Last night, I spotted a ladybug on the shape of my lamp, here on my computer table. Of course, I thought of your lovebug, Connor. May God bless you both.
I hope you are thinking about a good Thanksgiving. Perhaps you can attend a community service, as we plan to do.
On Monday the church honored Margaret of Scotland, who was the queen in the children's hymn I often quote, "I Sing a Song of the Saints of God." Today, we honor Elizabeth of Hungary. Both used their high place in life to serve those in need, honoring Christ in their generations. I will leave their collects below.

During a famine and epidemic in 1226, while her husband was away in Italy, she sold her jewels and established a hospital where she nursed the sick, and opened the royal granaries to feed the hungry. The brother of one of Andrew's close friends, was hurt in an autombile accident over the weekend and is being treated at St. Elizabeth Hosptial, Utica, NY.

Dear Rhonda,
Today's Upper Room, called "Dancing Feet," is a meditation, written by a mother, who lost her child to leukemia. I certainly thought of you, and of Connor, as I read.
The mother, Patricia Hammell Kashtock, ended her short meditation, with this paragraph.
"Now, her new, strong feet move gracefully in the warmth of God's presence. In heaven, my daughter dances with joy again, without fear or pain, in light that will never fade. She is with God who is love and who will not let her go. Her joy will never end."
As you think of Connor this day, may you have grace to know that Connor is alive in God's eternal kingdom, where there is no suffering or pain. Connor's joy is full, and it will not end. Someday, you will enter into that joy, and all shall be well.

Dear Rhonda,
In reading of today's saint, Hugh of Lincoln, it occurs to me that he and Connor were very much alike in loving animals. James Kiefer wrote of Hugh:
He was fond of animals, and they of him. Birds and squirrels came readily to his hand. He had a swan that would feed from his hand, follow him about, and keep guard over his bed, so that no one could approach it without being attacked.
Perhaps Connor and blessed Hugh are enjoying a day in heaven today.

In reading about today's saint, Albert the Great, I learned that Albert was so curious about eagles that he had himself lowered down a cliff and into an eagle's nest. As I read that, I thought, "Now there is something Connor would do."

I thought of Connor this morning. I have probably shared this with you Rhonda, but praying for that little angel and his family literally changed my life forever. Sydney and I are praying for you on this special rememberance weekend. We also had a ladybug encounter today as we walked out of the movie theater. Sydney had on her ladybug earrings. We were walking out of the theater and she found two lady bugs on the floor by the door. We rescued them and delivered them to a nearby shrub when we noticed at least a half dozen of them flying all around us. I thought of you and Connor. We are blessed to know you and of your precious son. We are grateful for your friendship.

I saw two lady bugs yesterday...one was on the car door handle when I went to open it up to take my mom to the dr. to have her hip checked....I said "oh look mom it's a lady bug and today is Connor's birthday" I smiled and said "that just made my day!" Then the other was crawling on our end table when I sat down between trick or treaters....again a smile. I know he is here in spirit and I love the way he appears to let me know:)

Dear Rhonda,
We are having hard rain, here, in southern Saratoga County. As the temperatures drop tonight, we are expecting a nasty, heavy, wet snow. This is not good, as most of the trees around here still had almost full foliage last night, so with a heavy snow and lots of leaves, limbs, and even whole trees, could come down causing power outages. We are expecting 2-4 inches here, and that is enough to cause that type of occurrence, but areas in the Tug Hill and in the Adirondacks probably will get up to a foot.
I hope you are well, safe, and content. I am thinking of you, and of all those whose lives are closely linked with you and with Connor. May God bless you all.

Lisa Lowrey, Kambryn's mom, and I have set up a Vanderbilt Children's Hemonc Forum for our families, past and present, to get together and chat. Our hope is that we can have a place for families going through active treatment to get to know each other... families whose kids are done with treatment can talk about what's next and families with angels to connect for friendship and support. We also hope to start raising awareness for Childhood Cancer here in Middle Tennessee as well as help the families going through active treatment. Basically this is one solid place to connect and hopefully help find a cure for this horrible cancer that has drawn our families together. Check it out and let us know what you think. Schereschewsky, a European Jew, accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and trained for the Episcopal priesthood. After ordination, he spent 41 years in China, and was consecrated bishop of Shanghai. After being paralyzed, he gave up his bishopric and spent over twenty years, in a chair, typing Biblical translations with his one remaining useful finger. May we, with like confidence, have faith that God will use our talents, despite our infirmities and shortcomings.

Happy Columbus Day To All!

When my boys were little, I always planned an outdoor outing for the Columbus Day holiday. One year, we hiked the Saratoga Battlefield and ate a picnic lunch on the trail. Another year, we visited Stone Bridge and Caves, where we hiked the trail twice, visited the gift and gem shops, and ate a picnic lunch. Another trip was to Fort William Henry, and a fourth trip was to Fort Ticonderoga. As the guys got older, they had school sports commitments on Columbus Day, so the family outings stopped. Those outings are good things to remember, with fondness, as are your fall holiday memories of Connor. May your memories bring you joy today and every day.

One of my neighbors has a gokart and will occasionally get it out for a ride. He's about 14 now and gokarts aren't quite as important as when he was younger, so I don't get to see it running too often. Last night, we attended a gala storytelling banquet. In reflecting on an amazing evening, I think Connor would have enjoyed the humorous tellings offered by women from Saratoga Springs and from Albany and the dessert. I know I did.

Hey to everyone who visits Connor's web site and signs his guestbook!
Life happens. People get involved in their hectic schedules. Without meaning to, we often get 'lost' in our daily routines and may forget those who are important to us.
Maybe you feel as I do when you think often about a special person like Connor. Hardly a day goes by that this young man doesn't enter my thought process. However, I fail to take the time to come here and say a few words. It's so easy to let the hustle and bustle take over and we forget that some may need the blessing of a few minutes of our time.
God's plans for us are quite easy to understand and yet can be difficult to follow. I think that is why he uses the innocence of a young child to reach out and gently let us know there are things more important than our full and busy schedule.
I cannot visit here without thanking Connor for his incredible gift of being a mighty soldier in God's army! Although his physical walk is finished, he will continue to be a strong influence in many lives. I think about the scripture that states unless we become like little children, we cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven. God knows what he is doing.

Aiden of Lindisfarne is one of my favorite saints, so I am leaving his collect below. His day is usually August 31, but with that date being a Sunday, he was remembered today.
I have thought of Connor many times today, and another of his friends emailed me to say that she had, as well. Connor will not be forgotten by those who signed his guest book faithfully during his illness, but even more importantly, Connor is always in the heart and mind of God.

The news and the history of this week have made me think a lot of a young man, who like our Lord Jesus, gave his life for others. Today I leave you the collect for Jonathan Daniels, who died on August 20, 1965. A seminarian, his action in stepping in front of another, to prevent her death, still speaks louder than any words he could have preached.

Today's saint is Bartholomew. One of my connections with this name is that when they were young, my boys gave me a white teddy bear that I named Thomas Bartholomew. Over the past few days, three friends have died, and I have three friends battling breast cancer. Life is often uncertain, but all of these departed had faith, as did Connor, so are hearts, although hurting, are not like those without hope. We will see them again.
Today's saint is Helena, mother of Constantine, and finder of the True Cross. Several years ago, while in the Holy Land, I attended two worship services in the church she helped to build.
