Hi. I live in NY and our son Brion (10) was born with Vater syndrome. Your daughter is beautiful. She looks so happy. My son always ask why he doesn't see anyone like him and why he's different. I told him there were other kids with the same hand and he saw the picture and was surprised.It made him feel a little better. They have similar stories and he is on Prevacid as well. It's good to know we aren't alone.

Our son Max was born in 2004, and diagnosed in utero as VACTERL. He has one kidney, floating Left thumb, absent ulna in Right forearm, missing two right fingers, club hand, VSD, Imperferate anus (has been corrected). We look forward to hearing about Alisons progress! Best wishes.

Oh my goodness ! Wow ! What a horrible experience . Sounds like one of our hospital stays . I'll tell ya PA is just not very stellar when it comes to medical care for our VACTERL girls . Thanks for sharing Allison's ups and downs in life. My daughters name is Cassidy DOB 5/25/04 close to your daughters age and we have been there too. I think the staff at Phoenix Children's Hospital know us quite well. Cassidy will be undergoing pollicization in two weeks then VEPTR for her back. I still get nervous everytime we go to the hospital. I'm like you I question everything and double check with numerous doctors. My Husband said he doesnt have to worry because I do enough for both of us. I love you daughters spirit. My daughter is the same way, I have truly been blessed with an angel.

My daughter Ainslee was born August 13, 2004 with VACTERLS syndrome. She actually had all the other "letters" (anomalies) that your little Allie didn't have. We are having such a hard time potty training, partially due to her Imperforate Anus and partially being spoiled (we don't know how that happened) :) and too busy playing to pay attention to clues. I once had a caring bridge page for her, but have not updated in ages. Anyway, I thought I would leave a message since they seem to be about the same age. Feel free to e-mail me anytime!

Allie, you're a precious little girl! I am the grandmother of another precious little girl, Marley Kate who was born on October 29th of this year. She also was born with Vaters....we are still learning about her challenges at this time. Within 3 hours of her birth, she stopped breathing and was rushed to the NICU. We knew that she had been born with 2 extra toes, but had no idea at first that there was anything else wrong. After being in the NICU for 2 days they attempted to give her pedialyte and it went straight to her lungs. At that point we were sent by jet to another hospital with a Level 1 NICU. She underwent surgery two days later. She had a TEF. She was also diagnosed with a small VSD, they even think this might close on it's own. Just yesterday, we were told that she possibly has a tethered spinal cord. We are awaiting results of yet another MRI, (the first was deemed borderline?) We are all so confused right now, it seems as if everyday is bringing on yet another challenge. Thank you for sharing your story!

Hello there Miss Allison . So glad to hear everything is going so well with preschool . My 3rd daughter Hannah loves her preschool too . The funny part is she is the ONLY girl out of 11 kids in her class . She doesn't care though . Your story reminds me of when my 2nd daughter Katie went to preschool and she used to talk about Sam and Barry . Who Sam and Barry was I don't think I'll ever know :>) LOL ! Because there wasn't a Sam and Barry in her class . LOL! So glad to hear your thumb is working well . Maggie had her surgery postponed. We are trying to get her tethered cord surgery done first . We just found out she has this in July so her "thumb" surgery was cancelled and both her daddy and I are trying to figure it out if we want it done now because she has acclimated herself to not having her thumb .
It looks like you had a TON of fun at the fair . Fair time is always a big thing around our area too . Hope everything stays well for you and Big Hugs to you and your family .

I found your link through the VATER Association webpages and found the beautiful picture of your little girl. My daughter (10 mos tomorrow) does not have VATER, but was born with some challenges, most significant, radial aplasia with clubbed hand. I can't tell you how good it made me feel just to see a picture of another little girl who looks like Maggie. Not that I want anyone to deal with this, but it just makes you feel not so alone. . . that there are others who have learned to live with this. Maggie's is her right hand, and unfortunately she can only use her pinky finger, as her first two digits have syndactyly which cannot be separated (or used to make a thumb). Maggie does wonderfully with what she can, but I'm still searching for others out there who can offer advice, support and stories.

Hello, I just happened upon your web site and wanted to say hi. I have a 20-year-old with VATER, her arm is very similar to your daughters. She also had cleft lip/palate and numerous heart defects. She is doing great, believe me it gets easier. She has had a great life, good friends, a job at the mall, and just celebrated her 5 month anniversary with her boyfriend. It is hard . I think sometimes harder on us moms then on them :>) I wouldn't worry about her report . I bet she was alot better then the rest of the kids there. Plus alot of them are probably familiar with a more structured enviroment because most of them are probably daycare kids . She looked so pretty with her dress and Dora lunch box. My Hannah ( 3rd daughter ) just turned 4 . She loves preschool and she can't wait to start again . No worries about the phatom Erin. A few years ago my 2nd daughter would come home and tell me about Sam and Barry . There wasn't a Sam and Barry in her class . Maybe they were her pretend friends .

Dear Family,
I am a mother of a beautiful 21 month old daughter named Chloe. Chloe was diagnosed with Vaters Syndrome at my 20 week ultrasound. They told me her issues were so great that she would never even make it outside my womb. Well, I made it to 34 weeks and my Doc. performed an emergency C-section. A team of 15 Doctors performed an 8 hr. surgery on Chloe 1 hr after she was born. Later I found out that they lost her 3 times while on the operating table and had to resuscitate her. Amazingly she made it through that first surgery and 5 more in the next 3 months. Chloe spent 72 days in the NICU before coming home. So far she has had a total of 10 surgeries and number 11 will be on 2/9/07 in Portland. This surgery will be a kidney transplant. My husband and I are both very scared and excited all at the same time. If Chloe accepts this new kidney, the Doc says this will give Chloe a whole new outlook on life! I can't wait to finally be able to feed her a bottle or baby food! Life with Chloe has come with it's fair share of scary moments as well as SOOOOOO much joy to fill my days. Never for one moment have my husband or I regretted giving our all to help Chloe and give her a chance at life. Our strenth has come from our heavenly Father, Jesus Christ who has been there with us every moment of every day. I wanted to share my story in hopes that if there is someone out there that has just found out about their child with Vaters syndrome, DO NOT GIVE UP no matter what anyone says. That life that is growing inside of you is precious in the eyes of God and He will give you the strength to go through anything if you put your trust in Him.

This is a great site. I am a pre-k teacher of a vaters child. I have been with her since she was 3 yrs old. I am so glad there are pics to show her of children who look like she does. Her arms were much shorter than your daughters but last yr. they did surgery and lengthened the right one. She has just had surgery to make her a thumb on her right hand. She only has 4 digits on each hand and they are very weak but she writes, feeds herself and does everything possible. She will be 6 in January. She is my hero. I love her dearly. If the world was full of people with the spirit these kids have then it would be a beautiful place full of hope and love.

Our son was born w/ several Vaters symptoms. He had 9 surgeries his first year and is finally doing well. He had the malasia and was vent dependent for 9 months, then had the trach finally removed just before his first birthday. It was rough the first few months w/o the trach, but it gets better. My son was also born with vaters. He is missing the radious bone in both arms and has not thumbs and on his left hand three fingers, but two are fused together. He is 11 years old and having a very hard time dealing with other kids making fun of him. He is a very talented boy and can do everything a normal 11 year can, somethings better. I just wish a could find a way to help him deal with his hands. I feel his pain everyday and I can't help him understand how beautiful he is. I'm scared for my son, because he is not handling his hands the way they are. If other kids would just leave him alone, I think he would be ok. Thankyou for sharing your story with others. Allison is very beautiful! It has been almost 12 years since our daughter was born with vaters. I have been reading alot on the internet and it seems like technology has advanced alot since then. We were at Duke Medical Center and unfortunately her case was very complicated. We have two healthy children now, but I will never forget the time with her.
