Saturday, November 8, 2008 7:24 AM CST WOW!! Where did the year go? I can't believe it has been a year since I posted anything!! Actually that is good because it means that all has been relatively quiet in the White house.
November 7th of course marks 8 years since Jack was diagnosed. Eight years ago that we traveled to Memphis for the first time. I will never forget that trip. How terrified we were, but what an amazing blessing. Jack is doing very well. He is in the 5th grade and is doing very well. We just finished (thank God) another football season. It is amazing enough that Jack is with us today, but also that he does not suffer from some of the residual side effects that so many childhood cancer survivors have to endure. Other than his hearing loss, we don't see anything else. So many kids have on going health problems or cognitive learning issues. Jack is doing wonderfully in school and is such a blessing to us.
As for the rest of us, Gus is doing great as well. He is now in the 7th grade and taller than me. He continues to excel in school. His arm healed amazingly well and he was even able to pitch some this baseball season. He also just finished football season and is now playing basketball for his school team. He remains in the top of his class at school and his personality has really matured. He is so fun these days!
Mike and I were recently asked to serve on the Parent Advisory Council at St. Jude where we were named co-chairs. We are both very excited about this opportunity to give back to the hospital which has given us so much. I recently went to a training conference on Patient and Family Centered Care with some other members of the committee to Calgary, Canada. We hope to make what is already a wonderful place, an even better place for the patients and their families. I will serve as the co-chair for the St. Jude Dream Home again this year. The house will be built in Ooltewah by Pratt Builders. We are so thankful for them and look forward to this being a very successful Dream Home.
Next week we are going to Memphis for Jack's scans. This will be both a very wonderful and hard visit. If all is well, and I am positive it will be, it will be our last visit in "D Clinic" with our team, Dr. Furman and Sandy, our nurse practioner. While this is the day you dream about it is very hard to transition to a new team, away from one that has been with us from the beginning and we have shared so much with. Thank you, Dr. Furman and Sandy. We love you, and even though you won't be seeing us in clinic, we will always come back to visit. Our next team will be in the "ACT Clinic" which stands for After Completion Therapy. We look forward to meeting them and to our relationship for many, many more years!
We want to thank you, those have prayed for us over these past 8 years for all the love and support you have shown us. Please continue to pray for those families who continue this fight. There are so many. Especially close to us are Sam Farris (www.caringbridge.org/samfarris), Evan Thomason(www.caringbridge.org/evanthomason), and Quincy Russell(www.caringbridge.org/quincyrussell). I have known each of these boys since close to the beginning of their fight and they are very special to us.
May God Bless each of you and your family. Beth
