Maddie,
Hope you heal quickly and my friends in PICU take great care of you like I know they will and can. It was nice to see the pic of you on this site, since I haven't seen you for a while. You look just as beautiful as I remember. Don't forget to ask your nurse to paint your nails for you when you wake up.

Hey Madigan! I know you probably won't remember me but all I want to tell you is you are such an amazing girl! I remember being really young and your mom took care of my mom when my dad was going through some tough times at the hospital. By the way, did you know your mom rocks? :) ...of course you do! :) Thank you, Pat...for all you've done for my family. You are such an amazing woman and words could never express my gratitude towards you for the way you treated my mother and took my family in when we spent our time at the U. You are wonderful beyond belief.

Wow Maddie ... You're 14 years old now! Hope they surprised you with a great birthday party last Wednesday.

I went on a ski trip that day with my fiancee and some friends, but there was so much snow in the Lake Tahoe area that the roads were closed and our bus had to turn around and take us home. So instead of skiing, we all spent 10 hours on a bus to nowhere! I would have much rather been in Minnesota celebrating your birthday with you!

Maddie-We did get our first snowfall 6 days after I last emailed you, but only 3 inches. Then on the 27th we got 10 more inches however THAT snow came with practically gale force winds so we couldn't really tell how much snow we got. THere were some snow drifts in the driveway and then part of the driveway was practically bare. Our next snow storm is slated for this Wed they say we are supposed to get 5-10 inches-Well I will believe it when I see it.
Hope your Xmas was wonderful. Did Wyatt and Cici visit? My sister and brother visited and got in and out of Maine before the snow hit.
Hope this year brings new progress for you physically.
We send our best wishes for a fantastic and exciting new year.
Love and always lots of hugs

What a cool way to celebrate birthdays by staying in a hotel. Ah ha Pat-your DVD is a fantastic idea-once you get it out there to all the medical professionals the $$ will come rolling in and before you know it you and Maddie will be traveling the country making appearances. Mikaylah will most likely be your assistant manager! Good luck with that.
No snow in Maine yet we can't believe it. However, our first snow storm is slated to begin this Sunday afternoon and go into Monday which probably means no school.
If there is a snowstorm Maddie I hope the homeschool teacher gives YOU the day off too.
Sending lots of love your way

Hi Maddie
You must be glad that school will be out soon. I know Conner and Kimberlee will be. Your mom is so ambitious to put on another yard sale! Happy Spring and soon to be summer. Is the beach water cold where you are? You know it is in Maine. We have not yet put our feet in the water, but hopefully will when it reaches upper temps again like we had last week which was in the 90's very unseasonable for May.
Take care of yourself

Good Evening Twinkle Toes!!

Well the puppy surprise for Christmas was indeed a big hit! Santa left a new stocking filled with puppy stuff. Remember we have a bunny (Batman) and so when Sarah looked in the stocking and saw only puppy stuff and not bunny stuff she was a little confused. Then she said, "Wait a minute, this is dog stuff not bunny stuff.... Oh my gosh, are we getting a dog?" And so that was the start of the puppy adventure. We picked him up on Dec. 30th. He was 6wks old, just a baby. He cried for some of the way home and when I looked in the back seat, everybody was crying with the dog!!They thought he missed his momma and so we should take him back. We didn't, we snuggled him and snuggled some more. He slept, as I predicted, on Mike's chest the first night and the second and the third. I could not bare to hear him cry in his kennel. So..... he slept with Mike and I for at least a week. It's amazing how much room a tiny puppy can take in a king sized bed. I am happy to report that he is now sleeping in his kennel which is in the kitchen. He now only cries for 10 mins. or so. He does however still get up at 1 or 2 or 3 AM!!!!!! to go outside which then he doesn't go potty but does want to play. Yikes! This baby thing was so much easier when I was in my 20's and 30's but not so easy in my 40's. Wow! We named him Tiger because he has a white T on his chest and he pounces on his toys like a tiger. Johnny taught him how to go up stairs and Megan taught him how to go down. So now we spend our days and nights chasing the little guy around the house. Let's talk teeth. Man are his little teeth sharp! This morning when I was up with him at 5:30, I gave him some fresh water, he thought it was his food and jumped up and spilled the water all over his head. He looked at me like, "Wow, what just happened Mom?" After he eats he has this little plump tummy. Chubby little guy. He loves to eat snow!! He also likes to poop in the middle of the driveway. That's going to need to change. He has learned how to play tug-a-war, especially with socks. My kids constantly take off their socks and leave them all over the house so now with Tiger chewing everything in sight the Senden kids are going to be wearing socks with LOTS of holes. That will teach them TO PUT YOUR SOCKS WHERE THEY BELONG!! Monday I introduced Tiger to ice cubes. Wow! You can have alot of fun with ice cubes. He chases it around the kitchen and then prances all around the house like he has something very valuable. Cutest darn thing.Well I'm off to watch Johnny play goalie in practice tonight. He's pretty excited! He's asked if I'm coming to watch him about 100 times! He wants me to bring Tiger to watch him too. Can you imagine Tiger running around the bleechers and me chasing him? Now that's one way for me to get my exercise! I think I'll leave him home and just relax in the bleechers. Well Darling, you take care and stay out of trouble. When you get home I'll bring Tiger over to your house and introduce you to him. Alvin might like a play date. Except Tiger is so small and Alvin is so big that Tiger might think he's playing with a horse. Oh well, it would be good for him to burn off some energy. Heavens knows he has ALOT!

Take Care!!

Love Ya Tons!

Hi Maddie,

Glad to hear you made it past another speedbump. Wow, these obstacles sure are a pain, aren't they? Really slow you down. The good news is that you're a very strong girl so you're able to handle these obstacles. Gotta get your own body in natural healing mode so that you can become even stronger. I'm living in San Francisco now, and thinking about you a lot. Stay warm, stay strong! Better days are coming!!

Pat, I haven't been able to stay online long enough to post, but I am PRAYING for our adorable Miss Maddie to be well and home for Wyatt and CeCe ... and we know that He is able, willing, and awesome to do this for us!

I pre-ordered Saraah's book even though she came to Grand Rapids (40 minutes from here!) for her first book signing, because I can't stand in line that long! So, you are very blessed to have a friend do that for you! It's a remarkable book and so inspired me! My husband says that Sarah and I are alike ... so if you're wondering what I'm like at home ... :)

Loving you, and praying with great anticipation for Twinkle Toes! Lady Girl, quit SCARING us! Seriously ...

HELLO TWINKLE TOES!
I hear you are causing trouble? No, not my Maddie! My dad brought me his church bulletin because there was an article about you. I loved reading it! Today was a snow day from school! I played all day and made some homemade vegetable soup. It made my house smell so good. I'm sure you remember my stories about my terrible cooking. So if you're wondering, no I did not burn anything and no the fire alarm did not go off. I really don't have to ever "test" my fire alarms, my cooking does the trick! Speaking of food, I've started a diet and let me just say that this is really for the birds! If oreo double stuff cookies and a tall glass of milk were part of a diet i would have started one long ago. Gaining weight does allow a person to buy new clothes, but that excuse can't go on forever. My Christmas shopping is started but certainly not finished. I went out on black Friday to Walmart and WOW! I've really never seen anything quite like it before. I was quite an experience. Wall to wall frantic people. I think I might stick to the other stores next year. I went there for a special CD for Megan and come to find out it came out on Saturday. (It said that in the fine print!)

Here's my question~ Can you keep a secret? I'm going with yes so here's the scoop.

We're getting a puppy for Christmas! He won't be 6 weeks until the 30th so we are going to drive to get him over vacation.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! It's a secret. My kids don't know a thing about it. He is a lab-border collie mix. He just opened his eyes a week or so ago. Mrs. Lidke (gr 2 teacher) found him for us. So............... sleepless nights, potty accidents, picking up poop and lots of juicy kisses here we come. I think I'm going to leave it up to my kids to name it. Should be interesting on what they come up with! I'll keep you posted.

Have you made your Christmas list yet? We are into the teens on days before the big day. I've heard that you have been good so for heaven sakes, go all out on the list. Tell your mom that the paper you'll need is a register roll. That outta be big enough.

I'm not sure if I told you that my Megan's favorite color is purple. So of course it reminds me of you! Purple, Purple and more Purple. Are you a Viking fan? You sure have enough purple to be one. You know Mr. Gallagher (the Packer fan) is recovering from Farve coming to Viking land. He actually took it quite well. I was a little worried. Mr. Shermock has stopped by school lots of times. He grew so many pumpkins that he brought alot of them to school.Lots of squash too. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. I made it with brown sugar, butter and for diet sake I covered that with marshmellows Mmmmmmmmmmmm good stuff. I wonder if all of the toppings took away all of the nutrition., Oh well, too late now. I'm wondering if there is a space limit on this thing for each entry? I hope not! You know whenever I get the chance to catch up with you, it can't happen in a quick line or two.
I remember the last time I visited you in the hospital in the winter and I brought you some snow! Remember those cut out snowflakes that we hung from your ceiling? I'm not sure the nurses liked it but by now they should know that our Miss Maddie doesn't always play by the rules. You go girl! I'm with ya!

Well Sugar Plum, it's time for me to hit the hay. The odds that we'll get two snow days in a row are slim to none. You know yesterday I wore my snowflake pin for good luck, everyone laughed and thought I was nuts, but, it seems to have worked! A little good luck never hurts!

I love ya darling! Kisses and Hugs!

Julie Senden

PS. Remember to keep the puppy thing under your hat. It's a secret!

I am glad that you are feeling better. Are you getting excited about Christmas? I am going to decorate my house and tree this week-end. It is a job but it is so nice when it is all done. It is starting to get cold at recess. Yes, now that I don't work with you I have to do recess duty-thanks! You know me and the cold don't go well together. We got a kitten for Easter and I love him to death. His name is Ollie and he follows me everywhere. He is wonderful to have around here. Well sweetie I am going to close this for now. Pat, we have been in and out of FUMC ourselves with our daughter Amelia. She was diagnosed at first with ADEM (acute leukodystrophy post-encephalomyelitis) but now a whole host of diagnoses are on the table - including MLD. Our fervent prayers are that this would be some kind of horrible nightmare and that we would wake up eventually and go back to normal life. She is doing well for the moment on steroids. We were back to peds sedation for an MRI today, but out again until December 8th. We should get together and catch up over a coffee (I might even consider a stiff drink or a cigarette!!).

Hello Pat Mikaylah and Maddie from Maine
Cool weather is setting in all too soon for us having not much of a summer at all. It rained all of June.
Kimberlee like Mikaylah is in High School and taking all honors courses as well as an Art Foundations class which will hopefully stimulate more of her creativity. She has been drawing mainly Anime type characters on her computer. We are still looking into a website for her. Mikaylah I hope you are still drawing as well. We have your picture along with Maddie's on our bulletin board.

Oh Maddie my dear little ....oh not so little any more. You are such a fighter and also a beautiful girl inside and outside. You touch so many people with your strength. I wish those tremors would vanish and pray they do. You have such a loving and supportive family with friends that surround you. I hope you can gain inner strength from them.

Pat you have an infinite amount of energy and I am proud to have you as a friend. You keep going girl. I only wish I could do more.
So glad and happy to hear of all the events you attended this summer.
Conner is in 6th grade and slowing getting used to the change of classes.
Take care We love you all-Ann, Kimberlee and Conner

Hey Maddie,
I know you don't know me yet but I know that when you come to school we will be best friends. Im am very excited to meet you. I help adaptive people dance every Saturday. If there is every a time you need something I can help. I am in your 6th hour class. My neighbor uses a computer and I have become one of her best friends. I think it is just so mean how people treat people with disabilities. I also worked with an Autistic boy in elementary school. I look forward to meeting you on Friday and if there is anything you need know that I am there for you.

I was going to say what Trish did, but she beat me to it. So ditto to Trish!

I'm so sorry the thalidomide is causing tremors. I will pray that they dissipate. I've been doing a lot of research on inflammation and its role in cancer and infections. I've concluded that the best defense is curcumin, krill oil, and magnesium. I don't know if that is something you can do for Sweet Maddie, but I thought I'd mention it.

Loving you all!

Hi Maddie and Pat!
I'm not sure you'll remember me, but I met and spent time with you eight years ago now, I believe, when my dad was at the U of M for a few months. You guys were even kind enough to let my mom (Val) and I stay at your place so we wouldn't have to sleep in the cramped up hospital rooms. You guys are the best! Hope all is well, my mom and I would love to hear from you soon!

It was wonderful visiting with you the other night. I loved my ride on the Lang Rover. What a beautiful and serene area to explore. You looked great, but I'm sure we tired you out. Sampson enjoyed the bone that you gave him.
I hope to see you again this summer.

My darling Maddie, you break my heart with joy! You never give up and never give in, and you have the best advocate in the world with your mom! I know that those precious fingers will obey your commands soon, because He is able, He is willng, and I believe with all my heart that He has heard our prayers and is answering with YES and AMEN!

Thank You, Lord!

So Thalidomide is the Lord's answer for this problem, and we will rejoice as He uses it to bring glory to Himself so that others may know that He loves us all.

Again, thank You, Lord, for precious Maddigan!

It sounds like you had a lot of fun with mom and the water balloons. Peter got a new golden retriever puppy for his birthday. We named him Sampson and he is strong and full of mischief just like you! If it is okay with your mom we will bring him over for a visit. I hope the new drug helps and that the side efects are few.

Hang in there! Keep believing, as I do, that you can be healed! Oh, dear. I'm so sorry about all this, especially the neurofibroma. Thalidomide is given to patients with my cancer to stop it for a while, and it works for most. But like everything in MM, nothing works for good. Still, in Maddie's case, I could see its value. However, the side effects are not at all comfortable. And there is the problem of being around women of child-bearing age. You have to take clasees on how to handle it, etc.

Sorry if I sound down about this, but I will cetainly be praying for a much better solution for our adorable Miss Maddie!

Loving you!

I'm so sad I missed this update, but I suppose the timing is right for me to read it today! I have been back in the battle with the cancer since Feb and some days, the devil whispers stuff about MY quality of life. Then I think of what Adam and Eve must have been like - how wonderous were their abilities in every area, and how we would look sadly deficient compared to them. If we compare ourselves with others, or even ourselves before disease took some things away, we will only be discouaged. But if we see the beauty created inside us by being slightly different than "normal," we will have reached the face of God, touching His cheek, His tears running down with joy.

Thank you, dear Pat, for being a voice to those who struggle to speak, but are willing to struggle, just the same!

Loving you so much!

OH MY GOSH WHAT A BEAUTY YOU ARE MADIGAN. Your hair is so awesome! Happy Belated Birthday my friend from your friends in Kennebunk, Maine. No, we have not forgotten about you-please accept my apology for not writing sooner (my bad!)
Mikaylah you better watch out for those boys you are a beauty as well! Glad you all could spend Xmas together. Unfortunately, the incident at the Disney show you described Pat is NOT the typical American. I have more faith in people than that, but it really STINKS when that happens. Pat you are exceptionally strong-willed like Maddie. Am I surprised-no I am not. And Mikaylah I praise you for being such a wonderful, caring and supportive sister. I know you are helping out your mom and Maddie as much as you can. I was in tears when I looked at the pictures of the 3 of you, as I had not seen you for years. I was so amazed at how beautiful your girls are Pat. I am so sorry I have not written sooner (my bad, again!) I have been thinking about you and have your pictures on my frig. What can I say the years got away from me. Still a single Mom with Kimberlee turning 14 and Conner 12. Conner is a handful, Kimberlee is my artist. Does Mikaylah still paint, draw, sketch?
Maddie you are such an inspiration to all who know you-You GO girl! Love, Hugs, Kisses and Smiles, and lots of hope we are sending to you, Maddie and love to you Pat and Mikaylah-I miss you all-You are welcome back to Maine anytime. :)

Good Morning Twinkle Toes!
I'm so happy to hear that your toes are being well tended to. Nothing better than a little pampering! Well Miss Maddie, it is official, I am an old lady!!I turned the BIG 40 yesterday! My family decorated my classroom and kept it a surprise until I saw it the next morning. 40 signs everywhere and streamers, the works! So of course my class took it upon themselves to feel the need to party all day long.It was fun. Johnny told one of his teachers that I was turning 50! I'm going to have to have a long talk with that boy. See how important math is Maddie? No more sleeping during your math class girlfriend! I'm hoping Johnny knows the importance of knowing if your mother is turning 40 or 50! Big difference!! Good Gravy!! I'm keeping busy with hockey games lately. My buns have been cold since November. Now that the hockey season is almost over I can warm up. Too bad cold buns don't shrink in size. Could be a great weight loss plan for me. Hummmmmmmmmm. Johnny made two goals during his tournament and they were both in the correct goal. Thankfully.Megan has taken up soccer. She is quite concerned with her outfit for each game. Lip gloss the works, so we'll see how long this lasts. As you know we are on spring break this week, maybe we could all catch a movie? I'll have my event planner call your event planner and hook up. I read about your botox shots. Hummmmmmmm I hear those help with wrinkles? I am getting more of those by the day! Before too long I might look like that breed of dog with all of the wrinkles. Oh dear. Well Twinkle Toes, let's get together soon. I sure do miss you. I still have that picture up of you and me racing Mr. Gallagher on track and field day up in my room. It's one of my favorites! You of course are looking your best in some stylin shades as I race down the track to beat the socks off the competition. What team work! Talk to you soon darling!! Stay warm and grease up those tires for some racing in the spring!

Love,
