots from going into her lungs.

Mike and the family are not able to receive phone calls right now as they are in ICU in the basement of the hospital. Brother Bill is on his way from Oklahoma and Mama T – Evelyn – is flying into Memphis late this evening. A lot is going on and what they need most from you right now is prayer.

The family asks for the following prayers: that the correct decisions about treatment are made, that the doctors are guided to do exactly the right things for Lana, that Lana is comfortable and not in pain.

I will be back to update the website when I have more news. I wish I had better news, but I felt sure you would want to know the latest.

Peace to all,
PPF

I talked to Mike last night and got an update on Lana.

Lana had another chemo treatment this past Tuesday, June 20. Remember, she is taking two chemo treatments – HOPEFULLY. She got the IV chemo drug Alimta on Tuesday at the clinic, and she takes a daily oral dose of a trial drug. She still does not know if she is taking a placebo or the true drug. Her next chemo appointment is Tuesday, July 11. At that time they plan on doing a scan, as she will have been on the Alimta and trial drug for 12 weeks on that date and she is hoping to see improvement. My understanding is that after 12 weeks the patient can ask if the real drug is being administered.

The downside to all this treatment is that Lana is sleeping most of the time. She has been wearing a pain patch and Dr. Tauer raised the dosage on the patch Tuesday as she is experiencing a lot of pain in her side. The drugs also make her nauseated so she has lost much of her appetite.

One bit of good news. The blood clot in her leg is getting better. She can walk some on it. She is still taking blood thinner and will continue that for some time.

I was privileged to be in Memphis with Lana in early June. She slept most of the day, but the night owl in her allowed a few hours of visiting in the evenings. I wanted to come by and say hi to the neighbors that I feel like I know after communicating with you these past 18 months, but didn’t want to leave Lana. We had hoped to get to church while I was in town but it wasn’t a good time for Lana to be up and around. She had been given a chemo treatment just a few days before I arrived. Evelyn was in Memphis this past week while Mike was away working. Lana has had the best in nursing care!

There’s not much more to report. Mike says thanks to everyone who has offered help. He and I will be in communication about their needs and I will let you know if/what you can do. Please keep Mike, Lana, Curtis and Patrick in your prayers as you have done for many months.

Peace to all,
PPF

P.S. My heart is on friendship today. Here are a few thoughts on that subject. This weekend, be a good friend to someone. They can probably use it!!!!!

I don't want to send the update I posted yesterday to the archives yet, but needed to add some more current news.

Lana had been saying this week that her leg hurt and thought it was because she had walked in high heels for two days while she was in Oklahoma. Yesterday (Friday) when I talked to her the pain was getting worse and she was starting to think it might be something more. By last night about 9:30pm, her calf was swollen and there were some streaks showing. It was decided she should go to an ER and have it checked out.

Well, Lana has a blood clot in that leg - she told me which one but I forgot! They admitted her to the hospital and started her on treatments. She will be getting a shot for 5 days to help dissolve the clot, and will be on the blood thinner Coumadin (oral) for quite a while. Dr. Tauer says this is not an uncommon thing in cancer patients.

Lana hopes to be out of the hospital by Monday. When I talked to her, she said the best thing about being in the hospital is that she can keep the room as cold as she wants!!!! She sounded in good spirits and says this is just a bump in the road and she will be back up and around soon.

BTW, new pictures from Lana's TX visit over in the picture album.

FRIDAY'S UPDATE:

I talked to Lana yesterday (Thursday 11th) afternoon about 4:30. She was leaving the clinic and had news for us.

First, when she went in Monday for her Alimta chemo she found out she was probably going to qualify for a clinical trial, so the clinic held off on administering the Alimta. She went to the clinic yesterday to find out she had qualified and would be starting chemo immediately. She had an Alimta treatment at the clinic and is scheduled to have one every 21 days. She will be taking the new trial chemo, Perifosine, orally at bedtime. This is taken daily.

The trial lasts 12 weeks. At the end of 12 weeks, if Lana doesn’t see any improvement she can find out if she is on Perifosine or a placebo. If she is on the placebo and wants to start taking Perifosine she can. This is a little unusual as not many clinical trials give that option. We have our fingers crossed (and prayers shooting upwards) that she is on the Perifosine and that is will make a difference in Lana’s condition.

Dr. Tauer also prescribed a “pain patch” for Lana so she doesn’t have to pop so many pills. She still has oral tablets if the pain is more intense, but again she is hoping the patch will give her more constant relief. And that the Perifosine will also help.

Lana sounded good when we talked. She was very pleased she qualified for the clinical trial. She had a great visit with her family in OK, although they wore her out, so this week she has been crashing on the couch and resting alot. One of the main side effects from the Alimta and Perifosine is tiredness but she is hoping she can overcome that and continue enjoying life. Be patient if she isn’t answering her emails or phone calls – hopefully the tiredness will pass.

Lana sends her love and thanks for your continued support. A year and a half is a long time to fight this daily battle, and you have not wavered in your encouragement, affirmation, laughter, and love. Thank you so much for that. Prayers are requested for Lana’s healing, for the clinical trial to be of help, for pain management, for the tiredness to pass, for Lana’s spirit to stay positive, for Mike and the boys to not tire as they daily walk this walk with Lana, for Dr. Tauer’s guidance as he makes decisions concerning Lana’s life.

Peace to all,
PPF

Dear Lord,
We thank you for the blessings that have been revealed during our journey with Lana. Thank you that we have seen Your hand again and again. Thank you for the community of believers who cover this country with prayers for Lana. Thank you for the Hope we have in You. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

After traveling from the Bahamas to Texas and points in-between, Lana had an appointment with Dr. Tauer this past Monday, May 1st. She has been experiencing more pain, so before she had another chemo treatment she wanted a scan. No improvement was seen and no chemo was administered.

The scan shows: (1)The lymph node in her lung has enlarged. They have been watching this for quite a while. It had been measuring ½ inch, now it is measuring 1 inch. From March until May it has grown ½ inch. This lymph node is near her esophagus area. (2)There is an enlarged lymph node under one of her arms (she couldn’t remember which – she was giving me this report as she was driving to Oklahoma on Tuesday). (3)There is an enlarged lymph node at the bottom of her lung, kind of sitting on top of her liver. Not in her liver, Dr. Tauer said, but near it. (4)The bottom lobe of her lung is not inflating properly because she doesn’t want to breathe deeply as it hurts to do so.

The scan also showed that the cancer in the abdomen has not grown much. The pain seems to be radiating down from the chest area, possibly because that one node is near her esophagus.

Lana is going to start a new chemo Monday, May 8th. The chemo is Alitma. She has to have B12 and folic acid in order to take this chemo, so she had a B12 shot while at the clinic and is taking the folic acid orally. Dr. Tauer may combine Alitma with another chemo but was going to do some research on that while Lana is in Oklahoma this week. Lana’s niece, Amy (daughter of brother Bill and SIL Charlotte) is getting married this weekend. Mike and the boys will be coming to OK later this week.

Lana asked for specific prayers for pain management. She said she has felt more like “her old self” lately and doesn’t want to go to stronger meds for pain, as there are more physical side effects from stronger meds. Of course, any prayers for the family, for Lana’s complete healing, for guidance for Dr. Tauer, are all welcomed and appreciated.

While Lana was in Texas, Jeff and I were honored to host an evening of prayer and laughter in honor of the Diva. Two of Lana’s childhood friends came (Les Polvado and Steve McCampbell), along with a long-time friend of Bill and Charlotte’s (Pam Speights). Everyone in the group gathered around Lana, Mike and Evelyn and we entreated God to heal Lana. I believe He can, I just don’t know what His plan is – and isn’t that frustrating!?!?!?!? We ask you to do the same.

Hopefully I will have pictures from Lana’s travels available soon. In the meantime, I wish

Peace to all.

Lana and Mike spent Monday and Tuesday with Dr. Tauer. Monday was a discussion about the next round of treatment. She is going to be taking two drugs she has taken before, but not in this combination. Lana will be taking Tarceva orally for the lung area and Avastin as a drip for the abdominal area. The cancer has reacted favorably to these two components before.

Lana was experiencing pain again so she had a CT scan Tuesday. The lung cancer is the same; the abdominal cancer has grown about 10 percent. The abdominal cancer is not a mass or tumor; rather, it is covering her intestines. The doctor described it like this: when you dip a straw into a milkshake and take it out, the straw is coated with the shake. That’s what the cancer looks like in her abdomen. This is what is causing her pain, especially, at times, when she eats.

Avastin does not have many adverse side effects, but Tarceva has many. For that reason Lana is not going to start the treatments until after her birthday trip to the Bahamas. She is scheduled for her first Avastin treatment on Tuesday, April 6.

Dr. Tauer told Mike and Lana that he has followed the normal protocol for treatment of this cancer, and now they are into the area of using treatments that are not as tried and true. Lana wants to continue to try whatever he recommends, and of course, there is the power of prayer and God’s healing in her corner. As you can imagine, this has been a sobering few weeks as she sees her options being narrowed. But Lana is a fighter and she has the gift of family, friends, prayer, laughter, love. Please continue to support her and her family as they decide which paths to take, what decisions to make.

Lana, Mike, Curtis and Patrick will all be going to the Bahamas. She is looking forward to the trip, being with friends and family, and getting physically and mentally rested to begin the new chemos when she returns.

Thank you for your concern, encouragement and support. Some of you have emailed me as to what you can do to help. Right now, Mike says they are doing ok. I will let you know if that changes. Sending a card or a surprise, leaving a phone message, sending an email, those are all things that Lana enjoys. Until we talk next time…..

Peace to all.

I took the following poem off the website of Lester Ira Hayes. (www.brooklynchurchplant.blogspot.com) He is not quite one and has spent most of his young life in the NICU and PICU in New York City. These words remind me of what we often take for granted - a normal day.

NORMAL DAY
by Mary Jean Iron

Normal day,
Let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you, love you,
Bless you before you depart.
Let me not pass you by
In quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may,
For it may not always be so.
One day I shall dig my nails into the earth,
Or bury my face in the pillow,
Or stretch myself taut
Or raise my hands to the sky
And want more than all the world,
Your return.

Tuesday, March 7, 2006 11:47 AM CST

Well, I don’t know where to start. I have had several conversations with Mike and Evelyn the past few days, a couple of emails from Lana, and then finally talked to The Diva herself last night.

Each different, separate round of chemo is called a “line” and Lana has been on her 3rd line of chemo. Lana went in last Tuesday (2/28/06) for the fourth round of her 3rd line chemo. She told Dr. Tauer she had been hurting so he ordered a CT scan before he began the chemo. From the scan he could tell that nothing has changed since the scan taken after the first treatment of this current chemo, so there was no reason to give her the fourth round. The abdominal cancer was no longer responding to this 3rd line chemo, and they already knew the lung cancer had not responded since she quit taking the Tarceva in December.

Here is a quote from one of Lana’s emails to me: “The Tarceva was keeping my lungs ‘in check’ but when the cancer moved to my abdomen the Tarceva did not work for it. So I was taken off the Tarceva and the lungs started growing again. The Jemzar/Avastin worked for one treatment to reduce the abdomen but didn’t help the lung.”

So currently Dr. Tauer is looking for what to do for the 4th line of chemo. Mike and Lana have asked if there is some chemo mix that can be tried that targets both areas; one component for the lung, a separate component for the abdomen. There is also a possibility of looking at some research opportunities, etc. As of this writing, they just don’t have an answer as what to do next.

Needless to say, Lana is very disappointed. She said last night she is not in a good place emotionally, to quote her she was in a “crappy frame of mind.” She asked specifically for prayers for her emotional well-being, prayers that Dr. Tauer can be guided to medications that can help Lana, that we boldly ask Our Father to heal her. She is very up and down emotionally and may not really be up to talking, so please don’t be offended if she doesn’t answer the phone or communicate with you right now. The best place to communicate with her is the CaringBridge guestbook or sending her a card. If you need her address, email me (see below) and I will get that address to you. Lana said to someone yesterday that she really appreciated that people have been patient and haven’t given up on her, so please hang in there with Lana as she deals with this latest piece of news and send up lots of prayers in her behalf.

As of this writing, Lana and Mike are still planning on going to the Bahamas for her birthday (March 27). I have added new pictures to the CaringBridge photo album. The pics are from the Mason/Thrailkill trip to Yellowstone.

I hope to have another update soon after Lana hears from Dr. Tauer. In the meantime, pray. Hard. Often. Boldly.

Peace to all.

Lana spent yesterday at West Clinic and I have the update. I talked to Evelyn last evening while Lana was getting chemo, and again this morning. Lana has to have a steroid treatment so she doesn't have an adverse reaction to the chemo and the steroid "wires" her so she was up all night. When I talked to Evelyn this morning around 10:30 or so, Lana had just gone to sleep, so you know she will be Sleeping Beauty for a while.

Lana had her three-component chemo yesterday. She also had a CT scan and had a good report. The cancer in her abdomen showed considerable shrinkage. Lana wanted to say her abdomen had shown considerable shrinkage, but actually it was the cancer that showed the shrinkage.

The lungs were also looked at, and there is a difference of opinion about whether there has been change in the spot they are watching. Dr. Tauer said no, the radiologist said yes. So for now, what is being said is that spot looks like it did not respond to the chemo.

While Lana was discussing her CT with Dr. Tauer, she told him she has been having almost constant headaches. He immediately sent her for a scan of her head. He came back in after looking at the films and said, " he saw a pea-sized brain that was clear." That was a relief to Lana of course. The clear part - she already knew about the pea-brain.

She will go back next Tuesday (Valentines) for her Jemzar booster, then be off for two weeks. Her next scheduled chemo appointment is Feb. 28. She and Mike are planning a possible trip for her birthday and Dr. Tauer said the trip was important and he wanted her to feel good on the trip, so we're not sure when the next treatment or scan will be (after the Feb. 28th treatment). When I know more, I will pass that on.

Evelyn will go home Monday the 13th, so those of you in Corpus, get ready. Hurricane Evie is blowing back in. The family asks you continue to remember the whole family in your prayers. This is tough on everyone and lots of adjustments have to be made. Over a long period of time that gets old and you want your regular life back. So this week, say a special prayer for all the guys in the house.

Lana sends her love and thanks. You and your encouragement are treasures in her life.

Peace to all,
PPF

I just got off the phone with the real, actual Lana. She was getting her chemo booster as we talked. For the first time in a long while she is feeling emotionally and somewhat physically better and was laughing and telling funny stories - she sounded more like the Lana we all love and are praying for.

Lana had a full chemo treatment last week - meaning she had all three components of her treatment. Today she was getting a "booster" of Gemzar; then she will wait two weeks and have a CAT scan. Depending on what is seen on that scan, chemo will continue or be adjusted. She feels like she has gotten some relief from the bloated feeling she was having in her abdomen, but is still having some pain and uncomfortable feelings in that area. Her lungs continue to "look good."

She sends a big shout-out to everyone, and thanks you for continuing to remember her. She is checking the guestbook, so go by and leave her a message. Lana really enjoys hearing from you. By the way, Evelyn (her mom) is there with the family right now.

Peace to all.

Lana went in last week for some testing...and the results are not what she had hoped. Adenocarcinoma (the same type cancer which was in her lungs)has been found in the upper part of her abdomen, outside of the intestinal wall. This is the spot that was mentioned earlier in the summer (June 29) and was apparently responding to Tarceva for a time, but no longer is responding. The good news is her lungs look ok.

Lana is beginning a new round of chemo today. The treatment is made up of three components: Gemzar, Avastin, carbo-platinum. She will have a treatment today, one next week, one two weeks after that. There will be more teatments but I don't know the schedule right now. She will no longer be taking Tarceva. The Tarceva had caused some painful skin problems, so Lana is grateful for those side effects to be going bye-bye. She is hoping that the carbo-platinum will not make her hair fall out as it did last time. Dr. Tauer said her hair MIGHT not fall out this time. She has about an inch growth of salt and pepper hair right now and it came in thicker than usual.

So, friends, family, prayer partners - Lana is once again asking for your help as she battles this new setback. As we talked, she still displayed that "totally Lana" sense of humor and we laughed more than we talked seriously. But you know that underneath it all, Lana has to be worried, so I ask that you continue to fight with Lana.

We'll be talking again soon. In the meantime,
Peace to all. PPF

Just a quick update. I just spoke with Eveylyn. She was in the Bozeman, Montana airport waiting to fly home to Corpus. She, Lana, Mike, Curtis, Patrick, Bill & Charlotte just spent several days singing, snowmobiling, eating, freezing, praying and laughing with 450 Christians in the West Yellowstone area. A very small Church of Christ congregation hosts this weekend every year (this was the 15th year) and this was the first year most of the Thrailkill family was there together. Evelyn and Louis helped build the church building there, and Evelyn said Louis must have been doing handstands to see his family filling up a whole row at the services.

Lana is coming back to do some medical testing, and the family asks blessings on that testing. I will have more later on that. But for now, say a prayer for Lana when you are talking with God. Thank Him that Lana has been with us for over a year now (since diagnosis) and that He will continue to do what is best for Lana and her family. Boldly ask for continued healing.

Have a blessed week. We will talk again soon.

Peace to all,
PPF

Thought for the day: I am reading the newest Jan Karon book "Light from Heaven." This thought has stayed with me: Go out on a limb. That is where the fruit is.

Lana had a doctor's appointment and CT scan last Monday, September 26th. Then she went home, packed her bags, and flew to Anchorage, Alaska to spend some time with Mike as he is there to do training for FedEx. Curtis also went with her. She will be back Thursday, October 6.

I talked to Evelyn and she gave us the following report: According the the CT scan, the cancer has not spread. It has not gotten larger, it has not gotten smaller. Tarceva "keeps it within its bounds." The spot that had shown up in her abdomen is not showing. Evelyn said the radiolgy people said they had to know to look and check that area, otherwise they would have seen nothing.

Lana will stay on Tarceva for three more months and go back for more tests at the end of that time. The unpleasant side effects are still with her and she has lost some weight because of that. Tarceva can affect bone density and she tested for that but the results are not back.

It has now been a year since Lana was diagnosed with cancer. What a year it has been, and the whole family is grateful for your continued support and prayers. Don't stop now! She is still fighting to be cancer-free and can use your encouragement, love and prayers. I think this year has been meaningful to many of us, and I hope the lessons we are learning are not quickly forgotten. God has our best interest at heart, even when it doesn't look like it to our human side. We can't go through this world alone. There is time to give support and encouragement, and a time to take those gifts given so graciously by both friends and strangers.

Got a call from Lana on her way home from seeing the doctor yesterday (Tuesday the 26th). Lots to report from the PET scan....

First, the lymph node they have been watching for several months looked normal. There has been change for the better.

Second, there were two spots on the lung they had been watching. Lana had been told during a past visit they could be scar tissue or a shadow from her port-a-cath; there were different opinions. (Re:May 5 journal) On this visit, the spots were significantly reduced - the doctor said they looked alot better. So, it was determined they were cancer spots since they responded to the Tarceva. Bad news cancer, good news they responded.

Third, the "something" in her lower abdomen area, maybe colon, also responded to the Tarceva; that it had significantly gone away. They could tell it was not in her colon, which meant it was not diverticulitis. Again, bad news cancer, good news Tarceva. It is worrisome that the cancer had moved out the lung area, but Lana and the doctor are encouraged that she has resonded so well to the Tarceva.

There are some uncomfortable, inconvenient side effects to Tarceva but Lana was told that over time the body can adjust some and the side effects will hopefully lessen. Dr. Tauer said Lana is a prime candidate for Tarceva, that she is responding well, and that she could be on it for a long time. For now, she has a two month reprieve from doctor visits and does not have to go back until late September. At that time, along with her regular tests, she will have a bone density scan since all the chemo can cause bone loss.

The battle is not over, but Lana is pleased with yesterday's outcome. She had laughter in her voice and was cracking jokes as always. She and Mike ask that all you prayer warriors not grow tired in your thoughts and prayers for their family. They appreciate you so much and send their love and good wishes to all who keep up with this website.

Peace to all,
PPF

I finally got the hear the voice of Lana today. She has had allergy problems the past few days and is croaking like a frog, but I could still recognize her laugh.

Lana went to see Dr. Tauer yesterday. She had a check-up and a CT scan. Her report was: the spots on the lung look ok, but the lymph node they have been watching has changed, looks a little bigger. Also, there is "something" in, around, on her colon. Not sure about the specifics of that. Dr. Tauer said it could be diverticulitis or cancer. They couldn't tell from looking at the scan if it was "disease or inflammation."

Lana has started taking a fairly new oral chemo named Tarceva. She was also prescribed a strong antibiotic for treatment of diverticulitis.

She will go back in a month for more tests. I think she can have a PET scan next time - insurance regulates the frequency of the PET scan. That will tell them more, and they can see if there has been any improvement coming from the new drugs.

Lana and Mike have done some things together this summer, but Lana still tires easily so it has been a quiet summer. If you call and don't get a fast (or any) reply, please don't take it personally! Some days Lana just doesn't have the energy to talk - you know there is something wrong if Lana doesn't feel like talking!!!!

Keep the Masons in your prayers. Mike's family is dealing with health issues and I know they could use a prayer also. If you've got a moment, drop Lana a card or send her an email. OR, leave a message in the guestbook, where activity has been slow lately.

As my 7 year old says these days, PEACE OUT!
Paula

There has been a Lana sighting! And I got to sight her with my own eyes this weekend!

Lana surprised Evelyn for Mother's Day by meeting up with brother Bill and going to Corpus Christi Friday the 6th. They all had a good visit and Bill went back to Oklahoma on Tuesday. Evelyn was totally suprised by Lana's visit, and said having both her kids home for Mother's Day was the best present ever!

Lana actually got up before mid-afternoon Friday the 13th to drive with Evelyn to Sugar Land to see good friends Brenda Collins Onstead and Paula Parks Fulford (me!). Some major shopping at the Talbot's outlet was done, Mexican food was eaten, and a slumber party lasted until late Friday night. Saturday was sleeping late, more shopping and having a nice dinner at Brenda's in the evening.

One neat "coincidence": Some friends of Brenda's son dropped by the house Friday night and ended up visiting with us for an hour or so. Come to find out, one of the guys is the brother of Alan Bryan (?I hope I remembered the name correctly?), the ACU graduate who lived with Mike and Lana for several months a few years ago. Alan is the person who got Precious, I mean Patrick, interested in rugby, and was a great influence on both the boys. Is it a small world, or what?!?!?!

Sunday was church and the attending of Les Polvado's parents' (Gene and Nancy) 50th anniversary party at First Colony Church of Christ. The Thrailkills and Polvados have been close family friends for a long time, back when Gene was the minister where Lana's family went to church. An added blessing was getting to see Les installed as an elder Sunday morning. Brenda, Lana, Les and Paula were all at LCU at the same time. Lana and Evelyn drove off into the sunset late Sunday afternoon. A great time was had by all.

LCU news:In a surprise move, Phillip and Jan (Presnall) Nichols were at church Sunday morning. They have a daughter who graduated from University of Houston and they were in for that. Phillip, Jan, Lana, Paula and Brenda were all in Meistersingers together so that was a happy reunion. Lana also got to visit with Hal Elrod but I didn't get my camera out in time to take that picture.

There are pictures from the weekend in the photo album on this website. They aren't great but they are what I have at this time. Hopefully Mike will get Lana's pictures loaded on a CD and sent to me and we will have more pictures.

The weekend was such a gift to all of us. We laughed, laughed, laughed, shed a few tears, reminisced, sang along to cd's, ate some good food, prayed, and laughed a little more. We all thought the weekend was such a boost to our spirits and were so thankful for this special time.

Just talked to Evelyn this Monday a.m. When they got back to the Corpus area, they stopped in Portland to eat at the Dairy Queen and ended up seeing alot of church folks they hadn't seen in ages. Seems the DQ is the after-church hangout and they timed it just right to see many loving long-time friends. Lana is sleeping off the weekend today, so not much movement is expected out of her!!! We ran her ragged.

Lana talked several times over the weekend about the importance of this website in her healing journey. The outpouring of love and encourangement has gotten her through many dark moments, and she sends her thanks and love to you all.

Peace to all, PPF

Hello Everyone,

Are you sitting down? Of course you are, you're at your computer!!! My appointment was moved up so here is the latest.

I had the CT scan done and Dr. Tauer said his 2 radiologists see 2 different things. One says it looks like the cancer could still be there, but it has not changed in size. The other says there is no active cancer and what they are seeing is scar tissue from the surgery and what was in the lymph node is shadowing from my port-a-cath.

Dr. Tauer says since the spots we are watching did not change since the PET scan he is calling this a **clinical remission**!! He wants me to come back in 2 months for another CT scan and if there is still no change another 2 months for a PET scan. This is good news, but we are still in the pray and wait mode. Michael & I feel the next appointment, June 28th, will really give us peace since that will be almost 4 months off of chemo.

I have been feeling better everyday and the neuropathy in my feet is slowly going away. I am also looking forward to growing hair; I have a little peach fuzz right now. Michael says it looks like it's white, but I say blonde :)

This battle isn't over yet, but I know I would not have made it this far without your prayers and support. You have been there for me and given me the encouragement and the courage to keep going. You are the best of the best. God has truly blessed me!! I wish I could give you a big hug right now.

Extra big hugs and kisses to Paula for all her work on this site. She might enjoy the peace and quiet for a couple of months!! I will let her know as soon as we find out anything on June 28th.

I love all of you so much!!
Lana

Peter Jennings and I are close friends now!!

Here goes:

No CHEMO TODAY!! (04/07/05)
We discussed the lymph node (see March 18 journal entry) and I brought a copy of the first PET scan I had in September. Dr. Tauer and the Radiologist looked at it and know for certain it was not a concern at that time. Dr. Tauer now has decided to wait on continuing my treatment.

Here are the 3 reasons:

1) I have gotten the maximum effects that I am going to get from this current course of chemo.
2) The chemo has done what it is supposed to do. It did kill some of the cancer, but cancer is still in the lining and the lymph node situation is new, telling us the chemo is no longer working.
3) However, the lymph node situation COULD BE an inflammation due to the surgery or chemo and it is a situation that will be closely watched.

Dr. Tauer wants to give my body a rest, as I have lately had more serious side effects from the chemo. I will go back on Cinco de Mayo (May 5 for those of you who are not bi-lingual) for a CT, and if there are any changes he will start me on a new chemotherapy at that time. If everything is the same we wait another month. He said this has become a hard cancer to evaluate, so he wants to wait

Bottom line: At some point, depending on timing and my condition, I will have to have more treatment. At this time I don’t know when or what. The Dr. is not worried about waiting this long, but I am a little scared. The chemo had become my comfort, knowing that it was killing the cancer. But I know deep inside that it has been your prayers and love that are my true support and comfort.

As Paula says, pray that I am able to turn this worry over to God and enjoy feeling better.

Who knows, maybe I will see some hair on my head!!!

Thank you so much for the blessings you send my way; you will never know how much it has done for me. I love all of you so much! My cup runneth over.

All my love,
Lana

I didn't speak to Lana directly, so I am cutting/pasting the email she sent me last night.

Lana wrote: "Here's the latest~ ~ ~

The PET scan showed that I still have active cancer in a lymph node and the lining of my lung, but Dr. Tauer says it is minimal. He said they are not new spots, it's just they didn't show up on a CT. The PET scan makes the cancer "glow" and that is why he was able to see it.
As of now I will be taking 2 more treatments 3-18 and 4-7. He thinks this should get what is left, but I will have another scan around the April treatment.

I know this is in God's hands, and that is what Dr. Tauer said before we left tonight."

Lana is having chemo today. So as you can see, we need those prayers to continue to push Lana over the goal line!! She could really use your encouragement right now, so take a moment and sign the guestbook. You are APPRECIATED more than you will ever know.

Peace to all. PPF

Ok, a news update from Lana. First of all, she said Dr. Tauer said "DON'T GET EXCITED. We don't have the whole picture yet, and won't for a few days."

Lana had a CT scan this morning, and the report was "no active cancer." Dr. Tauer wants to do a PET scan but because of insurance, Lana can't have that scan until Thursday afternoon. Tauer says he is happy to be doing the PET scan because it means there is progess from the chemo and he will be able to see more with this scan.

Lana did say that when she had a PET scan before (at the beginning of all this), some cancer cells did not show up. Dr. Tauer found them when he did the biopsy so this scan is not infallible, but can show more detail than the CT scan. Definitely one prayer request: that the PET scan is accurate.

She did not have a chemo treatment today. She may have a treatment Thursday based on what the scan shows. I asked her if she would want another treatment no matter what the scan shows to "just make sure" and she said as much as she dreads having another treatment, she would strongly consider it.

Of course we know that this good report is not just because of the doctors and chemo, but God working through the doctors, nurses, chemo and treatments. A prayer of praise for all He has done through so many!

Don't you know it will be a long 48 hrs until she can have the next scan and have more information?!?!? A prayer request for patience, calm, and good outcomes.

Thanks to all for hanging in there with Lana and her family. Keep your prayers going and your fan letters coming.

Peace to all.

It's 2 a.m. and I can't get to sleep, so I am reading and "glowing" in the love that you are passing on to me. I am keeping my eyes on God and keeping my spirits high for tomorrow. For those of you who are reading this, I will call PPF as soon as I talk to Dr. Tauer, and she will, in her wonderful, talented way, get the news to you.
I will say this again, and I hope you understand, I could not have made it this far without all of you cheering me on. I am so blessed. What an awesome God to have allowed such wonderful people in my life. THANK YOU!!!
Oh, and I really love those Paula's, don't you?

Just a short update about Lana's 5th chemo treatment on Monday the 21st. Everything went fine and she is home resting.

She is scheduled for a scan and chemo treatment #6 in three weeks, which would be March 14th; treatment being dependent on what they see on the scan and her counts.

Pray that this 5th treatment continues the shrinkage of the bad cells, and that Lana will not suffer too greatly from the effects of the chemo. Thanks for checking in!

Peace to all. PPF

Finally, news from the Mason mansion!

I talked to Lana late Wednesday afternoon. She was feeling good....except for the aches and pains of a slight motorcycle mishap on Tuesday! This week has been her "up" week; she was feeling less effects from the chemo. Last week she had blood tests done and her counts were low, so she received a shot and was told to stay away from people, so she couldn't socialize. The weather was nice and she thought she could at least take a little spin around the neighborhood Tuesday. But she didn't mean SPIN literally!! Anyway, she is OK (as OK as she is ever going to be if you know what I mean)and plans to get back up on the horse that throwed her one day soon.

Lana continues to be a star at West Clinic. On Tuesday the local PBS station filmed her at the clinic. They are doing some sort of documentary about how technology and electronics are helping patients, medical advancements, etc. Not exactly sure of the focus of the film, but it will be airing on the Memphis PBS station in March. I'll be in touch with Mike to get exact dates (hopefully) and you can catch a glimpse of Lana. I asked her if she wore her pink wig and tiara, but no, she wore a scarf and her boa. Not sure if the boa is featured in the documentary or not. She didn't want to scare the PBS people - - - like they haven't seen it ALL!!

Lana's next (5th) chemo treatment is scheduled for this coming Monday, February 21st. She will not have a scan this time, that will happen before her 6th treatment. When I say the treatment is scheduled, it depends on her counts. If they are at satisfactory levels she will have the treatment.

Lana said that she went through the guestbook and read entries this week, and that she laughed alot. She sends thanks and love for bringing a smile when she sometimes doesn't feel like smiling. Please keep her in your prayers that Monday goes as smoothly as possible, and that the chemo continues to do its job.

Reminder to Corpus residents: The Dian Malouf Trunk Show is at Julian Gold Tuesday and Wednesday, February 22 and 23. She is the GO GIRL RING designer. The show will be in San Antonio at Julian Gold on Thursday and Friday, February 24 and 25. If you have been wanting to get a GO GIRL RING, they may have them there, or you can order one. Click the Dian Malouf link below to see the dates of trunk shows all over Texas.

Keep praying, and keep that fan mail coming!!!!

Peace to All. PPF

I picked up the phone and heard a laughing Lana on the other end of the line. She was calling from the clinic with good news. The scan she had early this morning showed a 25% reduction in the cancer! She was waiting for her turn to begin chemo as we talked. She sounded really good and wanted to pass on some thoughts to you, her fantastic support system.

But first, let's get the particulars out of the way. She will have (4th) chemo today, then is scheduled for another (5th) chemo session in 3 weeks ~ don't know exact date of that session yet. 3 weeks after the 5th chemo session, she will have another scan to see further progress (notice I didn't say IF, but am thinking positively that there will be further progress). That's the schedule for now.

I asked her if she had her pink wig on today, but no, only a hat. She said she has to get up so dadgum early that there is no time or energy for foofooing up for the doctor. She was planning on taking a nap while the chemo is being administered.

Lana said that in the past few days she has felt a calm about this situation, a calm that comes from knowing she is covered in prayer. She said she felt as if she has been "in a blanket of friends who have kept her warm and comfortable." She also says laughter has helped so much and she LOVES reading and re-reading the guestbook. She especially got a kick out of the Schnuck's exchanges.

She then quoted from the poem about What Cancer Cannot Do ~~~ it can't shatter her faith, her hope, her peace, and it has not conquered her spirit and her friendships. If anything, the friendships have grown tremendously during this time. She credits all of you, through God's hand, with helping her through this rough time, and asks that you continue to cover her with prayer. Prayers are being answered!!!

I am concluding with the poem Lana quoted to me. Thanks for hanging in with Lana all these months. It means more to her than you will EVER KNOW!!!

What Cancer Cannot Do
Author Unknown
Winter 1999

Cancer is so limited.
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot shut out memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot invade the soul.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the spirit.

Yes, Lana was originally scheduled for a scan and treatment today (Monday) the 24th. Those appointments were moved to Thursday Jan 27th. The doctor is out of town right now.

Lana will have a CT scan first thing Thursday morning. After the scan is studied, the doctors will (a) keep Lana on the same course of treatment, or (b) change treatments. Mike said he would try to let me know soon after the decision is made.

Evelyn went home to Corpus last Thursday the 20th. For those of you who don't know, Evelyn volunteers full time at a cancer clinic like the clinic Lana is going to now. Evie also volunteers at a hospital. I will be faxing her the guestbook from time to time so don't say anything ugly about her, thinking she won't be reading it!!! Mike is home with Lana right now. Thank goodness for FedEx and his somewhat flexible schedule.

After each treatment, it takes Lana longer to bounce back, so please continue to remember this family in your prayers. And if you have time, drop her a note or sign the guestbook. She is not checking emails these days, so those two ways are the best ways to contact her. I can also pass on a message to her if you want; just contact me at the email address below.

I hope that wherever you are sitting and reading this update, you are not covered in snow!! Or if you are, you are warm and cozy. I'll have more to write after Lana's apppointment on Thursday.

Peace to all, PPF

I talked to Evelyn late Monday nite. Chemo day was another long and full day. The clinic gave Lana more pre-meds before chemo, so she didn't have a reaction this time. They were at the clinic most of the day, didn't return home until after 7:00.

Lana will lay low today. Around January 24th they will do another CT scan to look for improvement. Chemo adjustments could be made, depending on what they see.

Lana and the family say THANK YOU so much for your prayers and support. The guestbook continues to be a source of encouragement, laughter, and support. Specific prayers for Lana right now would be minimal side effects from the chemo; that the chemo continues to attack the cancer cells and that Lana shows improvement at the next scan; that as Lana goes through the lows and highs of this chemo cycle her faith will not waver and her sense of humor will sustain her; that her family and support group continues to feel comfort, strength, peace and courage from our faithful Father.

Check the pictures in the photo album on this site. I've added new ones. I am also adding more on the We Love Lana picture website (link is below). Those additions are on an on-going basis as I have time to add.

I just got off the phone with Lana. She had a smile in her voice! The scan shows that there has been some shrinkage of the cancer cells, that the treatment is working!!

Lana's next treatment is scheduled for January 3rd. When we talked, she was waiting to get a shot to help with her blood cell count so she would be ready for her next treatment. She will have another scan on January 24th to see if there is further improvement. The doctor did say that sometimes the chemo stops being effective after the second or third treatment, so they will have the scan on the 24th to see if there is further improvement or if a different treatment should be considered.

I asked Lana if she had any words for the troops and she said, "Thanks so much for the prayers. It is the PRAYERS, together with the chemo, that have made this possible. Thank you, Thank you!!!" She also said she would be sending me new pictures for the guestbook picture album.

I asked how she has been feeling and she said she tires easily. She had to drink something in preparation for the scan and it had not set well with her stomach, but that soon will pass.

Happy New Year to everyone connected with Lana's website. Please continue to pray for Lana and her family; that 2005 will be THE TOTAL HEALING YEAR for Lana; that blessings can be found in this time of trial and concern; that God will be glorified in all that is said and done on behalf of Lana; that bonds of love and friendship are forged, strengthened, healed through this incredible journey together with Lana.

Peace to all. PPF

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Cor 9:15

Tuesday, December 28, 2004 3:15 PM CST

A quick update on Lana's Christmas. Christmas was laid back at the Mason house. Lots of presents and good food. It was a nice day. On Sunday, Mike, Lana, Curtis, Patrick and Little Evie all drove to Florence, Alabama (about a 2-2 1/2 hr drive) to help the Mason family celebrate Mike's grandmother's 90th birthday! Lana got to see all of Mike's family. It was a full day and was good to see everyone.

Lana's CT scan is scheduled for 9:00 am Thursday, December 30th. They should know the results the same day. I should be hearing from them and will post the results as soon as I know something, so be checking this website later in the day.

Please continue your prayers for Lana: that the scan results will be positive and show improvement from the chemo; that her treatment will continue to be the correct treatment; that Lana's spirits stay positive and upbeat; that the effects of chemo are few and swift; that God's Healing be upon Lana; that Lana's support system continues to feel energized; that Mike, the boys and Little Evie experience God's comfort, strength and wisdom as they also suffer from this illness.

Peace to all and Happy Days in 2005.

In Lana's words, she's been feeling "yucky" since her last chemo treatment. She hasn't felt like posting an update, so this is a quick entry to keep eveyone current.

Lana had her second chemo treatment Monday December 13th. She again had a reaction, so she was at the clinic most of the day. On December 30th she will have a CT scan to see how/if the chemo is working. Adjustments to treatment may happen based on that scan. Her third chemo treatment is scheduled for January 3rd, 2005.

Specific prayers include not feeling "yucky" during the holidays; that the chemo is doing its job and killing the cancer cells; that the doctors continue to have discernment about Lana's treatment and do what is best for her; that the Lord's Will is done, and that Lana and family are open to that Will. (That's a hard one.)

Merry Christmas to all. Please be safe if you are traveling, and enjoy your holiday time.

Peace to all. PPF

GOING…GOING…ALMOST ALL GONE.

I am losing my hair!!!!! Talk about cute, it’s not me!!! (see new pics on photo album page here on the site.)

It started coming out last Thursday night and my husband now has hair on his chest. It wasn’t to bad at first but it hit me hard on Saturday. First I went outside and started brushing, and brushing and brushing and realized it just kept coming out. Since Curtis and Patrick were home we went up to Fantastic Sam’s and we all got haircuts. I will send the pictures to Paula.

Curtis took it harder than I did, he has been growing his hair for 3 years and it was really long. He got tears when they were cutting it and I had to ask, are you sad because of losing your hair or because mom is sick? Well, he answered “both”! Good Kid.

He and Patrick had hair long enough to send to 'Locks Of Love'. (see link below) It had to be at least 8”. I wouldn’t let Michael cut his because I spent 8 years looking at the “high & tight” Marine cut on him and one of us has to look presentable!!!

I am feeling good right now, but Evelyn says that’s because it’s time for more chemo. I go on the 13th, so I am trying to get some shopping done while I’m feeling good.

I hope all of you have a WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON. And remember what Michael said in the guestbook, mend any wrongs and give the ones you love an extra hug.

My love to ALL of you,
Lana

My Aunt sent me a beautiful heart necklace last week and wrote this:

Dear Lana Gay,
Here is a little something from my heart to your heart. It’s to help remind you of all the people who love you and are praying for you and your doctors.
I believe in miracles; I believe in the power of prayer; I believe that God works in mysterious ways; I believe in love; I believe in love’s healing power. I believe that God loves you more than we can understand.
I love you,
Dixie Gay

Isn’t that beautiful, it made me think of all of you that have been praying for me and encouraging me. I will wear my heart and take all of you with me everywhere I go and I know I will be stronger having you with me.

Oh, no comment on the middle name!!!! My boys give me enough grieve about it as it is. Patrick really enjoys telling his friends to ask my mom if she’s “gay”

Lana says hello and sends her LOVE to everyone.

Lana and family had a very nice Thanksgiving together. Patrick was home all week, although that doesn't mean Lana saw much of him!! Mike, Lana, Curtis, Patrick and Evie all spent some quality time bonding around the tables - the poker table and the dining table - and Patrick went back to school late last evening. Lana has not experienced too many negative effects from this first chemo treatment. What a blessing. Drugs have mostly helped with the symptoms she has experienced. Yeah! for drugs!

Lana visits West Clinic tomorrow (Nov 30th). She will have bloodwork and headwork (as she puts it). The clinic has a staff shrink that patients meet with, and her first visit is tomorrow. Lana is worried that they will try to keep her there all day and night instead of the one hour allotted!! Her next chemo is SCHEDULED for December 13th, dependent on tests she will have that morning. After that, she will have another scan at the end of December to see if there is any change. Chemo can then be adjusted after the scan is studied.

PRAY PRAY PRAY for postive results!!!

The whole clan says THANK YOU, once again, for your continued support through the guestbook, prayers, cards, food, etc etc etc. It is very humbling and very touching to have so much outreach and it is so appreciated. Continue to talk to Lana via the guestbook as she is not checking emails too often. You can also send me (PPF; snydertxgal@yahoo.com) an email that I can get to her.

ENJOY THIS SEASON OF GIVING AND LOVING.

Lana began chemo today!

Lana and family were at West Clinic this morning at 8:30 am. She didn't know until she got there and they talked with Dr. Tauer that she could start today. One study the Dr. thought Lana might be eligible for is closed, so he said she could go ahead and start today or Monday. Lana picked today.

After doing labwork, paperwork, etc., Lana was given anti-nausea and other meds, then started the carboplatinum/taxol chemo at 2:30 pm. She reacted to the taxol and had to stop the treatment. They gave her steriods, benedryl, and other meds for the reaction. The treatments were started again and she tolerated them the second time. She was finally finished around 7:30 pm and all went to eat catfish. Patrick came in for his Thanksgiving break while Lana was still at the clinic so he got to be with her during part of the treatment.

The clinic is about 30 minutes from home, so it's not a bad drive normally. The staff is terrific, the clinic is top-notch, and everyone is pleased with the facilities, the staff, and Dr. Tauer. Lana will go back in about 3 weeks for a catscan, and that catscan will be compared with the scan Dr. Carbone took to see if there is any change. Lana will have another chemo treatment in about 3 weeks, depending on her labs, counts, etc.

The family thanks all of you so much for your continued prayers, encouragement, kind words, messages on the guestbook, etc. Please continue to remember them as Lana goes through the effects of this first round of chemo. Industrial strength prayers are requested!!!!!

Blessings to all, Paula PPF

P.S. Four years ago today, Louis passed away.

It’s good news bad news time.
GOOD NEWS:
Dr. Carbone could not find any lesions big enough to use as a gauge of comparison.
BAD NEWS;
It they can’t find a lesion big enough then I am not eligible for any of his studies.
GOOD NEWS:
There are not any lesions as big as the one I had removed from my lung in the surgery.
BAD NEWS:
During the surgery the doctor took a sample of one of the smaller lesions he saw. Pathology report says it is cancer, just not big enough to show up on a CT scan…….anyone out there scared about what is in your body?

Dr. Carbone said one of my options was to wait until the lesion got big enough and then I could go into the research program. In doing that I take the chance of the cancer moving to other organs. I don’t want to take that chance.
GOOD NEWS:
Even though I’m not eligible for the Vanderbilt study my oncologist in Memphis (Dr. Tauer) has said I could come back here and start chemo. I have an appointment with Dr. Tauer on Friday morning and we will go from there.

This has been a rollercoaster ride for me and I am not fond of rollercoaster’s!!!! I am putting my trust in God and I know He will guide me through.
Thank you for your support and most of all your prayers. All of you are my strength. When I start getting down I go to this site and read the guestbook, It helps me more than you will ever know.

Tuesday, November 16, 2004 12:13 PM CST

I just got a call from Evelyn. Lana met with Dr. Carbone this morning at 8:00 am. He laid out all the experimental options. What studies she can and cannot qualify for depend on if she has a lesion large enough for Dr. C to work with. One set of options if she does have a lesion, another set of options if she does not. Dr. C was meeting with other doctors at noon today to present her case, but nothing can be decided until she has a CT scan. She is having the CT scan this afternoon at 3:00 pm. The hope would be that they would have some feedback today on the scan, but they are thinking it will probably be in the morning before anything definite can be known.

Interestingly, Dr. C has also had cancer of the lung, although his was lymphoma. He was able to be empathetic to Lana's continuing battle with pain. The doctor also said that Lana had quite a following, as evidenced by the emails he received! Her reputation preceded her!!!

Evelyn said to please continue your industrial strength prayers! Keep checking this website, as I will be updating when I have news from Lana.

Sunday, November 14, 2004 9:00 PM CST

Here it is Sunday night and we have finally decided to leave tomorrow afternoon for Nashville. It was decided that I would do better waking up at 7:00 am Tuesday in a hotel room next to the Vanderbilt campus instead of 4:00 am in Memphis. Is there really a 4 AM?

This is the trip where I will see Dr. Carbone, who is with the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. My prayer is Dr. C will have a research program waiting and ready for me to get into and I will start treatment ASAP. If not, Dr. Tauer at West Clinic in Memphis told me he would be waiting to hear from me and I could start immediately.

Thank you for your prayers during this crucial week. I will keep Paula updated on what treatment is available after the consultation in Nashville. I hope to start fighting these bad boys by the end of the week!

I have my boa and tiara ready to go!!!

My love to all of you...
Love,

Lana

I just couldn’t help it. It is supposed to rain tomorrow and the weather was sooooo beautiful. Curtis and I got out on our motorcycles Wednesday afternoon. I tried to make only right turns so I wouldn’t have to push too much with my right arm. We were only gone 20 minutes but it was so great!!!!!

WHAT A WEEKEND!!!!!

This part of my recovery has been so long and I am not known for my patience, remember, I am married to a FedEx pilot!!! I am feeling better, so I think I should be able to start the cancer treatment right now, but noooo, I have to wait until I have healed a little more from the surgery.

If you ever have any abdominal surgery, say lung surgery, DO NOT let Paula Parks Fulford and Paula Wolfe Hamrick (aka Mattie Grossman) know about it.

I had the best surprise ever!!! Saturday around noon these two walked in and we did not stop laughing until Monday morning when we took them to the airport.
We had so much fun. I got to meet Mattie Grossman (PP will provide pictures later).

We played beauty shop, went to a rugby game, yes, Precious came to town and played with the Memphis Blues. We all dressed up in our tiaras and boas and some of my "Go Girl" friends came over and we took pictures of all of our rings. This weekend went by so fast that I asked them to stay until I have to go to Vanderbilt, but they said something about work and families?

THANK YOU MY SWEET, WONDERFUL, THOUGHTFUL, CHOCOLATE PIE MAKING, GO GIRL GIRLFRIENDS. YOU ARE THE BEST.

Did you vote today......I did!!!!

I am truly blessed with having a wonderful husband who has been by my side, during most of this. He was playing golf the day I had the “big one” and I had to call our oldest son, Curtis, he was asleep upstairs. Yes, I called him on his phone!!!!
I don’t know why Curtis didn’t believe me when I told him he needed to take me to the hospital because my chest was hurting. It’s not like we tease each other around here.
Once Michael finished the 18th hole he rushed to the ER. OK, he forgot his phone or he would have been at the house to take me to the hospital!!! If you have read his message in the guestbook (Oct 28) you know I am so loved by this awesome man.
FedEx MD-11 Training Dept deserves a great big BRAVO ZULU for letting Michael hold my hand through all of this and they have told him they will work his schedule around my treatments too.

BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS everywhere you look.

I really over did it today, but I couldn't help it. Patrick had his last rugby game of the season, he is a freshman @ Arkansas State University, and I just could NOT miss is.

Mother found all the pillows in the house and we made the 90 minute drive to Jonesboro. When I arrived they had a truck backed up to the field and my throne, opps, I mean lawn chair, was put in the truck and I enjoyed a perfect view of the game. Of course we won, beat Vanderbilt, but I don't think I'll mention that part to Dr. Carbone.

After the first game the team asked me out on the field and they presented me with a Rugby Ball that they all signed. I received an ASU Rugby Shirt with PRECIOUS' MOM on the back. He is number 9 if anyone out there knows rugby. I call Patrick "Precious", guess that's what helps to make him such a GREAT rugby player.

I hope to get some pictures on here as soon as I can.

It was a very long day, and I was almost as sore on Sunday as the day after surgery, but I tell myself all that moving around is good for recovery.

When I arrived they had a truck backed up to the field and my throne, opps, I mean lawn chair, was put in the truck and I enjoyed a perfect view of the game. Of course we won, beat Vanderbilt, but I don't think I'll mention that part to Dr. Carbone.

After the A game the team asked me out on the field and they presented me with a Rugby Ball that they all signed.

Good news! Lana has an evaluation/consultation with Dr. Carbone at Vanderbilt in Nashville on November 16 around 3:00 pm. The family asks prayers for (1) all paperwork, test results, reports, etc., be gathered correctly, and be thorough and exact so that Dr. Carbone can make an informed, timely decision; (2) that Lana be accepted into the program that will best help her.

This is good news for the family, and they say to keep up the prayers!!!!! Thanks to everyone for your continued support.

I asked Lana last night whether she would prefer messages on the guestbook or by email. She said right now the guestbook would be better, that she would be more likely to see those than an email. I'll let you know when/if that changes. Of course, good ole' snail mail still works!

Here is a report on Lana's Wednesday (10/27/04) visit to the oncologist, Dr. Tauer. It was a long day, lots of paperwork and waiting, but the family felt encouraged when the appointment was over. Ev said that there was a feeling of hope when they left the clinic.

They felt God's hand in several areas. First, Dr. Tauer had been out of town for a week and a half. Only because Lana's internal med doctor, Dr. McCafferty, worked hard to get Lana in did Lana get to see Dr. Tauer on his first day back. He is head of the clinic where Lana may be receiving treatment, and Lana was a new patient, so for her to get in so quickly was a blessing. Also, the lung cancer IS the primary site. A small blessing, but you have to take what is given right now. At least they know what they are dealing with, and that they don't have to fight the cancer in two places.

Lana has received information from a friend about the possibility of being in a research study with a Dr. Carbone. She talked with Dr. Tauer about the study and he knew about it and spoke highly of it and Dr. Carbone. He said she is a good candidate for it and said "go for it". There are alot of variables about her getting in. IF she meets all the requirements, IF the insurance goes along, IF Lana can be where she needs to be for the study, etc. The study has been at Vanderbilt in Nashville, but Dr. Carbone is from New York, so there is some question about where Lana would have to be located to be included.

Dr. Tauer has given Lana a deadline of 4 weeks to begin treatment. If she cannot get into the study by then, she will begin treatment at the clinic. They took a tour of the clinic and were very impressed. They feel like they are in good hands with Dr. Tauer. They were also very impressed with Dr. Tauer. When Lana talked to him about the study, he was not defensive about her questioning other options, he was very supportive, he was knowledgeable and up-to-date on treatments for this kind of cancer, etc. All in all, for a bad situation, they feel like they could not ask for better care.

Specific prayer requests today are for (1) Lana to be admitted to the study, that all obstacles can be removed quickly so she can begin treatment very soon; (2) that Lana rest and heal so that she is ready for the next step in treatment.

Today Lana is doing something really important - getting a manicure! I'm sure she will also be polishing her tiara to receive guests as there has been such an outpouring of friendship and encouragement from her homies. Someone has kindly made a notebook for Lana so she can put in all the guestbook entries and the emails from the hospital and read them while she is gearing up for the next step in her journey. Thanks for your interest and prayers. Keep up the good work in Lana's honor.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. Psalm 137:7-11

Lana spent last night in the hospital. It was decided that since she had had two major procedures yesterday (the scope and the portacath surgery) she should stay one more night. Also, the nurses wanted a few more hours with the circus in Room 569 before Lana went home and everything on the wing went back to bor-ing. And the emails from the hospital website DID ARRIVE! The nurse brought in a big handful this morning. I guess Ev set the IT people straight!!!!

Lana called this morning about 11:45. She was in the car on her way home. A celebration of chicken livers is planned. Not my idea of gourmet, but the patient gets what she wants!!!!

Lana goes back to the surgeon next week for a checkup. She will be taking a combination of carboplatinum and toxol chemotherapies. Her oncologist is back in town tomorrow, so hopefullly she will find out very soon when the fun of chemo starts. How much she will have depends on how she tolerates the meds. They will begin with a high dose and hope she can tolerate it. Adjustments will be made from there. In a previous discussion with Ev, she said 4 months of chemo. We'll have a more definite answer after she gets started.

Lana says THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your blessings, prayers, encouragement, visits, and messages.

Now is not the time to stop sending encouragement to Lana. She will be home, people won't be around all the time, she'll be facing the reality of the chemo, etc. Please continue to leave messages in the guestbook. Set a reminder in your Outlook Calendar or on your Palm Pilot. I will still be sending out update emails as Lana or I post updates, but they won't be daily and life gets busy.

Peace to all. Hug your family tonight!!!!

Psalm 31:24
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

Lana has been in tests all day, so I am just now getting an update to you. The scope tests on her esophagus and stomach were done, and they both appear to be clean. As I write, Lana is in surgery having a portacath inserted on the right side under the collarbone. They are still waiting on Dr. Tauer to decide when she begins treatment. He is out of town until Wednesday.

Yesterday Lana had 3 tubes removed from her lungs and the epidural drip removed. Ev says Lana will be going straight to drug rehab since she has been on the drip since the surgery and misses it! She also has been on morphine. She will continue to be on a pain killer for a while.

Lana MAY get to go home today. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for her. The meds have been hard on her system....

I faxed more pages of the guestbook to Lana just now. They will be waiting for her when she gets out of surgery. Again, thanks to everyone for taking the time to write Lana. For some reason, the emails from the hospital website are not being delivered to Lana, and Ev was going to check on that as soon as we hung up. Maybe we overwhelmed the system and caused it to crash!!!!

If you sent an email to the hospital address, it has not gotten to Lana yet. So sign the guestbook and let her know you are thinking of her. Seems like the website isn't working as it should. Ev is getting IT to look into it.

Peace to all.

It's the weekend so things are a little slow at the hospital....except in Lana's room. I've had my daily update from Ev and Lana, and it sounds like business as usual in room 569. Lana is receiving guests in her tiara, fuchsia feather boa and scepter, which she has been trying to use as a magic wand to make Evelyn disappear. As of yet, she is having no luck.

Lana's fever is down and she is continuing to have an antibiotic drip to keep it that way. The results from the barium test came back and all was good with that. Monday they are still planning on doing the scope to look at her esophagus and stomach. She has been on an epidural drip for pain since the surgery, and they are planning on taking that out tomorrow. She will then go on to other good drugs for pain control.

The family is happy with the care Lana is receiving at Saint Francis. The oncologist who originally took Lana's history will not be her primary oncologist. His name is Dr. Johnson, and apparently, Lana lied to him during the history-taking session. She listed "Domestic Goddess" as her occupation. He was kind enough to call Lana and check in on her, even though she will not be his patient. Her primary doctor will be Curt Tauer, and he is at West Cancer Clinic. The clinic is not too far from Lana'a house and that is a blessing that they won't have to be schlepping all over town while she is feeling less than stellar. The nurses have all been great at the hospital, and Lana says they have been so impressed by the guestbook messages being faxed to her. They had never heard of this website and think it is great.

Still hoping for Lana to be able to come home Monday. I probably won't do a Sunday update since there shouldn't be much change in her condition or circumstances. Keep those cards and letters coming folks. Lana, Mike, the boys and Ev say they mean more than you can ever know. I will be reporting again on Monday.

Peace to all.

I spoke to Lana this morning. She'd had drugs, so she was laughing alot!!! I faxed her the guestbook entries yesterday afternoon, so she knows how much support she has. She was so touched that you would take the time to sign her guestbook.

She is having more tests today. She is taking barium so they can look at her jaw, chewing, swallowing, etc. On Monday she will have a scope to check out her stomach. They are trying to decide if the lung cancer is a primary or secondary site. In the meantime, she is running some fever and they have an antibiotic drip on her.

She was able to get out of bed and sit in a chair yesterday. Evelyn said she never thought she would hear Lana say she was glad to be OUT of bed!!! Lana is hoping to go home Monday, as are the nurses and orderlies. Just kidding! You know she makes a great patient and is never any trouble......

Thanks to all. If you are so inclined, please make a little donation to this website. It does such a great service in keeping all of us connected throughout the US. It really is a small world when we are bonded through friendship.

I just talked with Evelyn. The news is serious. They talked to the surgeon this morning. The cancer is in all three lobes of the right lung. It is inoperable. Chemo will begin after Lana heals from the surgery, possibly in a couple of weeks. They didn't take the lymph nodes because when they got in and saw it was more than the one original spot, there was no need.

Lana is awake and joking. She will be having more tests today. The biopsy from yesterday's surgery should be back tomorrow, but they expect nothing new from those results. I am printing off all the entries in the guestbook and faxing them to Lana today, so please leave her a note of encouragement.

Evelyn says they need industrial strength prayers!!

First, a little Lana humor. I hear that as she was wheeled into the OR, she had a plate of cookies under the sheet. Not for a little snack for herself, but a gift for the anesthesiologist to make sure he took good care of her! Doesn't that sound just like Lana?!?!?!?

I don't have alot of detail yet, but here is the report from Evelyn (Wednesday about 5:45 pm). When they got in to remove the lobe, there was more than the one spot they had seen on the PET scan. Ev called them "minute spots" but because there was more than just the one tumor, they did not remove the lobe. Instead, they took a wedge from the lobe and that will be biopsied (hopefully to be back by Friday). They did not take any lymph nodes. Why they did not take the lymph nodes is not known at this time. I think when Ev called they had not been out too long, so maybe they hadn't had a chance to really talk to the doctor yet. She thinks it is more than Stage 1 but more is not known on that yet.

So that's what is known at this time. I will be talking to Evelyn today and hope to update this journal. In the meantime, leave your messages on the guestbook and I will be working with Evelyn to get those to Lana in the hospital. Peace to all.

Lana called about 9:45 am. They were in the car on the way to the hospital. She sounded in good spirits. The surgery is scheduled for around 12:30 pm. She was hoping for a tummy tuck or uplift while she was in the OR, but the doctor thought taking the lung was enough for one day. She sends her love to everyone.

As soon as Evelyn gives Paula a call she will put it on the website.

Once upon a time ........
It started with some chest pains, I have found out since it could have been weight loss, but NO, I HAVE TO HAVE THE CHEST PAIN!!!!!
So, I go to the ER thinking I am having a heart attack. They do ALL sorts of tests and find a "spot" on my lung.
My heart is fine, but now we move on to the spot.

blah,blah,blah,blah.......
adenocarcinoma, the "most common" type of cancer in non-smoking women. No, I do not smoke!!!!!

It is in the middle lobe (did you know there are 3 lobes in the right lung and 2 in the left?)

Dr. Robbins will be taking out the middle lobe and lots of lymph nodes.

That's about it, in a nutshell.

If you are reading this, it means I love you so much and I thank you for your prayers.
